  1. STUCK in long term care??? What a horrible thing to say. Im currently a CNA in a long term care facility... and im currently a LPN student (6 months to go woooo ) and when im done i am staying in my long term care facility... and when i go to the bridge program in jan.... and graduate as an RN i will STAY in my long term care facility. I LOVE LTC. its where my heart is, and forever will be. I do not think people should down others because of their likes. I did the hospital thing as an aide. I am forced to go there in clinicals. YES it is very interesting and informative but it is just not my style. WHO cares what others say, if you enjoy whatever you enjoy and you are happy... do whatever it is to achieve that... screw then RN BSN whatevers...hahaha;)
  2. I've never been in an RN program but my LPN program is not easy. I talk to recent LPN grads from other programs and people that have been LPNS for decades and they can not believe the requirements that I have for my course. My program is relatively new and my teacher is an RN BSN MASTERS WHATEVER haaaaa and its a lot like military school. We learn about skills that are not even in our scope of practice. In ways its not needed... but in ways its positive because if we ever do choose to go on we will have a good background. I think its hard to say. I think it depends on the program and the teacher...
  3. im fat. i weigh 198 lbs... and im 5ft 2... but i never ever ever felt discriminated against due to my weight... i think its about attitude and knowledge...personality... let your self shine for you.. not your weight... my teachers always take me seriously and i am relatively popular with my peers.. you need to forget about you weight...just be you.
  4. You dont like ATI??? I love it.. I think it is soooooooooooooooooo helpful. Didnt you get the books with it? READ them... Im in my pharmacology section right now in my LPN program and Ive found the ATI books EXTREMELY helpful....
  5. Nah... I wouldnt re take it... why go threw hell again ?! if you dont have to. If you are that worried about it and it hurting your chances of getting in talk to an advisor at your school and see what they think.
  6. Fact: I don't have a member . But I thought I could still have a little insite for the simple reason that I feel a lot like you do. In the clinical setting I am often dissappointed. I am instructed to do similar things.... Make beds, wash people, ambulate patients, give them the bed pan , so on and so on. YES i do understand that is part of the job... YES I understand it has to be done... But Ive been a CNA for 4 years.. Im pretty sure I've mastered those skills . It is even more frustrating because now I am entering my 3rd semester and the majority of our clinical time is STILL focused on those aspects... Im with you.. I would much rather be focusing on my patients medications and effects...lab values and why... wound care... EKG readings...and so on... So on my end Ive come to the realization this is just how school is.. I educate myself a LOT outside of class Im constantly doing research and figuring things out on my own. Many nurses I have talked to have told me that you learn most when you are on the job. So keep on truckin threw school...Get out there get some real experience and THEN figure out what you want to do to advance... Thats what I would do.
  7. I graduate from my LPN program in Dec. And I plan to stay one for a looooooong while... perhaps forever... I really do not want to go threw this full time school full time work thing anytime again soon so . Ha. Where I work as a CNA in a county nursing home, LPNS are seen as an equal to RNs with the exception of they can not work in administrative postions, but I have no desire to be a "big wig" I love patient care and being with my residents . My mom worked as an LPN for 5 years before going back for her RN. She told me her motivation was she was sick and tiered of doing exactly why an RN does but only at 3/4 of the pay. So maybe one day I will get to that point. When I get out of school I will only be 21 so I figure I have a while to figure it out. Getting threw any nursing school RN or LPN is a huge accomplishment... So if i stay an LPN forever so be it...
  8. Even in you work full time in that VA spot you could finish school and when you graduate work perdiem somewhere as an LPN for some extra cash. Nursing homes in my area pay per diem LPNS 27 an hour... obviously thats not bennefits included but if you have the full time job at the VA place you would be fine with that. If I were you thats what I would do. You never know what will happen with this VA job, and then you will always have your LPN to fall back on. Besides you made it this far... don't quit now...
  9. I've often thought the same thing. Listen to this one.... I have this pt. at clinical who has BPH with urine retention and they strait cath him q 8hr ..... Okay fine... BUT they RE USE the cath!!!! They wash it with warm soapy water....stick it in a bag and store it in the patient's dresser.... This seems a bit mid evil to me.. My instructer and I have confronted the facility multiple times on this issue, but they say it is their policy.... Im assuming its all related to budget... To prevent him from getting an infection they have him on Macrodantin 50mg daily. It seems to me it would be a lot easier for the patient and all if they would just use a sterile cath each time... But what do i know.. im "just" a student...ha

So Im new to this board... Hello All... Right now I am in my second semester of 4 to get my LPN.... WHAT A LIFE... I work full time as a CNA at a nursing home, and I got to class 3 nights a week from 430-930 and have clinical every other weekend... So my life.. yea I have none... I have been very sucessful so far in my program... We just started pharmacology... and I couldn't be MORE nervous... There are a million drugs and I cant even begin to imagine how to START to learn them. Any tips??? I have to take and pass a med test by March 31st to be able to pass meds at clinical.... Ive been studying out of my fundementals book all the basics... Ive been reading my drug book... making drug cards.. I even ordered some druge cards off line.... I just feel confused on what drugs to really know... What did u do to pass this test? or learn drugs... any insite is welcome!
