  1. "But I'm pregnant . . ."

I don't recall really ANY "pregnant bashing" on this thread. Rather, we are saying that it is unfair when the demands of pregnant women get out of hand, with no evidence to back it up. If a pregnant nurse came to me and needed help lifting, or exchan...
  2. "But I'm pregnant . . ."

I once saw a cord that had TWO knots - and baby was fine!
  3. Science in Nursing School

I agree. You have to try to not let it overwhelm you. I have found especially with a lot of memorization in classes like anatomy that writing my notes out neatly while I studied really helped me get the big picture.
  4. "But I'm pregnant . . ."

Is it really true that physical labor (no pun intended) can cause this? I have always believed it was an old wives tale...
  5. Science in Nursing School

Are you going to be taking them with other RN students? If so, chances are a lot of them aren't great at or love science necessarily - they want to be nurses. You can be in it together. Also, if you can, try to spread them out. Avoid taking several d...
  6. Instructors!!!!!!!

I would have grabbed the chart afterwards and asked her to point out exactly where it says she was "retarded." Whatever. That would probably make her even more angry and weird. I feel so thankful I had good clinical instructors. I have heard horror s...
  7. Grrrrrr...insulted by clinical instructor

I agree with going to another instuctor or higher authority. Your idea of going to your other instructor is a good one. If anything, she can make you feel better. Your experience sounds horrible, and I would react just as you did, maybe worse. There ...
  8. What's you favorite redneck patient story??

As a native San Franciscan going to nursing school in (rather) rural Virginia, I was a little bit culture shocked. Sure there were rednecks, people who were backwoods andnot as educated. The hospital I worked at was the only large public hospital for...
  9. "But I'm pregnant . . ."

For some reason I am not being allowed to edit my post, but I just wanted to say that some nurses said I SHOULDN'T pull up patients...
  10. "But I'm pregnant . . ."

That would make me so mad if someone who happened to be pregnant refused to do anything. I was working on a busy neuro floor when I was pregnant last year, and the only time I refused to do something was when I was assigned a few heavy spinal injurie...
  11. activities of daily living problem

Manyquestions - I really identify with you. ADL work can be physically and mentally grueling, and there are aspects of nursing that aren't as focused on it, but each one is going to have at least a little of it. LTC may not be for you, but there are ...
  12. Nurse to Couplet Ratio?????

As of Jan. 1, it is law! Along with set ratios for every other unit.
  13. Air in IV lines

I found this on the web by a Steven Harris, MD. And of course, it's on the web, so it must be true!: ////There is really no reason at all for a correctly performed intravenous injection to contain even a tiny air bubble. Nevertheless, a few cc's o...
  14. Hair style poll: Long or short?

I had long hair all through school, and would always have it up in a clip or ponytail. Soon after graduating I cut it to chin length. It is so much better!! It looks much neater and professional, and you dont need to spend the time with getting your ...
  15. Nurse to Couplet Ratio?????

In california, the max ratio is 4 couplets to one RN, any shift.
  16. So this is what everyone was talking about...

I was a PCA throughout nursing school. They were incredibly flexible and let me work whatever I wanted. They could use any help they could get. I heard about working as a PCA through a couple HR people who came to the school to recruit. They said tha...
  17. Nursing, is it really a profession

Coming across as a true professional is SO important as a nurse! Let's change some negative perceptions about nursing.
  18. Northern Calif Roll Call

I always hear such great things about El Camino. I went there the other day just to check it out and it is a beautiful campus. I think I want to get some mom/baby care exp. where I can get it (I don't have any yet) working per diem, then figure out w...
  19. flu shot frenzy

I have been giving flu shots at the mall on weekends through a private company and have a question - what are the rules as far as privacy goes? We have a sign-up sheet, and not until a patient pointed it out did I realize this may be in violation of ...
  20. Air in IV lines

I think it is pretty common to have a few air bubbles in the lines. Very difficult to make sure there is absolutely no air, and probably a big waste of time. I have heard that there would have to be a very large bubble (like the whole line) to cause ...
  21. accepting a job on mother/baby?

I am an RN with a little tiny bit of med/surg experience, and really interested in mom/baby work. For those of you who've been there, what do you look for in a place to work? I went to an interview recently, and the nurses seemed rather unfriendly, a...
  22. accepting a job on mother/baby?

This is the email I just received: /That is not something we do at this hospital. Again, if you have particular questions I would be more than happy to answer them./ I don't understand? Is this a standard rule at hospitals? I am REALLY put off.
  23. accepting a job on mother/baby?

I did email the manager about talking to another RN or 2 about the unit, to get a better feel for the place. She didn't seem to understand my question and told me she would be available for any more questions I may have. I don't want to beat a dead h...
  24. Northern Calif Roll Call

I'm in Silicon Valley, looking at working in a mom/baby unit at Good Sam in San Jose. Anyone have any opinions on this hospital?
