1. Question: We were just told that we have to now start putting IN & OUT timeswhen charting patient care nursing notes. We were told that it is aMedicare requirement. I'm not sure I am buying the Medicare requirement thing. I have searchthe internet & the medicare site looking for this requirement. I thinksomeone in the office is trying to make their life easier by making mine 10xmore difficult. Thoughts?? Thanks!!
2. I am a new employee in an ASC - Mohs Surgery (skin cancer). We draw up the lido w/epi, bicarb & clindamycin into 3ml syringes and date them for expiration 2 weeks from being drawn up. Then, they also date it for another week out if the 2 week date comes and the syringe has not been used. At another derm office I worked in, they were only "good" for 1 week. When I asked why they aren't just dated with a 3 week expiration, I got the standard "That's the way it's always been done". AUGHHH!!! Does any one know how long a medication can be in a syringe? Thanks!
3. Can you share those recipes??
4. I started with a good pair of tennis shoes (Nike), then bought a pair of Dansko's that you see everyone wearing http://www.dansko.com/At Work/Womens/Footwear/Collections/Stapled Clog/Professional/Antique Brown Oiled but they hurt my 2nd toe after about an hour. My best friend LOVES Dansko's so we were shopping one day & I decided to try a different style of Dansko - it is their new "tennis shoe". http://www.dansko.com/At Work/Womens/Footwear/Collections/Sanibel/Volley/Black Frog Coated Canvas I LOVE THEM!!! :loveya: They have a more comfortable footbed with more cushion. The heel height is a bit lower too - they feel more like a regular shoe. I also kinda switch back and forth between my Dansko's and Nike's. I think the biggest thing to remember is that your feet, ankles and legs are not gonna be "fresh" at the end of a 12 hour shift, but you have to find what works best for you. And some days, no matter what shoes you wear, your whole body is gonna be crying at the end of your shift!!
5. This was the biggest reason I started looking. I injured my back (at home) at the end of April and I have been on work restrictions since then. I am in my second round of PT and am finally feeling better. I know that it is just a matter of time before the hospital job leads to more injury. I work on a floor with very few "walkie, talkies"...lots of tugging and lifting. Thanks for the advice!
6. OK...thanks everyone!! You have made me realize that I am making the right move for me! I just needed to hear someone besides my husband say it. I know he knows me well, but he doesn't get the nursing part of it! Thanks again!!!
7. More good advice. There are lots of reasons I applied for & got the position in the office - I need to remember those! I have only spent 2 half days in the office so I need to remember that there are lots of things I haven't seen yet & that none of the girls look bored - they are not stressed, but not bored. I also need to remember that I can make the job what I want - if I want to be bored, I am sure I could manage that...but I also can look for ways to be busy & effective. I know an office is a busy place with lots of patients and appointments...I want the patients to feel like more than just another pt who the dr. saw for 5 minutes! I like the education part of nursing.
8. I have actually agreed to stay on contingent with the floor I am on currently - I didn't want to burn the bridge. Thanks for the advice! As for "getting itchy" - I had to laugh at that since I am going to a derm office!
9. Thank you for this statement! You are right! I think I am just afraid of change - and who isn't??
10. I graduated from nursing school a year ago. I have been working on an oncology/hematology/medsurg floor in a major hospital in Columbus, OH. I have recently had opportunities to be the Charge Nurse on the 3-11 shift & been told that I do very well. The Charge Nurse has now taken another position within the hospital and her position is open. My manager has made comments like, "hey you could be my charge nurse". I have been offered and accepted a position in a Dermatology office. It will obviously be LESS stress/no weekend or holidays, but I am worried I might be bored. I am not sure what to do now. Do I talk to my current manager about staying on as the new Charge or do I take the leap and go to the office? Thoughts??
11. Oh my gosh...your EXACT words could have come out of my own mouth!!! I am a new nurse and am wondering what the heck I have gotten myself into. I am hoping I can get my "one year" of experience so I can figure out where else/what else I can do.
12. slmarsh - apparently I do not have the ability to reply to private messages yet....ugh! If you send another message with an alternate way to contact you, I'd be glad to answer your questions.
13. slmmarsh - I am a 7th quarter student at Columbus State - in the on-line program. I did have a couple of clinicals at Riverside and loved the hospital, so it worked out when I was able to get a position as a PSA. I started out full-time thinking I could handle that & going to school (I had worked 32 hours at my previous job)...but the PSA position is extremely physically demanding & I have ended up working 24 hours a week (3 days). This quarter, I also have clinical 2 days a week. I have heard from fellow students that being in one of the hospital systems is the only way to get hired right now - no one seems to be hiring new grads from outside. My husband & I looked at it this way...we had to take a small step back in order to take a giant step forward...and it's all working out & falling into place!! My best advice is have a plan, stick to it & all the hard work/turmoil will be worth it in the end.
14. I took the plunge about 6 1/2 months ago. It hasn't been easy financially - I took a 50% pay cut - but it was part of the big plan. I took the job as a tech after my 4th quarter (of 7) in nursing school. The experience has been invaluable & getting my foot in the door of the organization (one of the biggest in Columbus, OH) was priceless...my nurse manager has offered me a job upon graduation in June!!! Nothing in life that is worth it is ever easy....but if you have a dream, go for it. It will all work out!! Good Luck!
15. funny thing......i just finished my 1st quarter of ns & all of these things already ring soooo true!!!! lol!!! being in an on-line program with discussion boards, i can add one: :offtopic:stop posting irrelevant posts that have nothing to do with class material - you are not funny. you are annoying and inappropriate. if you want to address an issue, send an email!!
