  1. Congratulations justwant2beanurse!!!! You must be thrilled!!!!
  2. I took Microbiology at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, CA last summer over a 6 week period. Not sure if they are offering it again this summer.
  3. I applied to a scholarship that SM had posted on their website. I have made it to the final round of applicants. Although the scholarship I applied to is closed now, I encourage everyone to apply to as many scholarships as possible to increase your odds. Especially since we all already have Bachelor's degrees, and many federal grants are not available. Besides, people spend 50k on their cars and this is our education that we are talking about. It is hard to know what the future will hold, and I know that some people have a hard time getting hired as a new grad in this economy....but have you ever talked to someone who went to nursing school and never found a job....ever. I have not. I recently spoke with an elderly couple at my work. They said their granddaughter just graduated from the SM ABSN and cannot find work. My heart skipped a beat, and then the woman continued her statement. She said her granddaughter only wants to work in pediatrics and that is the only job she has/will apply to. I think that as new grads you have to just get your foot in the door and start somewhere, even if it is not ideal. I will never forget talking to a SM grad nurse at my work recently and he told me his only regret was not doing it sooner. (He is in his late 30's). Lets all think positive and remember that our dream career is worth the sacrifice!
  4. I am glad I am not the only one that has an empty mailbox...I really thought I would hear from SM by today. The waiting is torturous. I will be thrilled to get in, but is anyone else besides me still nervous about the cost of attendance?
  5. Just got the mail...nothing in it from SMU.
  6. Samuel Merritt's website announced the change to the TEAS exam. Check there for deadlines. I remember reading the NET was good for another year.
  7. That is great news... Congratulations!!!!
  8. VERY COOL!!!! I bet you are thrilled! Sounds like the San Francisco letters are being sent out first! There are 48 very happy people out there right now!!!! Enjoy your trip!
  9. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!! You are one step closer to becoming an RN! I wish you the very best in your journey and hope that you enjoy the challenges and rewards! I applied to Oakland for Summer of 2009, and am still waiting for a response! CHEERS!!!!
  10. I am excited to get my acceptance letter, but also just trying to enjoy the calm before the storm...the ABSN will be a lot of work, but well worth it. I have also started studying for the NCLEX. We won't have much time to do this while in the program, and it may actually help us in the program. I wish all of you the best, and cannot wait to find out where we end up. I believe that everything happens for a good reason, and if I/you don't get accepted it is because a better opportunity is waiting for us.
  11. Hello! I applied for Samuel Merritt's ABSN in Oakland, CA Nov. 1st, 2008. I should find out late Feb 2009 whether I was accepted or not. I took Pharmacology at Contra Costa College in San Pablo. It was a "hybrid" class, meaning you only go in once a month (4 times total) to take an exam. However, you are welcome to go in for the weekly lecture if you want to to, but its not required. It is all self-study with power points. I learned a lot and would take the class again. I took Pathophysiology at Moorepark college online. There was a lot of required reading, however if you complete all required weekly assignments, you will do just fine. My teacher was Linda Loiselle. The class seems intimidating at first, but the teacher realizes it takes a few weeks to adjust to the online format and is flexible with due dates and assignments in the beginning until everyone is on the same page. I would take it again! Good luck to all Samuel Merritt ABSN applicants, I hope to be in class with some of you this summer of 2009!
  12. I wheeled a mid-30 yr old female to CT scan for abdominal pain. While sitting in the control room, the CT scan of her abdomen and pelvis revealed a eye liner or lip liner, stuck up her. It was probably a newer one because it sure was long! I wondered how long she spent trying to get it out before coming to the ED.
  13. A ED triage nurse once told me that he brought back a patient with the chief complaint of "chapped lips".
  14. Samuel Merritt 12 month ABSN in Oakland, CA. Science GPA 4.0 Cumulative GPA ??? Applied Nov 1st, they send me letter late January. Plan B: Apply to local ADN programs keep my job at the local hospital.
  15. ME!!!! I can hardly wait! I am taking Pharmacology as a prerequisite for an accelerated program, however I am in class with nursing students that have already started the ADN program....Its almost a tease...I am so close to getting in. What I have learned in Pharmacology and Pathophysiology is that they build upon the Micro, Anatomy, Path, and Chem classes so i hope you never forget them. They could save a person's life! It can be an emotional rollar coaster sometimes, but the rewards will definetly out weigh the sacrifice! Good Luck!
  16. Thank you for your honest words! I loved how you said that you must have empathy to be a nurse and that you do not have to know everything,,,,who could anyways? I am taking my pre-reqs and hope to start an accelerated program next spring.
