Any Augusta Tech ADN Hopefuls?!?!
Treetop, Parrothead, and Vanesia, Hello! Hope you're all doing well and that your finals are progressing and you're just DESTROYING them!! haha So I know this is not a sure-fire way to do anything, but was hoping you could give me a feel for my chances. I have 4 classes that I could cram in from Jan to Mar and then get my app finished before April. If I did well in those, I've calculated my pre-requisite GPA as 3.36 for all core (six classes plus HUMN, ENG, SOC, etc), or a 3.67 for the six classes Vanesia believed to be the core. Assuming those GPAs, a great PAX-RN score, the fact that I'm a man, and I have clinical experience as an EMT, how well do you think my chances are. I understand it's incredibly competitive and they only took 40. I'm going to talk to the school today and find out as much as I can, but I have to make a choice about taking those classes soon or not. So....not cop-outs. Just give me your opinion! You guys are great and I'm proud of y'all for making it into that first class! God Bless! Bhusn

Navy Nurse Candidate Program- Any 2010 Grads?
I have a question for you guys...I know it's not precisely on topic but since you're all here.... How challenging was it to get accepted to the NCP? I'll be starting nursing classes with a nursing gpa of 3.13 and institutional of 2.70. I screwed around my first few years, took time off, got back on track, and now am wondering what my hurdles will be. Thanks!

2010 Navy ODS Class
Hey...don't worry about the swim! I'm a club swim coach (I coach swimmers year round at all competitive levels). I coach the learn to swim kids all the way to the competition, six days a week kids. Don't worry. It's easy! If you REALLY want to learn to swim, figure out where the nearest club team is (USA Swimming's website would be a good source of info) and contact one of the coaches. You can either do the Masters team (for adults), maybe get an assistant coach to help you, or even one of the older kids to help you. The BIGGEST piece of advice I can give is don't wait until the last minute, learn to LOVE and relax in the water, and get someone with experience (even if it costs a bit more...it's a LIFELONG skill)! Good luck!

Can someone please pity me?!
So, I know this is gonna sounds weak, selfish, and pathetic but I just want some pity. I am a pre-nursing student rounding out the final set of nursing specific pre-reqs. I had advising two weeks ago, and my wonderful, blessed, amazing adviser very nonchalantly said that "Oh, your grades are good enough, you only need to make Cs in the remainder of your science courses, and you're a shoe-in." Whew! Boy did that take a load off my shoulders! BUT!!! While she recognized how hard my schedule is this semester and has advised me to take the next sets of classes SLOWLY just to relax before the storm, I'm just finding myself struggling with my current load. I'm taking Chem 2, AP2, Span 1, Macroeconomics (online), and Guitar (was looking for a fun place to relax during the week, but it's proving to be a bit of work). Spanish and guitar are both HIGH A's. Macro will ultimately be a B in the end but it's ******* me off with the amount of work required. But JON BON JOVI, AP2 and Chem 2 are freakin hard! I know, I know...(said very stoically by the old crusty windbag they keep stashed in the Bio department) "Ana-toe-mee and Phys-ee-ology are the BASIS of your future professions!" If I could just be a student and nothing else, I probably would be less inclined to complain. BUT, not only do I take a full load, but I work six days a week for a total of around 20 hours/wk where I am in a position of responsibility and authority (aka, not riding a desk where I can do my hw on a slow day). On Sundays, I lead a church group for middle school boys that takes ALL afternoon, and I also volunteer one weekend a month with another group. It's just all SO time consuming! I barely have enough time to do laundry that'll keep me going let alone get it all clean, folded, pressed, and put away. Healthy eating? Out. Exercise? Out...and that's one of the MOST missed. Free time? Out. Social life? Out. I'm not looking for a magical fix it. I just would like someone else to read this and said "you poor unfortunate soul," and then go on about their day. I only have 36 more days of lecture and then I am officially done with ALL HARD pre-nursing classes and just that much closer to being a nurse! Thanks for letting me whine guys!

Nursing at Ft. Gordon
Hey, I live here in Augusta. Fort Gordon is great IF you ask me, but I don't have many other Army hospitals to compare to. Augusta is big enough to have lots to do, but small enough to not hate your life! You can easily get to Columbia w/in an hour and ATL w/in 3. Summers are VERY hot, but honestly people either stay inside, or find ways to enjoy it despite the heat. Honestly I don't even notice it any more. Winters are usually mild with temps in the 30s during the day at the coldest part of the year. Fort Gordon itself is very large and only getting large. It is host to some MAJOR commands to include: Eisenhower Hospital (referred to as "dee-dee-Mac" for an acronym), NIOC (Navy Intel w/NSA attached, and Marines and Air Force to augment), Signal school for all four branches, amongst many others. I think it's a great base, great town, great atmosphere. Want to know more, just write some specifics!

Medical College Georgia
Hey guys! Well not to be the voice of dissent, but the rumor regarding MCG's program not continuing is just that...a rumor. My mom works there and I'm a prenursing student and when I heard, she went to go look into it for me. She called the nursing dept. and they said that that was simply incorrect. Also, ASU will no longer be offering an ASN program. It ended this past spring. They will now be offering BSN only. Hope this all helps! Bhusn

Schools?
Petty question, but if you're in the Navy Nurse Candidate program on Navy money, and you haven't been to OIS yet, when you graduate college do you technically commission, or do they make you wait until you have been to OIS? I'm just trying to compare to like my friends in Marine PLC...except that they have been to at least a portion of their training. Also, when you're in the scholarship program, do they make you sign on w/the Reserves?

Navy Officer Nurse Corp
I haven't served there as a nurse, but I can tell you that the clinic there is responsible for the health and wellbeing of EVERY SINGLE RECRUIT that ever comes into the Navy (and all the people who train them). LOTS of blisters, sprains, cuts, burns, dehydration, hypochondriases, etc

Kings Bay, GA Naval Base
I spent a month of hell there doing MAA (cop) training. What do you want to know? It's primary purpose is to run the Boomers (nuclear subs). Most of the base you're not even allowed to see unless you have a purpose, and it gets REALLY fun during lockdown drills, because they roll out two Bradley's in front of the main gate, and everyone from cook to cleaner grabs a gun and hits the field between the main gate and the subs. They even bust out the attack dogs, the counter-sniper groups, and more .50 cals than you'd care to stare at! As for medical, I never needed any medical, but I'm pretty sure everyone who needs it just goes to Jacksonville (NAS Jax). If memory serves (2003) and since I wasn't driving, but JAX is only like an hour away. Hope this helps!

Any Nursing Students in Ga???
Good luck today Schreibere...I'm SO jealous of you! Yeah, ASU is kinda stiff about the prereqs, but in some ways I can understand. I know you'll love USC Aiken....it produces the most sought after graduates, both for knowledge and personality...at least so I've been told! Good luck and share the good/bad/ugly about USC Aiken after you've been there a while!

Any Nursing Students in Ga???
I'm prenursing at Augusta State. It's a good school. It and USC-Aiken (which gives in-state to people from Augusta/GA?) are the two best schools around here. MCG gets a lot of pr and the kids who go there love it, but the nurses in the field like their grads the least, AND their grads score lowest of the three schools on NCLEX. 2.92 might get you in at one of those programs, but it would be highly dependent on your Nursing GPA (computed using ONLY prereq grades). Give ASU a call...they'll help you over the phone (ask for an advisor..don't talk to the secretaries)! Hope this helps!

Help: Taking out stains on uniform?
Twenty mule team borax. Soak whites 24hrs in a medium concentration of borax. IF it will come clean, this will work. We use it on old navy uniforms that have become dingy that need refurbishing! Hope this helps!
