  1. I am a ER nurse from Illinois. I need help from anyone from Florida!! I have a friend who has been missing since April 18th. She was last heard from while traveling from Florida to TN. She texted a friend letting them know she was not feeling well and was pulling over to rest. She has not been heard from since that time. Her family and detectives believe she was last in Citrus County Florida. Her father is going down to do his own search of hospitals, parking lots and churches. Anyone who might be able to assist with his search by giving suggestions or if you know of anyone who can help with the search that would be great. We have started a facebook group. MISSING PERSON: HELP FIND CHALE ASHLEY. Please spread the word!! Here is a news article about our search. CCSO looking for missing, endangered adult | Citrus Daily - Citrus County News Thanks, Monica, RN

I am at a camp out east. We had several cases but were able to keep it mainly in one age group. When the girls had a fever they went home until fever free for 24 hours then they could return. No camps where I was at were shut down because of flu cases, and believe me there were some camps that had alot of cases. I was at a 8 week camp, so the girls would be home for usually five days and come back to camp. We did a few things that I think really helped us contain it. Luckily we have a big healthcenter so we were able to truely isolate the sick girls. We had all the mattresses in the rooms switched to plastic, so we could wipe them down, we took out the self serve salad bar, and had someone passing out salad and dressing. We had a timeout at each meal, all of the dining hall would stand up and would sit down once they used purrell then once everyone sat down we would eat. We also took temps on the buses as the campers were on their way, we took temps 24hours later, then we would monitor bunks that had a case for the next 48 hours after exposure. I think we had it done and over with until visiting day then we saw more cases. For girls that had a fever we would test them with the rapid influenza a/b test. It was a very busy summer in the healthcenter for sure!! I think that was one reason you didnt see alot of chatter about it on here over the summer, because healthcenters were so much busier!! I work in PA and have about the same size camp. Our healthcenter hours are 8 to 10. We always have two nurses on. We either work from 8 to 3 or 3 to 10 and we only get one day off a week. We have 5 total RN's so we take about one night of call a week. It seems to work really well for us! Monica,RN
  4. Most camps let you bring your children. Mine are 8 and 11 and they come with me and are regular campers. My camp I get paid plus I receive free tuition for my kiddos, which is really nice, but some camps will only offer free tuition, so you need to ask!! All of my friends who are camp nurses take their kids with them!! My kids absolutely love it!! We take off for 8 weeks in the summer and leave the hubby at home to fend for himself!! Monica, RN
  5. Welcome to camp nursing!! I work in the ER and I understand what you mean about always use to taking care of those who are truely sick. We workup almost everyone. I think the biggest thing to remember is that most kids are healthy!! When taking care of kids I think of what I would do with my own. When I have a kiddo come in with abdominal pain at camp, I do what I would with my own. I ask them if they have used the bathroom, I ask if they have eaten, that kind of thing. And let me tell you kids get anxious bellys at camp. It might be a good idea to see if you can shadow a school nurse. You can see how they interact with the kids and they would have great advise for you. It would also be good to shadow a ER Nurse where they deal with alot of peds, then you can really see what a sick kid looks like. I think that helps me the most is that I know what a bad break, asthma attack, or a dehydrated kid looks like. And ask lots of questions!! It might be a good idea to go the local ER near the camp and meet with someone, and ask if you could call and get advise if needed. Good luck!! Camp nursing has been the greatest experience!! Monica
  6. Many camps have winter offices and are already hiring nurses. By this time a lot of camps know what staff they have returning back for the next summer. My camp really tries to get the returning staff's contracts done by the end of the year. I am also a school nurse and love camp nursing! I found my camp around this time!! I thought about what type of camp I wanted to work at ,and looked for ads but also just looked online from the perspective of looking for a camp for my girls. I knew I wanted a uniform all girls camp and that helped narrow down my search. Most camps have websites with hiring information on them. Good luck on the search! Monica, RN
  7. I look foward to spending time with the other Nurses and Doctors. We have so much fun!! The great Adorandack chairs outside the health center!! Reading out in the sun!! Seeing all of my camp friends and the killer nightly games of Scrabble!! And seeing how much the campers have grown!! Monica, RN
  8. I am going to an all girls camp in Honesdale, Pa for eight weeks with both of my girls. This will be my 2nd year as a camp nurse!! I had so much fun last year and can't wait to go back!!
