Texas Tech Fall 2015 RN-BSN
Hello, I also applied and am waiting for my acceptance. Texas Tech requires statistics for admission. I was not accepted the first time I applied because I had not taken stat yet. Also, from what I understand they do accept everyone who meets the minimum requirements. Req letters are not necessary. As long as you have the required classes, meet the minumum GPA, and have a license in good standing, etc you should be accepted. I also read on the website that we would find out by 4/15 but I can no longer find that information. I am hoping to find out soon. I certainly meet all of the minimum requirements but still want that acceptance email! Good luck to all!

Allowing Pt's Parent to Take Meds Home
You should think like a nurse rather than a mom. Give the medications in the hospital. That's your responsibility to your patient.

For those who will be doing clinicals at Plaza, your clinical instructor is really great. She is so calm and nice. Good luck!

It's awesome! I have had a great first semester. It is what you make it though, so always remember that. Keep a positive attitude (and it will be hard). NS is so tough, but also rewarding. Listen to advice from your instructors, study almost everyday, and practice in the skills lab. And of course take some time off for yourself and your family/friends. Just don't fall behind because you will have a heck of a time catching up if you can at all. I met my closest nursing school buddies on Allnurses! I truly love them and am so glad to have them by my side in nursing school!! Good luck and I hope you all love it as much as I do.

Hey, I would recommend going with V-neck. Everyone in this semester has one. All of the clinical instructors will have different requirements, but some are VERY particular and I don't think they will be changing their ways anytime soon, lol. A lot of us ladies bought the grey's anatomy ones and are actually pretty cute. Yes you will want a nude bra so it doesn't show up, and also socks that are higher than your ankles. No colorful undies that show up when you lean over either (They will tell you all of that at orientation). Hmmm....can't really think of anything else right now. I would def go with V-neck, but it can be fashionable, it doesn't have to be the super plain designs. And you can have your tattoos show anytime you are not at the hospital. Don't worry about class, it's casual just like your pre-reqs. And you can wear flip flops and all of that to skills lab. It's not like the science labs in pre-reqs either. Hope this helps!! I'm excited to be finishing the first semester of nursing school!!! It's been awesome!

Hey I just wanted to remind y'all, TNSA also sells scrubs for $2 a piece. You may be able to go to the TNSA office after orientation to see what they have. Last semester, they gave us a mini tour of the TREC and that is where we picked up our nursing skills pack (from TNSA at TREC). $2 per top, $2 per bottom, and $2 per lab coat. Most should already have patches sewn on. They are uniforms donated by students who are graduating and it's really a great deal. Also, Scrubs etc is way cheaper than Life Uniform, even without the 15% discount. Just FYI.

I was accepted to the nursing program last app period. Our schedules were posted at the campus and we were able to go up there and look at them. They may do it differently this time because of security at the TREC campus or something. I can't remember when we found out our schedules, but it was before orientation. I knew my schedule before my CPR class as well (I did it through TNSA). One plus about doing it through TNSA is that you will be with other nursing students and may make some friends before school starts. :) Anyway, if you didn't get your answer about the skills pack, it has to be paid for at business services. You will take your receipt to orientation and pick up your skills pack then. It's a huge bag full of all sorts of stuff... needles, syringes, gloves, all sorts of fun stuff! Congrats again to all of you. It's very exciting!! Try not to stress over this stuff too much, you will have plenty to stress about when school starts!!

M/W 1-7 clinical T/Th 10-12 lecture Thurs 1:30-4:30 skills Skills will always be on a day of your lecture, not the day of clinical. It's only 1 day per week. the morning clinical is from 7-1 I think.

@txhusker-I believe there was only one Saturday clinical offered (10 students) this semester. They will put you at a hospital (make sure that you update your address with the nursing department, not just the school if you have moved recently) near where you live. The only Saturday clinical this semester was offered at JPS. Maybe they will add more Saturday clinicals and afternoon classes this coming semester? Like dreamer said, you can switch schedules with someone but you have to switch the entire schedule. After the first semester, you get to pick your schedule including clinical location/time. If you would like, I can post my class times so that you all can have an idea of what it could look like. Just let me know.

My schedule works out for me. I quit working right before school started. I really don't see how I could work and do this at the same time. I also have no children. I do plan to get a job after this semester is over (part-time). Nursing school is extremely time consuming which is why it is so hard in my opinion. I spend about 20 hours in class/clinical each week and about 30 additional hours studying and in the skills lab(on my own time, not for class). The first two weeks of school had me thinking that it was sort of easy. And it was. But not anymore. It's overwhelming at times. That being said, you really need to have good time management skills. If you do, then you can make time to do the things you want for fun every now and then. I wouldn't recommend doing those things the weekend before an exam or every weekend, but I do think it's important to make time for yourself and enjoy time with fam and friends. I do know several people who have jobs and make it work. I know some who are struggling with that. Some work part time on weekends only, etc. If you don't have to work, then don't. If you do have to, try to figure out a way to do it part time. Save your money now if you haven't started already. You will need it. Also, really try to keep a positive attitude in school. Take the bad with the good. Nursing school is awesome. I have made wonderful friends, I joined TNSA and have been able to do some volunteer work. Nursing school has been a great experience for me, and I hope it is for you all too! TCC has wonderful facilities and most of the instructors are more than helpful. The classes are much more interesting than Micro, AP, or chem. You will be learning stuff that you can apply in clinical, and it really applies to what you want to do for a living.

Hey all! Not sure if this helps, but Student an Txhusker are correct. You would not be able to take other nursing classes and graduate early. It is a set program and you will have to follow it. Also, the classes will all be at the TREC so that must be an error. Your first semester is Foundations. You will take Foundations(theory), clinical (for foundations), and nursing skills. I believe that your first semester is the only one that you take a skills class. Anyway, those are the three classes you will take the first semester. There should be 10 people per clinical class and for the most part, those same 10 will be in the other two classes. There may be one or two students doing a hybrid class or something. Other clinical groups will be in your other classes (skills and theory). Hope that helps! I know how exciting this is for you!

Student-No, I didn't pay for two drug tests. I found out about TCC before the drug test for WC was due (barely) so I just paid for TCC. I was super bummed about paying for the background check 2X's though. TCC does the check through Group1 and then from what I understand, at the end of the program you will do one through the FBI and TXDPS for the BON to sit for the NCLEX. At least that is the way one of my instructors explained it. When you do it for TCC you won't get a blue post card or anything. The parking is not as bad as I thought it would be. If I get there at the right time I can usually find a spot at the TREC campus (like today). But tomorrow I know I won't find a spot there so I will go straight to the TRE garage. I've had to use overflow 2-3 times. Next week I start clinicals so 2 days of the week I won't even be at the campus. But yeah, the program is great. I had doubts before I started but now I KNOW I made the right choice at TCC. I absolutely love nursing school. Plus it's really close to my home which helps a lot. Good luck to all! I know the waiting game is no fun but enjoy your time before nursing school starts!!

Online Nursing Schools
I'm not sure of any online schools for BSN. Have you considered an ADN program?

Clinical Hair
You can also ask someone at a hair salon for help with this issue too. They should be able to give you some tips for styling your hair.
-
Clinical Hair
You may want to think about having your hair texturized (thinned out). You can have that done at an upscale salon. You will be able to keep your long hair but have it weigh a LOT less. Then every other time or every two times that you get your hair cut, have it thinned out as well. You would be amazed at how much lighter it will be and easier to blow dry and style. Good luck!

Tarrant County Spring 2012 Applicants
Hey guys, I applied and was accepted to the fall program at TCC. I just wanted to wish you all the best of luck! I'm going in to my 4th week and am loving it!!! Student- All of the nursing schools do not do the same background check!! WC used L1 but TCC used Group One. I was accepted to both schools last semester and did two background checks through two different companies(and paid for each one).... There was also no fingerprinting for TCC like at WC. Also, we had about a month to take care of everything we needed to take care of, it wasn't really the entire summer. When you get your acceptance packet, it will have a checklist of things you need and when you need them by. There will also be information about what books to purchase and other suggested books. Obviously you can go ahead and get CPR certified if you aren't and get your immunizations done. Be sure you have your varicella vaccine or titer done. They will not accept a note from your parent or doc like in the past. You will need to have the actual titer, or shot record showing you are immunized. Other than that, the background check takes about 10 minutes and is done online. The drug screen takes a short time but they will have a specific set of dates right before school starts for you to do that. All of your skills supplies are purchased through the TNSA office. They also have uniforms that are donated by students finishing school and sell them for $2 each. lab coats and scrubs. They said that some still have tags on them, so that could be worth looking into. As far as the math goes, we have our dosage calculation test in a week. We use dimensional analysis and is actually quite easy. I would suggest looking into how to do that if you want to get a head start. That is something I was very nervous about, but with DA it is easy. Every problem is worked the same way...so as long as you know how to do DA you will be fine. They actually took about 2 hours at orientation and we worked problems, and we continue to work them at school in our clinical. Def use the problems on the TCC nursing site. It will help you! Other than that, it's just a lot of reading. There really hasn't been any homework. Just TONS of reading....and I mean TONS. I've made lots of friends, I like all of my profs, and am loving nursing school all around. It's just awesome, I don't know what else to say about that. I wish you guys the best of luck!!!! I hope that some of this info helps you out a little.

how competitive are texas nursing schools?
It is really going to vary from school to school. Most schools don't have the exact same criteria. An example is, some may only look at your science GPA an entrance exam scores. It just varies. I would suggest looking at the nursing program websites in your area and see what they require for acceptance. It seems that you still need about 15 hrs before you can apply, which could also bring your GPA up quite a bit. I don't think you should be discouraged. I would shoot for making A's in the classes you need, and retake any classes that you can to bring up your GPA if the program will accept that. Nursing school is very competitive to get into. Once you are in, it is quite a workload. I would definitely try to make A's and then go from there. You could also look at applying to a couple of schools, not just 1. You will most likely need to bring your GPA up in order to get accepted.

Is this a HIPAA violation?
Okay, so maybe it is a HIPAA violation if she gave the date that the patient came into the hospital? I did find a list of HIPAA regulated patient identifiers and "dates" is on the list. Either way, it seems like there is a fine line that she seems VERY close to crossing.
-
Is this a HIPAA violation?
Again, she is not my coworker. No, it is not the same thing at all...at least not from my a point of view. I don't do clinicals at the location where my friend works, nor am I employed there. Not to mention, I did not say what hospital it was, I just said in my area. So, I don't really think that is what is going on here, even unintentionally.
-
Is this a HIPAA violation?
This person is not my coworker. I never asked or implied that I was interested in reporting this person to anyone. I was simply curious about it. I am not a whistle blower. I am a new nursing student. We have talked a bit about HIPPA and what is okay and not okay. I saw that post on FB this afternoon and got my wheels turning a little bit. I was curious, not angry or looking to turn her in. Thank you for your feedback.

Is this a HIPAA violation?
The friend who wrote the post actually said that when they (doctor or nurse, not sure) were assessing her, the mom freaked out and took the daughter out of the ER. So, she (the child) did not get whatever treatment she needed.

Is this a HIPAA violation?
Thank you all for the comments. This is very interesting. Also, just to be clear, I do not work with this person. I am friends with her on facebook but do not actually work with her. I also cannot say that she was posting while she was at work. She may have been on facebook after work....I just don't know that. I am a nursing student and had my first clinical last week. We did an orientation and talked a lot about HIPPA and HITECH. They were telling us that we are not allowed to take photos and if we posted on FB a picture of a patient's wound it would be a violation, even if that patient's face was not in the photo. They told us that if we were in the cafeteria and were taking pictures with our nursing school friends, and a patient's mom or someone was in the picture in the background, that would be a violation as well. I was pretty shocked to see this person posting that information on FB.

Is this a HIPAA violation?
I have a friend on Facebook who works (not a nurse, but works at the desk) in the ER at a hospital in my area. She sometimes posts things on facebook that happen at work in the ER. Recently, I saw that she made a post about the shift she was working, the department she works in(ER), what her job is(checking pts in). It does say on her FB page which hospital she works in, but that info was not in the actual post I am referring to. So in this specific post, she wrote about something that happened that night in the ER. She was saying that a lady and child came in to the ER and she checked them in, the child was acting like she was abused she could tell by her body language. She wrote a long post about this an that CPS was called (not sure if the hospital called or she did on her own), an that she hopes the lady rots in h***. Anyway, she did not write any of their names or anything, but just told the story about what happened. Is that a HIPPA violation? I have just started nursing school and am really curious about this. I know I personally would NOT post that type of info, but still would like other input.

Mr. Joeboto-I was in CPR on Wed and they didn't give anyone CPR cards. They told us that our clinical insturctor would have them and make a copy and pass the out to us. I thought it was kind of weird, but that's what they said.
