  1. ...as long as its compatible with your washer, mine only uses He soap...
  2. i know what you mean...a certain tv show labeled uniform- does indicate that they need to be washed in a delicate manner-i have heard that they do shrink in hot water. i have worked in surgery and o.b. where scrubs are handled by the hospital. prior to this i worked on the floor, we wore white uniforms that could be bleached and they held up well. i can't understand why a manufacturer would make such useless garments for nurses! i would get my refund and look into buying some hardier wear. you certainly want to be able to bleach them when you wash them! bleach is most effective against the aids virus and hepatitis. ideally, hospitals and all healthcare environments should supply the scrubs...i certainly don't want someone in dirty scrubs hovering over the produce at the grocery store-yuck!
  3. I really appreciated a textbook called 'Basic Drug Calculations" by Meta Brown and Joyce Mulholland It looks like Amazon has some starting @ $.30
  4. patients that do doctors in other nations. ...is now available for a limited time on dvd
  5. I found this link for WHO rankings: http://www.who.int/whr/2000/en/whr00_en.pdf Page 164
  6. You've totally missed the point by taking what I've said literally. Have you never heard of docudrama? I can't be the first person to use documovie, Google it. Art uses different materials or 'media' to represent the view of the artist or author etc. If you worked with a plastic surgeon or any surgeon you can't say they never use their own artistic interpretation in technique or execution of a procedure. The movie references chosen were to illustrate a point that insurance companies would rather only service perfect specimens who don't need much in the way of health care. And that it would be be helpful since they only live until they were 30-35yrs old before 'rejuvenation' (Logan's Run) In a Brave New World 'The year of our Ford' was actually in reference to the corporate/consumerism based society. Which is kind of what these corporate giants promote. Also the use of withholding oxygen and other nutrients from selected babies while they were developing to create different class levels also melds well with insurance corporations practices of with holding care...
  7. This is exactly why there needs to be an UHC. Bean counters and laypeople in the insurance companies are deciding what care can be given to you and are over-riding what your Doctor's treatment for you will be. Didn't you even see the movie Sicko? It addresses the fact that insurance companies are withholding reimbursement for your treatment and are thereby determining your treatment. And Gee why should they be liable for anything? Are you liable for your job? Why should the insurance companies liability be any different? Here's a movie you may like, it's called Logan's Run. Or better yet how about a nice Eugenics program. Ever read A Brave New World or see the movie Gattaca? Maybe those are better solutions in the eyes of insurance companies. If someone's not open minded enough to watch a docu-movie that is related to their line of work, what kind of assessment skills does that person possess? They are too close minded to see. The movie does not say anything derogatory about healthcare workers. Anyway we apparently have forgotten - 'Art is a lie that tells the truth.' (Picasso)
  8. When I was in school we were not taught to pre-inflate. Ten years later, the hospital I worked at wanted the balloons pre-inflated. Ten years later AORN standards said there was no need to pre-inflate because you could weaken the balloon and have you ever had one that failed?
  9. I won't name names but somebody needs a hug Dude.
  10. 19yo...29 years ago?!!!No way!
  11. I couldn't help but notice the ten so-called "facts" comparing health care of the US, Canada, France, and the UK, seem to be from a group called the Heritage Foundation (The Foundry ) whose mission is 'to promote conservative public policies...' I believe this information differs from other reports like the WHO. But then this list of "Facts" rings familiar doesn't it? Kinda like the WOMD "Facts" of the previous REGIME. I can't for the life of me understand why people in the healthcare field would want anything but the best for mankind. We went into a career of caring for people didn't we? Instead I hear comments such as; "if you can't afford it (insurance) then you don't deserve it... or those people (an elderly couple on medicare) are leaching off the system." And what if we don't provide care for immigrants, how will you feel when you or your family contract one of their exotic diseases like that drug-resistant form of TB? Were you taught to determine who is deserving of care? What would a compassionate person do?
  12. Not to mention the fine job done by the US postal service!
  13. I would have to disagree with the statement that people would use Nationalized Healthcare just because it is free. It may be utilized frequently in the beginning but I think it would level off after people started getting preventive and regular care. It certainly seems that it would reduce trips to the ER(which is very costly). We are the only civilized country without a National Healthcare system in place and I hope that changes soon. I have Canadian relatives and UK relatives who are very pleased with their healthcare. Those of us with insurance (albeit crummy healthcare insurance) have to pay a padded bill to make up for those without which is already a form of socialized care isn't it? I'd rather have my tax dollars go directly for healthcare rather than go thru a corrupt private health insurance provider. How many nurses have we all worked with that were unable to pay for insurance because it was too expensive? Are you saying nurses don't deserve healthcare if they can't afford it?
  14. As far as crushed meds thru G-tubes; I used to crush the meds that were compatible with crushing and use just a little bit of applesauce to bind the powder together then add water to this to make a slippery slurry, then add a little more water. This helps prevent it from clogging the tube ( sort of like making a creme base for cooking ). It may also help to call the pharmacist to convert as many meds as possible to liquid form. Hope this helps as far as Tube Feedings are concerned. PS: JACHO is a self-regulating "club" industry that needs some real (federal) regulating in it's place.
  15. :twocents:I'm very glad to hear you didn't lose your job. I think this experience is definitely a wake-up call. I hope I might be able to offer some suggestions. I think we have all found ourselves in some pretty bad work situations at one time or another. I have found that documenting everything will really make all the difference. Keep notes on everything that has transpired; about your working conditions, about the effect on patients, and things you would like to see changed. Save a copy for your personal files. With sentinel events such as this, there should have been a meeting of all involved(including the pharmacist and the MD). Everyone should be given the floor to offer their perspective. Only when the problem is identified can there be a solution presented. People are human and no one is perfect. But to perform efficiently, there needs to be less chaos! These conditions seem to be spreading innocuously throughout the healthcare system. Most facilities are seeing less $$ in reimbursements and therefore are making cuts in all the wrong places! As nurses, as long as we continue to deliver without complaint nothing will ever change. I also recommend the need to call your supervisor in charge to let them know you need more help! If this doesn't produce the desired results, write up an incident report - and not just the one time but every time this occurs! You may also want to contact the California Nurses Association to see how to organize some kind of nurse advocacy group(do this from home). Another source for you as well as other nurses would be the National Labor Relations Board. I could be mistaken but I think your employer is required to give you 15 min of breaktime for every 4 hours of work. I think the only way to stop the madness is to expose these conditions, get support with other nurses, and force these kinds of workplaces to change the current working conditions. This will help the patients as well as the workers. You are not alone.
