This thread reminds me of the timeI had knee surgery,involved in amva I was hit by a drunk driver. Up to that time I jogged 2 milesa day and worked out at my gym,suffice it to say I am in verygreat shape. Just prior to dischargeone of the floor nurses came in to give me a speil about exercise andnutrition. Most likely part of discharge instructions as per theorthopedist. This nurse was close to 275lbsand as she was talking to me aboutgradual exercise and not over doingit I just started busting out laughingat this nurse. I simply could notstop laughing. She left the roomand I never saw her again.

No there are not,I looked for 6 months. Mammographers are licensed radiographers with both a state and national license through the ARRT. The ARRT in Minnesota usually does not divulge gender criteria,however,the state does. In all, there are only about 39 states that license radiographers. Arizona for example is called the MRTBE, by calling each states agency,they will tell you gender ratio which is (0) zero male mammographers for those 39 states. For the remaining states one must call each facility that services mammography equipment.

It's true,at a county hospital in the Midwest,1981. But then,if you are new to nursing there would be much you would be surprised to know. Yet,who in 1981 would imagine that in 30 years there still exists inequality in nursing. That males in nursing are shunned from working in L&D and there are no male mammographers.

Very well said! Female patients who prefer a female nurse have always been accommodated from what I have seen. Yet, male patients are often ridiculed or talked about at the nurses station,despite a male nurse being available. I once walked into an intensive care unit that was staffed by all females and asked to use the restroom. That restroom on that unit was completely covered with full nude male foldouts from playgirl magazine. Now imagine a L&D unit staffed by all men with foldouts from playboy magazine in the unit restroom,wouldn't happen. Yet, there are no male mammographers anywhere in the united states. The training to be a mammographer is quite extensive, first requiring a 3 or 5 year program in radiology,followed by a comprehensive exam and a background check. Then cross training into mammography which takes at least 6 months,followed by another comprehensive mammography exam. To work as a trained and licensed mammographer takes minimum of 4 years. Men have been exclusively precluded from cross training into mammography, why? Visit your local urology clinic and you will find only females with 6 months or less minimum training performing everything from foley caths to urodynamic tests.

Absoultely, yet would a thread get so much attention if the title was female nurse on male urology post-op unit. I don't think so. There is much documentation on the web regarding female nurses and sexual misconduct and it is for the most part kept obscure.

Exactly This problem goes beyond double-standards,ethical standards and is rightly discrimination.

The type of care in australia,the gender breakdown and preferences are of no concern to me.As I said,there are no male mammographers here in the US, and no male L&D nurses from what I've seen. It is most likely that way for a reason, and if a female patient makes a concern about the staffing,would the male nurse at that point give her his 2 cents worth, before finding her a female nurse. Reverse the roles, how would the female nurse respond if a male patient requested a male nurse for an intimate procedure. Would it be appropriate for the male patient to be badgered about a staffing change.

Let's see, we have no male mammographers. Male nurses are essentially non-existentent in L&D units. Women,particularly nurses on this site say they prefer female nurses. Let's reverse the roles, are your male patients given choices. My urology experience is just as sacred as your birthing experience.

A quick review of state nursing disciplinary boards reveals female nurses have sexually assaulted their male patients and thus female nurses rank highest in boundary violations. So, equally true is the fact that male patients are at risk of being groped,hit on and having a female nurse way too happy to see them. Male patient privacy is low on the agenda and for good reasons. Male nurses have been considered predatory perverts and discriminated against in nursing schools and hospitals. I have never seen male nurses at L & D suites nor will you see any male mammographers. It is the institutions themselves that discriminate against males, not the female patient population. My urology experience is just as unique as your childbirth experience,yet there are no male cna's nurses etc at urology clinics,despite the fact that men apply for these jobs.

When you are confined to a nursing home there will be a weirdest,grossest,most pathetic old female nursing home patient thread that describes you. Hopefully, you will be able to read it and see the fun that they make of you. Then and only then can you reflect back and see how inappropriate it is to single out and make fun of patients.

According the state laws, one may secretly record conversations of other parties as long as your voice is in the conversation. You do not have to tell them. This may be done on the telephone as well.

Sorry if I came across that way. It was not aimed at you. I was agreeing with you and with that I mentioned if the roles were reversed it would be creepy as well.

Let's reverse the roles,how about the weirdest,funniest,most gross female teenager story,joke,patient and I'm the male nurse. See the point.

Let me please add to the grief. These same people on welfare insurance use the ER as their doctors office.They come to the er with abdomen pain and want a full course meal. They don't have to make the $300.00 copay that I have to pay when I go to the er and yet I am an employee. Furthermore,recently I went to a sister hospital where No one knew me. I was nice but got treated like crap,no privacy, (that's always expected for male patients) and rude people. So what else is new!

Many male nursing students I know of were discriminated against. Many female nurses,be them instructors,etc deliberately made an effort to keep men out of nursing,Why? You don't see male mammographers anywhere do you. This is just one example of an old concerted effort on the part of the female medical industry. Was it that men can't be caring professionals or that they can't be trusted around female patients. I have certainly seen and heard more unprofessional comments,acts by female nurses towards male patients than male providers of any kind around female patients.

What's even worse is someone who can't do simple math.Ever wonder where these people went to school.

" Female gossip is brutal regarding male counterparts" The guidelines of sexual impropriety according to every state Board of nursing state that it is considered unprofessional conduct to make sexually demeaning comments "about or to " a patient.

Why is it that when you type into yahoo " I hate female nurses" that there are over 20,000,000 hits?

Many state nursing boards are reporting a 1400 percent increase in previous felony convictions among nurses applying for nursing licenses since 1992. Is this just a sign of the times? Boundary violations are at an all time high and is a real problem for state nursing boards. Employers ask on employment application forms "have you ever been convicted of a crime". Should students be asked about criminal convictions prior to applying for nursing school? That's one deserving student who gets bumped.

It is sexist,yet female nurses complain that they get paid less than male nurses. What did they do when male nurses were a real rare item!

You mention that you will never pawn off your work. What if you worked in L&D, or should I say if you were even able to get a job in L&D. How much of your work would you have to pawn off? Unfortunately, trust in the nursing industry is and continuing to steadily decline. Have you looked at Bon state disciplinary records lately. Boundary violations are at an all time high,as if these nurses are going to work not to provide care,but rather to sexually stalk patients. Oh by the way i'm not referring to male nurses but it's female nurses that are responsible for this trend.Therefore what if a female nurse had to pawn off a male patient to you?
