  1. Thank you! I decided to post because I too was skeptical before applying to SU because of bad reviews. But you have to realize that many people only post reviews when they are upset. I am the type of student that learn well with little direction. I had no problem with SU. I attended one of the best undergraduate nursing programs in South Carolina and still felt like I taught myself a lot of the material and retained information only when I read material and books at home. I live in SC and obtained my clinical rotations here. I took the AANP. I completed the FNP track.
  2. I graduated from SU-Online in March and passed my boards on the first attempt a month later. I was prepared and had no problem with the program. I had several mid-term and final exams during my practicum courses. The course-work could be challenging at times and requires dedication and self-direction. It is not wise to procrastinate. As someone mentioned before, make sure you search for clinical sights in advance!
  3. Helping people was truly the reason I chose nursing. And it's the reason I chose to continue on with nurse practitioner. The money is nice too!! But besides the money, I volunteered before I even became a nurse. There are some people who only do it for the money but everyone does not fit that category. One thing I can't stand is a non compassionate or hateful nurse. The patients are already sick..leave your crap at home!
  4. When I was a new grad I wanted to go back immediately. I ended up waiting 3 years and I'm glad I did. There was no way I could have studied. I was too busy learning to be a floor nurse! Nursing was hardly like I learned in school. (theory-practice gap). I just started on my MSN 3 months ago and it helps to have experience. Where as in undergrad, I was confused about a lot of things-I understand what's going on in class now. My friend started her MSN right out of school and she really struggled. I believe if you are the type that can really multitask and learn a lot at once, go for it. As for that 2015 date, it is only a recommendation.
  5. My job has been trying to mandate this for some time now. All of the hospitals surrounding us are doing it. Next year is supposed to be the final year. I got the vaccine this year because I felt pressured. I figured I would go ahead and take it since it would soon be mandatory. We will have to wear a mask the entire flu season if we don't. Anyway, I became sick for 15 days! 15 days of immediate diarrhea after all meals. Even water. The tests I got looking for the problem were not cheap either. No more flu shots for me!
  6. Thank you PAMaleRN! I actually applied to the MSN FNP program and started class Monday. So far, everything is good and the instructors are helpful.
  7. Pt told me yesterday that she was just in last month getting an autopsy!! (biopsy)
  8. I had the same is, as I had no family where I lived. Since I worked 12 hrs, my bf worked the days I was off and vise versa. Later, I applied for day shift when it was available and that helped even more. We were working opposite shifts.
  9. I was 22 when I started!
  10. Our CNAs insert foleys. They are trained though. When I was a PCT I could draw blood.
  11. Im currently looking for clinicals also. Ive had much luck with my family doctor and pediatrician. Also, urgent care and free medical clinics were helpful.
  12. Thank you tutucathy for responding! Did you have to find your clinicals before you were accepted? This is driving me nuts. I personally think it's a weeding out process but I want in!
  13. I always "scrub to hub". I always figure, this is a direct entry line to the blood stream so it should at least be clean.
  14. I think you should keep the clinical portion in since you only have 2 months experience. That will make it look like you have a little more experience IMO. Could you hold out for a least 6 months? I've always heard HR looks for at least 6-12 months of experience for new hires. At the hospital I work at, you can transfer to any floor after 6 months of experience.
  15. Could be a perforated bladder. But if the urine was yellow after you reinserted the foley, maybe his member had stool on it during insertion at the other hospital? Maybe some contamination during insertion? Did the lab say it was a trace amount of stool?
  16. I meant 2 years 4 months!
  17. I have a dear friend that looks down her nose at floor nurses. She alway says, "what do y'all do all day" and "why wasn't this caught in time". I tell her she could never come down and take 7 patients. She would be in the corner crying with her 2 patients. I also her her that lots of times, she have monitors that let her know ahead of time, we have to us assessment skills or walk in the room and find someone near coded! It drives me crazy but I still love her though! Lol.
  18. When I was a NA' it killed when the nurse hunted me high and low to empty a urinal while she was in the room. I vowed never to do that. I felt by the time it took her 10 mins for me to finish what i was doing in another room, she could have done it. If I call the CNA, I am busy and really can't do it. Now we had one CNA that sat around on the phone all day. I got tired of busting my butt and back hurting every night while she sat around. I did call her a lot. Working as a nurse and NA, I have come across an equal share of lazy NAs and nurses.
  19. Hi. I went ahead and began the application process. I saw the 50/50 reviews also but many time I have found that people usually only go online and rate something when they are upset. I talked to someone in admissions and really liked what I heard. The lady emailed me tons of extra information that was not available online. There classes are "one at a time" with the theory like classes 5 1/2 weeks and more challenging classes 11 weeks. You may have up to a 29 day break between classes if you want or you can jump back in. Most books are available in their online library as an ebook for free. They are working on all books being available this way. The program lasts 2 1/2 years and they are ccne accredited. (I checked this myself). The school will also help you find places for clinicals if you are having a hard time doing so. Hope this information helps you :)
  20. Back when I was a nursing assistant, another assistant and I had to insert a Foley. After we are finished, the LOL states "I don't know what ya'll just did but that sure felt good"!
  21. I have worked Surgical (we also take Medical pts) for 3 years and I love it. There can be times of chaos but you learn a routine. Great organization is the key. As of now, I don't want to work in any other department.
  22. I'm thinking about starting South University. Is there anyone here attending and if so, how do you like the program. How are the classes formatted? Also, has it been difficult for anyone earning an online degee with NP to find a job? Thanks.
  23. NO. Im a PCT and Im not certified. I just had to pass fundamentals of nursing and med-surg 1. I too am looking a for a job. I have worked as a PCT for a year and there just isn't any jobs at my hospital. I graduated a month ago and take boards this weekend.
