Escort patients outside to smoke
The Hospital I work at is smoke free. If pts want to smoke they have to sign a release that we/hospital are not liable. However, if they want to go outside, down the hill, and stand on the sidewalk while pushing IV poles, we have to do an incident report that they have taken hospital equipment off hospital property. Yes....lol....more paperwork! uuuggggg!!!!

Anyone ever expected to act out of their scope of practice???
i am a new nurse, still in my first year, i work on a tele floor. i usually have 7 pts, sometimes 9. as a new grad this is pretty overwhelming. where i work the lpn does everything the rn's do except atart blood, iv pushes, & hang some iv meds (cardiac gtt's), oh, and we take and write orders from dr's but we cant note them off. i am the type of person who always follows the rules, if there is a rule, i follow it, no exceptions. i recently had an rn who had charge over my pt's say to me, "anything you arent supposed to do, just do, i trust you, and i will sign off on it." although it is flattering to have the trust of people i work with, i just know i am never going to compromise myself when it comes to my scope of practice. that being said, i dont want to risk offending the rn that said that, i work with her all the time. any advice on how to handle this situation. i dont want to offend her, but i have to ask her to help with stuff i am not supposed to do. i always offer to help out, like if i need someone to give some pushes, i offer to give their po meds, i try not to be a burden, i am a team player, i dont want her to think i am just being lazy when i have to ask for help. any advice at all would be helpful! :uhoh3:

okay did I do
Congrats on passing!:yeah:Now the dreaded job search! I passed the NCLEX in September and I am just now starting my first job. Thankfully, where I am there is always an LPN job out there, I just decided to hold out for just the right position for me. I am a mom of 2 myself, so finding a job with just the right schedule for me did take me some time. (this is what i decided was best for us) I chose to do 12hr shifts,3 nights a week, i know, not usually a popular choice. But i can still be home when they get home from school, do homework & dinner then go to work and be home in time to drive them to school in the morning. I can sleep in the day, while they are gone, but still have the option to be there if they have something going on for school. This obviously is contingent on having someone home with them at night, thankfully my husband is, & although he will be sleeping alone three nights a week, he is willing to sacrifice for the extra paycheck! I wish you all the best in your search!

Stroke Question
Iam VERY new to nursing, but in class we were always told to approach from the unaffected side, so as not to startle the pt., but to place items on affected side so as to encourage use. Dont know if this will help any, but best of luck on th NCLEX!!!:)

I started crying as soon as i got home, i just knew there was no way i passed when it cut off at 85?'s, but i did. I think that it is so stressful, i think most people come out of there feeling bad, but most pass, right! Keep your chin up, i hope u dont have to wait long. I was lucky, i found out the next day, logged on the state board website & started crying again when i saw my name, lol. I am sure u did great!

Concerns with brand new nurses
the part that i personally found judgemental was where np said... "and then when you start orientating these nurses, the whole time im thinking, wow are you really gonna be responsible for my patients when im off?? ". i think that i have made it perfectly clear that my intent was also not to offend anyone with my comments either. i guess i just found it kind of odd that the comment came from someone relatively new to nursing herself. i hope that np will continue to post any and all ?'s that she wants too! i think that it would be really sad if people were afraid to post ?'s. this forum is so great, you get advice from nurses with many diffrent perspectives. i hope that u didnt take offense to any of my comments np, i may have sounded slightly harsh at times, but i know that i always gave encouraging feedback as well. (i hope that you noticed that too!) best warm & fuzzy wishes to all who took the time to weigh in on this touchy subject! :[anb]: :hrnsmlys:

Concerns with brand new nurses
It is unfortunate that this post has turned into an ugly thing. Nursepeace, i dont think that u intended for it to be like that, but unfortunately you did come off severly judgemental, kinda like a "nancy nurse", if you have ever heard the expression. I think that there will always be nurses that get into it for the paycheck, which it seems like you have ran into more than your fair share, but i have to think that the majority of us who do this job really care, right....So, on that note...i want to say...if you are offended by the replies that you have recived, just try not to be so judgemental yourself next time. The old "treat people like you want to be treated" comes to mind. I think if you read back over your first post you will see what i am talking about. You seem like a nice person, i think that if you had posted your ?'s a little diffrently, you might have got the kind of replies you were looking for. I took the time to look over the posts that you had put on here previously, and i can tell that you are a caring nurse, i just think that the way your post was worded was the problem. JMHO, of course. I wish you all the best. :lvan:

okay did I do
I also waited...but i do regret it. My reasoning for waiting was that i needed the time to study for the NCLEX. However, i ended up not studying at all and i procrastinated all the way up untill three days before the test! As you can imagine, i was freaking out. I crammed for two days, rested on the third, and by the grace of God, i passed! (with the minimum # of ?'s nonetheless) But my point is that i had psyched myself out, i graduated, i should have trusted myself, i should have had the confidince in myself to know that i would pass the NCLEX. I put off working because i didnt want to have to face the humilliation of telling my new employer that i didnt pass. I made it thru the hardest, longest year of my life, i should have had confidence going into test. Hindsights 20/20 though, right. If i had it to do over, i would have got a job, then tested.
