International Student Volunteer
I'm interested in traveling abroad as a nursing student, as well. My concern is paying for it. Many people have suggested that I try to create a fundraiser to raise the money...Would that work?

Medical trips to other countries?
I really want to do something like this. I've been looking at AYUDA (American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad).

New nurse's daughter just diagnosed with Type 1
I'm so happy that you took her to the doctor! During my freshman year of high school, my sister essentially diagnosed my juvenile diabetes. She was a senior in HS at the time -- I told her that I was peeing and had an awful thirst all the time. She told my mother to take me to see the doctor as soon as possible -- but my mom didn't really believe it. There was not a single diabetic in our family (that we know of). Well, thank goodness she finally followed my sister's advice! When I got to the emergency room, I was in the mid-600s! My sister is now in the process of applying to Yale, Columbia, Ohio State and some other prestigious graduate schools to become a Nurse practitioner. I'm very proud of her and I thank her for everything. :nuke:

Questions for those using a pump
I wore the insulin pump for a year but ultimately I decided to return to injections. I was so excited to go on the Medtronic MiniMed pump...but I became very disenchanted with the technology after a period of time. Often I would run out of insulin at inconvenient times (during a romantic dinner with my boyfriend...fun!) or I would accidentally rip out my pump site. However, I was most disappointed that it did not improve my hemoglobin a1c. In all, I contribute most of these problems to my own poor management. I have a friend who has been doing extremely well on the insulin pump -- and I'm so so happy for him. But I did not belive that the pump gave me any more freedom in my diabetes managment. Rather it seemed to be suffocating me. I feel so free with my injections -- they're not perfect, but they work best for me. I'm looking forward to going back to insulin pump therapy once the continuous glucose monitoring system is perfected and it is so tiny that no one can see it! That will be awesome

Diabetes and the Army
I'm a type 1 insulin-dependent diabetic. I also have hypothyroidism. Both illnesses require daily medication -- and my diabetes requires a great deal of attention. I know that the branches of the military will not accept anyone with an illness -- especially one like diabetes where I need insulin injections and I must worry about "lows" and "highs." However, I am very interested in joining the Army Nurse Corps after my graduation from Nursing School. I fear that they will not allow me to do so due to my diabetes. Does anyone know if they would still accept me as a nurse?

Any Diabetic nurses out there?
I'm not a nurse yet -- applying to Nursing School at Ohio State University in January. However, I was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes about three and a half years ago. I'm thankful for my diabetes for making me a stronger person and enhancing my desire to become a nurse. My only worry is that my juvenile diabetes (and hypothyroidism which comes along, too) will prevent me from pursuing my decision to join the Army Nurse Corps after graduation from Nursing School. I hope everything turns out for the best!

Not exactly in Nursing school, but will be in a few years.
Melissa, I know what it feels like to be in that boat! I'm a freshman at Ohio State University now. I made the decision in my junior year of high school that I wanted to be a nurse -- now I've even narrowed my future plans down more so. I've decided I want to join the Army Nurse Corps then I'd like to pursue my Doctor of Nursing Practice after that. I'm way ahead of a lot of people my age in future planning. I've only just gotten to college and I'm about two months away from applying to the Nursing School here. To start off, I think you should focus on colleges searches and do your research on which schools the best nursing programs. I wish I had started my college search earlier although I'm very happy at OSU. I wish you lots of luck!:nuke:

Would you join the Army Nurse Corps? Why or Why not?
I've not even been accepted into my college's Nursing School yet but I do have a strong interest in joining the Army as a nurse once I graduate. I would definitely consider it to have my education paid for and to gain that experience. My boyfriend has joined the Army to become a Ranger Medic and I find myself envious that he will be gaining more experience in a couple of months than I will in my years at school.

Indecisive: Army Nurse Corps
I have a similar interest in joining the Army Nurse Corps. However, I have not yet graduated Nursing School. What are the advantages/disadvantages of joining the Army after graduation? I think this is something I want to do...however, I agree, I need a lot more feedback before I make any kind of decision.

Military Nursing
Hi, I'm currently a pre-nursing student at Ohio State University. I have a boyfriend serving in the Army. I've always had an interest in military nursing but I'm not sure how to go about it. I was considering joining Army ROTC here at college...then finishing my BSN (if I get accepted into the Nursing Program) and joining the Army Nurse Corps. Does anyone have any experiences to share? Or maybe advice? I'm very curious about military nursing. Any military nurses out there? Please help! :nuke:
