I have done a considerable amount of substituting in schools this past year. School nursing IS nursing. When there is an emergency to handle, can you call a resident, respiratory or your manager? Nope....it's you and you alone. Only a NURSE could handle that! Like the above posters mentioned, you have 100's of children in your care. I love, love, love school nursing. Thing about it is, we don't get report as to what is coming thru the door -- it's being ready for anything at a moment's notice and somehow, - we are ready:) Enjoy your family and your career:)

I had heard a lot of negatives from sooo many people about how "impossible" it is to get into NCC, but you have been really encouraging and supportive. I'm flying high - but of course, the nerves are getting a little rattled. But - I'm ready for the challenge and I'm so honored to be able to take it. Karenanda, Congrats to you as well. I've heard that the interview process isn't a big deal, but don't quote me on that:) I should be able to get more info from some of the people I work with that have gone thru it, and I'll pass it along. I'm excited and nervous as well, but ready to get started. Congrats again!!

Hi all, Today I got my acceptance letter for NCC's nursing program. I'm sooo happy, excited and, of course, a little nervous, but I've waited 1/2 lifetime for this opportunity. Thanks to everyone that gave me encouragement and support along the way at allnurses. Good luck and best wishes to all those that will apply or that are waiting to hear. Karenanda, Congrats with your knock-out GPA! They didn't give specifics at the meeting as to what classes needed to be done prior to acceptance except of course for the obvious ones (math, eng, A&P1, etc). I don't know what you would call them, but I think of them as the basic pre-reqs. But, they did say that the more courses you had already taken, the better your chances of acceptance, and the highest GPAs with the most courses taken I guess "win":) Sounds to me like you are doing more than o.k. GOOD LUCK!

Hi Suzi4, Thanks for joining to chat with me! Waiting and applying is such a tough process and its nicer to have people to talk with that are going thru the same nerve wracking experience! You have a terrific GPA as well, and I wish you lots of luck getting in! There seems to be rumors abound at NCC about what GPA gets you in, but in the end, it's not up to us candidates! It's between the mailman and the NCC administration:) I don't like to come off sounding like a know-it-all, but I did attend the Nursing session given by the Nursing Dept chair and it was stated that the more pre-reqs done, the greater the chances of admission. Granted of course, that the GPA is competitive. Honestly, it's not hard to have a 3.8/4.0 with only 4 classes done. Nonetheless, I wish all of us with nursing in our hearts equal chances of getting in! Good luck to you and I'm glad you joined - I like to chat!:)

I'm with you. I have 2 children at home and there is NO WAY I'm bringing anything home to them that I have the power to control. Shame on the nurses being so careless. I work the night shift -- yes, there are times I am soooo tired I don't want to gown up, put on a mask or get another box if we're out -- double glove, etc. BUT it's my responsibility to myself, my family and the other patients I care for to not be an idiot. 'Nuff said!

Allimarie, I know this is an old post, but you mentioned classmates with 3.6ish GPA's. Were these GPA's accepted for the September or January class at NCC? I just applied for January. Thanks!

Hi, I got my CNA during my pre-reqs. I called 2 local hospitals and asked for the hiring criteria for CNA's (or PCA's). Both hospitals said that you had to have either your state issued CNA or have completed a semester of clinicals. To be honest, I got the impression they preferred the clinical completion over the state CNA. If you have a hospital/facility that you know you're interested in, call them and ask what their requirements are. The hospital I work at doesn't require the CNA cert. if you have your clinicals done. There is a quick course that you go thru on-site at the hospital prior to hiring (vitals, accuchecks, etc.). Once you pass, they then hire you. Good luck.

Hi, all, I applied to Nassau Community College today for the Spring 2010 semester. I understand that the Spring class is much smaller than the Fall semester. Would anyone mind sharing -- I applied with a 3.75 and all pre-reqs done. Anyone out there get in to the January class in the past with a comparable GPA? I understand that it's all according to the pool of GPA's they receive - 4.0's first, but I'm looking for a glimmer of hope. Thanks!

Go for it! I'm 46 (female, though) and went back to school to start pre-reqs when my youngest son started kindergarten. Prior to my children, I worked in NYC for many years as an "executive assistant" and also at one point a "legal secretary". Got to commute, dress up uncomfortably, and put on a "corporate face" which ALWAYS went against who I am. I always felt like I was being someone I wasn't. I have been so fortunate to be able to have this second chance. Nursing school/college was never an option when I was younger - I came from a large family and college was for "boys" -- UGH!! Enough of my baggage, but go for it! My sister put herself thru undergrad/and law school at night while working full time. I'm worried that she never seems truly happy and/or satisfied with her career. Currently, I'm working as a nursing assistant in a wonderful hospital while waiting to get accepted to nursing school. Yes, there is a lot of "butt wiping", but I'd rather wipe the butt of someone in need, than kiss the butt of someone rather wealthy and uppity! I'm glad I listened to my heart -- I finally feel like I'm home.

oldcatlady, Thanks for your kind words. It is awesome to be able to do this. I'm not sure if I would use the word "awesome" my first day at NCC, when I was 42 sitting in Sociology surrounded by 18 years olds that thought I was either the teacher or somone's mother making sure they showed up at class! It's been a great trip, though, and I'm very thankful to my husband and boys for their love and support thru all of this. Thanks for all of the back-and-forth notes, too. I'm so happy you got into Farmingdale. I'm keeping my fingers, toes and eyelids crossed that you get into NCC as well. Good for you, doing what you want now .....believe me, it's the way to go!

I'm so glad to have this place to go and post! I haven't told any relatives, friends, etc. (except for my husband and my sister that I've applied. I don't want to share my disappointment if I don't make it this round. I don't think anyone else would understand the anticipation, excitement and worry that I'm going thru -- except, of course, other's that are going thru it as well. I guess it's so hard to wait, because I've wanted this all my life, but never had the opportunity to even attempt it. I'm from a large family, so college was not even an option. My workplace provided tuition reimbursement, but only towards a business degree. After working in NYC for 17 1/2 years (at 2 mostly terrible) jobs, I'm getting my chance to do WHAT I WANT TO DO! I'm at the point of my life where I'm married and have 2 great boys. My mom died suddenly when my first child was 5 months old. I had my dad fall apart and lean on me (a very long story), then I found out I was expecting another baby when my first was 6 months old................the past years have been bittersweet, good, and crazy. I feel like I've always done what everyone else wanted me to do. Deep down inside I always hoped the day would come when I could chase my dream of becoming a nurse. To be honest, I'm humbled just to be able to apply. I never thought I'd get this far. I guess now that I've got all that out, I can wait a few more days. Thanks for listening........even if you just read the 1st sentence and hit "delete". Good luck to us all -- from my mouth to God's ears.

I called again today (I hadn't read your post yet) and they said "by the end of this month". This is really, really difficult to wait. I just feel like everything is on hold. I know I should be more mature about it, but the curiosity is getting the best of me. I keep wondering what the application pool is like in regards to GPA's........are there tons of 4.0's, etc. I'm not a 4.0, but have a very decent GPA. I'm taking A&P 2 now, and I only have micro left. Luckily, the rest of my pre-reqs are done. I just wish I knew where I stood in regards to getting in!!!! Ugh! Hopefully, I'll be able to post a bunch of smiley faces in a couple of weeks along with the rest of us that have worked hard and waited long.

oldcatlady, Hi, according to NCC they go out middle to end of April. Of course, I've been checking/double checking everyday! Not fun to wait.

These are all too funny.......I thought I was the only one thinking/almost doing all of these things! Especially the checking the school's nursing website. I did the scrubs thing along time ago.....:) I checked my transcript profile via our school's online program to see when my grades were looked at...I'm slowly coming undone! Good luck to all of us.

Glad you posted....no you're not alone! I'm so preoccupied with getting the mail lately! I've been told responses for my school come out mid to end of April. Good luck to you!

Sorry to hear your mom wasn't home to share your good news. It's such great news and I'm so glad you shared it with us! I know you'll be having a happy weekend! Like I said, my brother loves Farmingdale. He said the professors are really terrific and supportive of the students. Getting a seat in a nursing program today is like gold!Congratulations again!!!!!!

Old Cat Lady, When you've got news that INCREDIBLY GREAT TO SHARE, glad you told us no matter what the thread title is!!!! My brother is in Farmindale's RN program and he absolutely loves it!!!! He is bugging me to apply there as well. If I don't get into NCC, I will apply the next time Farmingdale is taking applications. CONGRATULATIONS AND THE VERY BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!:yeah:

Wow, there is so much emotion involved in this topic. I don't want to dismiss the seriousness of it. But I believe a little humor goes along way. I also believe it's best to look on the bright side of things. It could have been worse. She's not asking for a volunteer so she can practice administering an enema. (Sorry, I mean no disrespect to all of the posters above, just thought we all could use a little smile!)

It's hard to say. I've never gotten any helpful info from them in regards to chances of getting in, etc. I guess it all depends on your cc. Best of luck to you.
