  1. hi, not sure if this will help - but i work as a clinical audit nurse and as such report to the clinical risk manager and the director of nursing. my job is non clinical in that i don't deal directly with patients but do have to do extensive chart reviews and policy review. the information i use is gathered both from internal it systems and the financial / admin side of the hospital and also directly from medical staff. the hospital in which i work is around 300 beds acute med surgical with an ed and we see over 41k pts per year so the reports i write can involve up to that many cases but usually am dealing with specific incidents and or groups of patients in the hundreds. the biggest challenge in the job is getting information from hospital specific it systems into excel (of which we are also still using the 2003 version) as there is not an easy way to export information from multiple systems to cover what is required. assistance from the it department is often restrictive as describing what is required in a report from a clinical perspective to an it specilist does not always go too well. very brief answer, and hope it helps, david.
  2. Hi, I forgot to mention, and to clarify what was said re registration by the previous post - Nursing Registration in Australia is going to be done under a new National system from July this year so at present you need to apply for Rego in each state but after July under the new national system once rego'ed you will be able to work anywhere in Aus. This will be great for travellers. Thanks.:)
  3. Well, when I said 'people' I was grossly generalising - so sorry for that. I would not be able to back up that part of my claim anyway as Queensland is the fastest growing area in Australia with more people moving from NSW and VIC to there than any other part of Oz. So my point fails because the 'people' living in Queensland are made up of a large number of immigrants from the other states. You would have to wonder however why so many people are moving there after having lived down south. :)
  4. Yes you may be told how many to give but you must be able to check that order in itself is correct. You are the one about to give a medication and are responsible for your actions as a nurse. Dont ever accept an order as being correct.
  5. If you want to work in Perth WA then look at some of the Private Hospitals - Just to plug the one I am at look up SJOG Murdoch. You will find links on the website to information re the hospitals Grad program and as long as you can get WA nursing registration you would be eligble to apply. The organisation has two hospitals in perth (Subiaco and Murdoch) and both are well respected large private hospitals.
  6. Hi Just make sure you understand the conditions of a work visa, the 457 work visa has very specific requirements regarding the amount of work that you do and what hours of work be given to you by the employer, if for instance you do not work enough hours to maintain a full time capacity because you are on short shifts or take unpaid extra time off then you can quickly be in breech of the visa and be threatened with deportation. There have been cases where nurses on the 457 visa become pregnant or sick and unable to work enough hours over the year time frame and becoming in breech of the visa, lose there right to work and then must return home. On a different note I would look at working in Queensland over NSW / Vic - much better lifestyle / weather / people / and specifically look at the large public hospitals if you are after experience and variety. Regonal towns such as Toowoomba also have some good hospitals and are always willing to employ overseas RN's. I can give you contacts there if you want.
  7. Yep I guess the person doing the talking was a gen Y. No manners or consideration for anyone else, what abbout the risk of radio interference to medical equipment?? Telemetry, IV pumps etc can be effected by mobiles. Most ICU's have a sign asking for phones to be turned off before entry and I guess Gen Y's think they are as important as the Doctor's who don't bother to comply either.
  8. WOW can't believe someone would write this - Turning a friend/colleague in is even worse than cheating. Obviously someone else who needs to grow up and relaise the implications of what they are saying. PS I have been teaching Medication calculations at University for over two years and we make our students get 100% - some people do struggle but i would rather spend the time and help them to work out what they are doing than to make it easy and have more mistakes made in practice.
  9. Let the person cheat - if they are that silly (could use a worse word) then when they kill someone they will work it out. They obviously don't realise that the task of administering drugs requires a high level of competence.
  10. Does your prac have to be specifically Paediatric based or are you looking for general ward experience? If you only need General ward experience try SJOG - Murdoch or Subiaco for a place. I know Murdoch has a Scotish Student doing prac there, but it has limited peadiatrics. Contact either of these hospitals via www.sjog.org.au and ask for the undergraduate coordinator. Hope this helps.
