Future for specializing in infertility and IVF?
So weird that this topic came up. I was reading on Sunday and started thinking about possibilities, my life's purpose, what would be fulfilling...yadda, yadda, yadda. And I would love to work in reproductive endocrinology as well. I will be starting school in May to become a CNM and WHNP, my school has the dual specialty thing. Anyways, I think it would be just great to work with a full spectrum of women to plan families. This is sort of a personal mission as well. I have had years of trouble trying to conceive and I'm relatively young. And when I tested positive two years ago, made my doc appt, got there and there was nothing. So this whole area really speaks to me. At first I was a little reluctant to become a CNM, I didn't know if all the beautiful babies being born would bother me, but I've been so happy since volunteering in the labor/del area of the hospital. I can't wait to start catching babies. Also, I understand about the whole being nervous after an IVF procedure. If in the event I have to do it to have my babies, I'm taking every precaution I can. Bells and whistles all the way!! I don't know if it is foolish or what but I would still love to have a natural birth with a midwife. And I found some really good encouraging info, check out this facility started by a midwife in NJ... http://www.childbirthcenter.net/

Thanks for the updates Tempest621, Sam1985 and caffreak... for those of us who were not able to be there. You mentioned they gave you a copy of our proposed schedules. How many days/hours per day will we actually be in classroom?

hey all, I was denied for private loans through sallie and Citi, actually sallie said i could get a co-signer, but I don't think anyone would be willing to do that for me....and they all have horrible credit. I will try wells, but it doesn't look too good right now. I'm a bit discouraged by this. I've been applying for scholarships like crazy but most of them don't amount to more than a few thousand and many of them want you to be a nursing student already. Has anyone else found any good programs? Pleasssssse help!

Process for COT in the Air Force
I agree with NursePamela, get a job in the meantime, because things may be..........delayed (to say the least) in January. Don't tell the employer until the last minute, they are usually receptive about you wanting to go military, as long as you give two weeks notice.

I'm in the same situation as you, I have a bachelors in another field... I have contacted several recruiters. You can go enlisted if you are an RN without a BSN. In order to do nurse corp, and be an officer, you have to have a BSN. There is no way around this, according to four recruiters. I'm going to do an accelerated program at Columbia. I was told once I finish the BSN portion (1 year) I could join up and have them pay for the masters portion. You may want to look into an accelerated program, if you have the time. Otherwise, they will have you sign up as enlisted and you can APPLY for your officer commission once you earn your BSN, but combining this with active duty will be challenging, depending on your assignments. Another option is to go reserves while in school. Not rotc because they won't give you a scholarship while in school because u already have a bachelors. Best bet is to contact a recruiter from reserves and active in your area and see what options they give you. Hope this helps, because I know I was lost about my options til recently.

As far as I know, Midwives are much more prominent in rural areas. I live in Charlotte currently and I see a Midwife and I know others that do as well. Jose told me that NY is not a great market bc people prefer OB/GYN. Overall, they have peaks and valleys historically. Thats why I like the dual aspect of the program with women's health, many more options in terms of where you want to settle down. I think its on the rise though, because people are discovering a birthing center is more cost effective than a hospital and Midwives don't come with the hefty price tags that docs do for a hospital. I am interested in anyone else's take on it...

You can take Micro with Univ of Phoenix, Environmental Micro, they have one starting at the end of the month I believe. Thats the one I plan to take. Send me a message if you want the contact number for the advisor. Otherwise, Univ of Rochester might have an online one.

Its comforting to know I'm not the only person freaking out about my finances. So thanks to all of your for sharing your stories. I'm trying to look at this as an investment in my future and it will allow me to live my dream. Its disheartening to see that so many qualified people may forgo the opportunity because of the lack of funds, myself included! I don't mind taking out loans... but I know many banks are cutting back on the loans they provide. I know Columbia said they have trusted sources, but everyone is tightening the strains these days.

Hey there, I'm happy to say I got my acceptance yesterday, congrats to those of you who did and I'm praying for those of you who have not heard :) I'm looking forward to a long, stressful, rewarding journey with everyone. Is anyone else here entering the program to become a CNM, I'm doing that in combo with women's health nurse practitioner. I'm also stressing about how I'm gonna be able to pay for it all. I did a bad thing and did not submit my fafsa yet. Tomorrow, definitely!

A & P 1 Fall 2008
I took nutrition this summer, online. Right now I'm taking Developmental Psych and Sociology. I'm about to sign up for A&PI w/ University of Phoenix (ugghhhh super expensive). But, I don't have any other option if i will start my BSN next fall.... There were absolutely no open A&P classes (online) in the entire state of NC for this fall. I'm taking it all in stride. hahaha
