  1. I talked to Army Health recruiter today. I'm an FNP (would be a 66p), the Army has 7 slots for this fiscal year two are already filled. The recuriter was a biochemist by trade and didn't really know all that much about nursing in the Army. Does anyone know how the Army uses FNPs (66p) Are they deployed down range in CSH's or are they just used in primary care on posts? or somewhere in between?
  2. I just finished taken the ANCC FNP exam and thought I owed to the community what my impressions of the exam were. I really felt that I was under prepared and had no idea when I hit submit on the exam if I passed or not. I did pass. I went to Fitz live course, listed to her CD's 2-3 times, went through her review book, did all the question in the hollier and some questions in the liek. Probably put in a solid 100-120 hours of study for the exam. Here is what I remeber from the exam 5-10 question on ethics, 5-10 on role of NP, 5-10 on research. The rest was a hodge-podge of information that was all over the place. It seemed to me that questions such as you have a patient with (insert symptom) what is the best way to commnicate with them or what would you do with them; i.e.; refer, give meds, do nothing, montior, order labs..etc
  3. thanks for taking the time to read through and edit this
  4. hey all, this is my 3rd edition of this and i am sicking of looking at it, i just need some outside eyes to tell me what i am missing or areas i can expound upon, i am not worried about the apa formatting yet just worried about content. please be rough! i want to have the best possible goals statement. criteria is listed below and below that is what i wrote... thanks!!!!! - essay (statement of goals) (double-spaced, 1500 word maximum, using apa guidelines) describing: - your academic expectations of the program. - how the dnp will affect your future career. - the experiences that you feel have best prepared you for doctoral study (e.g., clinical, educational, or leadership experiences). - a clinical problem or area of interest in which you might be interested in developing your final project. - what are the most difficult issues are that you anticipate while in the dnp program and you plan to handle them? i'm applying for the doctorate of nursing practice (dnp) program. my expectations when i'm accepted is that the university of -------- of nursing prepares me to be an advance care practitioner in line with the state standards of doctoral prepared nurse practitioners. i expect that the staff and faculty be there when i need help understanding complex concepts in school. i also expect the faculty and staff to mentor and groom me into a dnp. i expect that through hard work from myself and the mentoring of the faculty, in both the clinical setting and the classroom setting will lead me to be the best nurse practitioner i can be. in-turn this will let me take care of my patients with the latest and best evidence based practices (ebp) i will obtain the degree of doctorate of nursing practice(dnp) because this will enable me to better advocate for my patient population by using ebp. i know i have been fortunate in my life and by obtaining a dnp this will let me at least attempt to give back to my local community throughout my lifetime . i would like to volunteer my education and skill set to those that don't have the means to pay for healthcare and to meet them in their communities. giving back to society is an important life-long goal of mine. the university of ------ doctorate of nursing practice program will allow me give back to society. i also believe that by obtaining a doctorate level education in my career, it will force other professions doctoral prepared disciplines to see me and dnp's as peers i think it is important that the american association of colleges of nursing stick to the 2015 deadline of entry level for practitioners from msn to dnp. advocating for the patient is the number one goal of the nursing. i do this day in and day out as a floor nurse at ------ wanting to better advocate for the patient is just a natural progression. i feel that working as a floor nurse has prepared me to have a good foundation ok knowledge that will let me hit the ground running in the bsn to dnp program. among other leadership experiences i served for almost eight years in the united states air force. i left the united states air force because i wanted to help people instead of trying to kill them. i was honorably discharged in 2005. i thought there is no better profession than nursing to accomplish my goal of helping people. i have a deep respect for the united states armed forces and i owe much of where i am right now to the military. the military instilled work ethic, confidence and leadership into me. once i was discharged i started nursing school at the university of north florida (unf). the university of north florida afforded me with ample leadership opportunities. my peers at that program voted me into being the president of the student nursing association. in this position i attended and was a delegate on the floor at florida student nurses association state convention (daytona beach, florida 2009). i also attended two national student nurse association conventions as a delegate (dallas, texas 2008 and nashville, tennessee 2009). i had the opportunity to speak on the floor at the house of delegates at both national conventions. i was also selected to join sigma theta tau which i very eagerly accepted and i am still a member. i have an affinity towards knowledge that surrounds problems with the heart. i think that the heart is an amazing organ, it helps sustain life and if it is not pumping it takes life away. the reason i have such affinity towards hearts, is that myocardial infarctions run in the men in my family, the more i know about the heart the more i can do to prevent an mi from happening to myself and those that are under my care. i would like my final project to have something to do with heart health. i will complete my final project and go straight through to the dnp with out opting out. i see no difficulties in completing the dnp. i want to earn the dnp degree and i will sacrifice to do so.
  5. If you want to be a Nurse, the fastest way is to go to school and take on loans. I was Air Force for 8 years and had to leave the service to get the classes I needed to become a Nurse, working 50-60 hours a week is not conducive to Nursing School at all. There are programs that the Air Force offer to enlisted to become a Nurse, but they are highly competitive, and you have to have the pre-reqs for Nursing school done, and be accepted into a Nursing school... I could never find the time to get the classes and most colleges that were near did not offer the pre-reqs for nursing. I am an RN BSN now and I have been shopping Services ( Navy and Air Force mainly) Air Force is better quality of life of all the branches BAR NONE ask any military person. When I was going through school I know the Navy offers I believe it is up to a 3 year scholarship ( 1000 dollars a month) and like 10,000 dollars cash if you sign the dotted line. The Air Force never really came to my college. If you want to be a RN don't go enlisted at all, your wasting your time. Go to school then go military. The signon bonus for the navy, Air Force and the Army is 30,000 dollars ( I believe) for a 4 year commitment. There are various other sign on bonuses for varying lengths and amounts, and I want to say that one is for 6 years and 20,000 cash and up to like 100,000 student loan repayment... can't beat it spoon! hope this helps
  6. I picked the Asthma answer as well, I am like how do I know what the kid ate? It would of been better stated if the answer said something to the effect of has the kid ate anything recently... another question in the q-bank had me scratching my head as to why the answers were question The fire alarm is ringing at a nursing facility arrange the following actions from the most important to the least important Pull the fire alarm move clients away from the fire locate all the residents close all the fire proof doors answer: Move clients away pull the fire alarm close fire proof doors locate all the residents .. K I put pull the fire alarm as last in priority, cause didnt the question root say the fire alarm was already ringing?.. there test taking strategy says go back to the root... you know you have spent to much time studying when you use their own strategies against them on their own questions... lol I take my test in 12 hours! pull the fire alarm

  8. I have filled out my package for the Air Force, I go to MEPS next week, should pass no problem. However my recruiter is putting my package together for a board that does not have a date yet and also he has no COT dates for when I graduate. I graduate August 3 2009. My recruiter tells me that if the COT dates are set at the beginning of October I won't be able to go until January 2010, because he won't have enough time to process the paper work? Is that normal? He is just like just get a job as a nurse in the civilian world? What job will hire me as a GN and oh by the way I will be quitting in January to go to the Air Force. My question in a Nutshell how long does it take from the time of Graduation to get My paperwork ready for COT (assuming I have had my Chief Nurse interview, passed MEPS, the board says ok....etc)? I think two months is plenty of time? My recruiter also tells me I won't get Commission until I pass the NCLEX. Do I start getting paid as an 01E (yes, prior enlisted) on my date of Commission? When do I find out where I will be stationed? Is it once I pass the NCLEX, or once the board approves my package? When is the cut-off for selection of FY09 assignments and FY10 assignments? I would really like to get pick-up for overseas and I see that if I am selecting from the FY09 pool my chances are pretty slim to go overseas.. How is COT compared to basic training? Thanks Shane
  9. AEF = Aero Epeditionary Force, It is hard to explain with out confusing you and me. It basically tries to put stablility into forecasting your deployments. I'm not sure how they are running it now but when I was in the AF (been out 3 years now) every 18-24 months you would be in your window that lasts for 3 months and if they need you to deploy, you will. I want to say for a max of 179 days. Deploy doesn't necessarily mean to a war zone, but you can go to Iraq or Afghanistan. Maybe I am mistaken on the times but I think I am pretty close. bottom line if you join the military you will deploy or be sent TDY
  10. I can't say anything about Nursing in the Air Force, But I can tell you about the AF. Air Force treat their people the best. You will deploy, they try to make it predictable by assigning you to an AEF, but emergencies do pop up. Just because you are in your deployment window does not mean you will go to Iraq. I have been deployed to Croatia, Italy, and Kuwait during my AEF windows. I have never been to Iraq. I am going back into the AF as a Nurse if that tells you anything.
  11. No boot camp for anyone that is a Nurse going in. It is more of this what the misson is and this what an officer does... and of course some PT tests
  12. I am about a year out of graduating with my BSN, and I am going into either the AF or Navy. I have already started the application process, and I am scheduled to go to MEPS in the next few weeks. I was just wondering what programs the Air Force or Navy offers its Nurses to pursue a Masters or even a PHD level education. I have searched and searched and I have found nothing and the Air Force Health Professions recruiter seems clueless. I have also talked to the Navy recruiter and he seems a little bit more knowledgeable. I forget the acronym he used for the program but it was something along the lines of going to school was your job once you get picked up for the program. I am prior service 8 years in the AF, but am open to the Navy as well. I would like to go into the branch that has the best education benefits. I figurethe military will use me so I have to use them right? Thanks
