  1. Very good article I also at 54 workout and meal prep and totally agree with the "temptations" and the mocking about what you eat. I get a lot of Barb won't eat that she is eating her trees or grass today. I have a sweet tooth and find it hard when you have had a stressful day ( I work in a heart cath lab) it's very hard not to grab that piece or two of chocolate in the break room! Thanks for the inspiration!
  2. At 40 I went back to school from being a Medical assistant for 25 yrs and got an associate RN degree. I have been an Rn for 8 years and worked my way from med surg to now circulating in a diagnostic cath lab. Now at 54 I would like to move to another state and do not want to go back to school at 54. I started to take pre classes and had to take statistics and med ethics and also chemistry to even start my degree. I was spending every day off and week end trying to figure out on line statistics and how to write a Thesis in APA format for med ethics. I was getting an A in both classes and just quit this week b/c I couldn't take the stress anymore. It actually was affecting my thinking at work because I was so stressed from school! I would rather focus on CME's that apply to my craft or maybe obtain my CCRN than write a Thesis in APA format whatever that means! I do not want management I just want to care for the patient. Hopefully I will obtain a job with my move without having to get my BSN. We have a lot of new young nurses at our hospital and I still believe that experience makes the difference not the degree!
  3. NedRN we live about an hour from any larger hospitals and I have thought about trying to do per diem assignments thanks for the comments!
  4. I am thinking about becoming a travel nurse and not sure where to begin. Ive been in the medical field for 30 yrs, the last 6 being an RN. I work in a rural hospital in Ohio, starting with Med-surg, worked in pre/post endoscopy, and helped start up Diagnostic only Cath lab working pre/post and occasionally circulating and ICU. Our hospital is only a 50 bed facility and truthfully our ICU is very limited as most critical patients are shipped to much bigger sister hospital. My concerns are how to get started, and do I have enough experience to land some assignments. Any suggestions. My husband wants to retire and explore different places around the country with me. I am 52 and in great physical shape so feel I can handle long hours and traveling and eventually will settle somewhere that we discover we love. Any suggestions, just really scared to take the plunge, is there a way to see if this is something I can do? My husband hates the winter weather and would uproot us tomorrow if we could!
  5. The book invasive Cardiology a manual for cath lab personnel is a great source and it is written by RN's. It comes with CEU of 32 and two booklets to turn in your answers to questions throughout the book. I too am new to a cardiac cath lab and found this very helpful. Also joing Cathlab digest for free and this is very helpful.
  6. Why was the pt incubated?
  7. How are you doing and how long have you been open?
  8. I hear ya!, I'm just trying to get administration to get it!
  9. No the RNs are not going to scrub just circulate, monitor and pre and post cath nursing, thanks for your input and we will be "learning "at the bigger sister hospital. Thanks a bunch!
  10. Ok thanks for the input definitely have some thinking to do!
  11. We are mid west, and no cardiovascular team.
  12. We are going to larger sister Hosp for training once weekly but were told that's gonna stop, as far as complications, no vascular surgeon and any complications would be life flighted to sister Hosp takes 15 - 20 min....do you see my concerns? Only doing 4-6 "low risk" caths a week. I will ck out that site, thanks.
  13. Hey everyone need some advise, I'm from a small town that just opened a diagnostic only cardiac cath lab. 3 nurses and 1 radiology tech trained to work there by just shadowing and eventually working at a bigger hospital 1-2 times a week for 4 months. We realized right away that we need way more training but administration isn't listening, we opened without any hitches but we all want some kind of more training and education.....any idea's if there are any online training or something we can do to get more training?? We are suppose to eventually learn each others jobs. I would appreciate any input. Thanks
  14. I am a new nurse started May, I work full time 7p-7a on med surg floor. I did not get much orientation before I was turned loose and I was scared to death. I'm sleeping ok but I would get report every work night and then go straight to the bathroom and have diarrhea! Here's the thing you have to realize at some point you will make a mistake, all nurses do, hopefully you won't make a fatal error but each "little" mistake you make will give you what we call experience and experience is only achieved with time. Learn every single day you are there, if you don't know how to do something find someone and ask questions, ask questions ask questions, if someone won't help you find someone that will. Fortunately where I work the nurses all team up together to help who ever is struggling that night. Know that you will have good nights and bad nights and you can't predict when they are! There is so much that nursing school does not teach you, for example I just found out that if you have a dying patient and its near the end if you move them you may hurry the dying process, luckily I was with a nurse who let me know before I turned the pt but I never knew that. Anyway here is a little prayer that I say everytime I am walking into work and I feel it helps me know that I at least ask the higher up for help Oh God, Give me grace for this day, Not for a lifetime, nor for next week nor for tomorrow, just for this day. Direct my thoughts and bless them, direct my work and bless it, direct my hands and bless them , direct the things I say and give it blessing, direct and bless everything I think, speak and do so that for this day just this one day I have the gift of grace with Your presence. Good Luck (sorry so long)
