  1. You are not over-reacting, one of my pet peeves among my colleagues is carelessness. It does not matter what kind of patch it is, whether it is harmful or not. This must be discarded immediately in appropriate container and not left on the table or elsewhere. Now that I am a nurse, I noticed that so many nurses are either too busy or just neglectful or could care less to take the time to "clean up" oblivious to the fact that it could be picked up by a child and put it in his mouth. Taking the time to dispose of the like things. Safety awareness is one of our responsibilities, among other things.
  2. I used to suffer migraines few years ago. When I got the migraine I could not do anything until I met a physician who practiced alternative medicine. To make the story short, he put me on a strict vegetarian diet. Not only my problems with migraines disappear, my asthma, hypertension, and diabetes (late onset) were gone. Many people who I know do not believe in Alternative Medicine but whatever works for me that's what I follow. It cost me because health insurance did not cover, but it is all worth it because I saved, money over the years, not buying medicines. Eating vegetables and fruits did it for me.
  3. Have you considered removing the tats with laser?
  4. I received my licence for RN in 1992. Did not work as a nurse until 2002. I started working in a nursing home with starting salary of $49,920.00. That was not bad for someone just starting. After one year left nursing home to work in an acute nursing facility, with starting salary of $58,240.00. After 6 months I am now earning $65,520.00, adding to that the time differential when I work on the second shift and every other weekend. I have a BSMT and ADN with extensive knowledge in Microbiology and Immunology. I would rather be in the 3rd category (salary scale) because of the stress and nonstop workflow, not able sometimes to stop for coffee breaks and lunch breaks.
  5. I think that disrespect is one of the factors to feel that way. I am burned out because I find that higher ups just keep adding more responsibilities, I FEEL THEY DO NOT CARE AS LONG AS YOU GET THE WORK DONE, such as doing phlebotomy, doing what a respiratory therapist do, wound care, passing trays!, starting IVs. These tasks take me away from my patient care. I am still working as a nurse because I chose this profession, to be a caregiver. #1) I complained about doing phlebotomy, starting January 1st, our unit will have a phlebotomist drawing blood for stats and timed tests. One less task that involves time. #2) I also complained about not enough equipment to use, thermometers, blood pressure cuffs that do not work, pulse ox. #3) Docs handwriting that sometimes take 5 nurses to interpret. WHAT A WASTE OF OUR TIME!!!
  6. 1. I have been a nurse for two years. 2. Acute Care nursing 3. Bristol, Pennsylvania 19007 4. BSMT, RN 5. I would like to see nurses wear "clean and neat shoes and uniform", whether it is scrub or standard white uniform. I want to be distinguished as professional caregiver. Patients do notice your personal appearance. At work, we are required to wear scrubs that look professional. As for myself, scrubs with conservative designs, I will wear. I could wear single colored-pants, dress shirt plain or printed with a lab jacket. I have 6 pairs of white shoes that I rotate so that they are always clean when I wear them. 6. I do not think that we should return to wearing the standard uniform. As I have noted above, scrubs or whites are fine, one thing i want to stress is to be clean and neat from head to toe when reporting to work. Your personal appearance says much about you. Patients feel safer, too.
  7. I am a Registered Nurse and I find it difficult to complete all my tasks because of the things added to my tasks, that should be done by other dept. For example, phlebotomy, it is supposed to be done by CNAs who were trained during orientation. Many times they have no time to draw the blood. Some do not have enough experience, patients are stuck several times until they get the blood. Patients' are bruised so badly, nobody seems to care. So, many times I end up doing them. This takes me away from doing my patient care. In my unit there is a great turnover of nurses. Few weeks ago I started looking for another place to work. I am still looking. I was a Medical Technologist for 36 years and 2 years ago I started my career in Nursing. I will stay doing Nursing, when I see a change. I do foresee any change soon. Many nurses on my unit don't like doing phlebotomy but do not complain because they think it is part of their job. they will draw blood one, two three hours late. Again, NO one cares.
  8. I am 63 years old. When one of my my co-workers found out how old I am she could not believe my age. She told everyone in the unit and they came to me looking at my face saying "you don't look your age". Anyway, I do not dye my hair which is black with few grey that's not noticeable. My skin looks good. I take care of myself: not smoking, not drinking alcohol, and I'm vegetarian. Now, When they ask me about my age I just give them smile and tell them "I'm old enough to take care of you." I have two boys ages 32 and 27. They both look like teenagers.
  9. I used to have violent migraines until 1998. I went to a physician (MD) who practices natural healing. I fast for three days, that was the cleansing phase, then gradually changed to semi-solid to solid totally vegetarian diet, meaning no animal products. I also suffered seasonal allergy, asthma, late onset diabetes and heart problem. Stopped all of my medications. I got rid of all of the problems. I also lost the weight. I feel great! more energy.
  10. Congratulations. You have completed your BSN. Do not worry about what others will be thinking or saying about you about you, those people have nothing better to do but distract you (they are losers!). Get experienced as a floor nurse. Be good at it and do not have a negative attitude. I work with many nurses who hate their jobs but who are still working as a nurse (that's their problem). Be successful. Learn as much as you can. Don't let anybody push you. Have confidence be proficient as you start your career. Do not associate yourself with nurses who hate their job but still hanging on. Associate with nurses with positive attitude. Be a leader and not a follower. Respect people around you and they will respect you. Nurses who will not respect you do not respect themselves. Focus your energy on your patients. They need you. Be a good nurse. With your BSN, and your experience as a floor nurse, you can further yourself by applying to management positions in the future. If you do well, your employment evaluation will be good on your resume. Be organized. That comes from experience. It may take time but being organized is important now and and in your future = you will be able to manage your assignments smoothly. Always ask questions when you are not sure. Best wishes and good luck to you. BE PROUD THAT YOU ARE A NURSE!!!
  11. I am a Registered Nurse and not recruited from the Philippines. With a BS in Medical Technology, returned to school to be a Nurse. There was already a shortage fifteen years ago and the hospital where I was working paid for my nursing education. I was born and raised in the Philippines. We were taught English since Kindergarten up to college. In college, we had to take a course in Voice and diction. It was a mandatory course for every college student. When I came to America, because of my accent, the first year was difficult. As time went by I began to understand them and they began to understand me. I still have my accent (that will never go away). I consider myself a good communicator and a good nurse. I know because my patients tell me so. The family of my patients are happy when they know I am assigned to take care of their Dad or Mom. I have been a nurse now for 18 months. I noticed that Filipino nurses are respected for their diligence, professionalism, and caring attitude. I think that our schools of nurses have prepared us to be a real professionals. I think that hospitals should continue to recruit nurses from foreign countries like the Phillipines = worth the time and money. They usually pick the good ones.
