  1. Gosh! I feel like I could have written your post myself! I too will be completing the pre-reqs in December and I too still have to write my goal statement! I hope to interview at some point in the winter!!
  2. I recently overheard a student say that Michigan will require a Bachelor degree in order to be a RN in the year 2013 and that an Associate degree after this date will not be eligible for the RN license. This is NOT a reliable source, but I was wondering if anyone has heard this or where I could find that information. I believe this student did not understand what they were saying and I believe this student gave false information. I thought I'd post the question here and see if anyone else has heard this or read this. Thanks!!
  3. I am still in the process of taking my prerequisites so that I can apply to the ABSN, but I LOVE reading these posts because it makes so excited to be where you guys are today! Anyway, after reading some of the recent posts on here, I think there may be some confusion on where Riverview Institute is located. Riverview Institute is not in the city of Riverview or downriver. It's actually in Detroit, not far from downtown Detroit. I used to work in downtown Detroit and the drive is really not that bad...I live in Troy. There is a map located on OU's nursing website. Congrats everyone for getting into the program!
  4. Hi ejcl68. I have been reading these posts and I was wondering if OU still has the rolling admissions. I still have to take A&P before I can apply, but when I went to the informational meeting (about 2 years ago now!) the advisor told us that OU practices rolling admissions. For example, if you interviewed for Jan 2011 but there were people with higher GPAs than you, but they still liked you as a candidate, they would move you to the next cohort of May 2011. Can you tell me if they are not doing that anymore? Do you just interview for one cohort and if you don't get it, that's it? I was under the impression that OU still had rolling admissions, but if I am wrong, can you please correct me? Congratulations for being accepted into the program! Thanks!!
  5. Jindos02 Did they give you any indication why you were not accepted? Did they mention grades? Also, are they still doing the rolling admissions or is it, you are in or you are out? I thought that if you didn't make the current program, they would put you in the next one. Your GPA sounds pretty good. I wonder if you can get some feedback so you would know if it was the GPA or something else.
  6. Wendy, I too was just like you. I have a finance degree, so it seemed like I needed to take a lot of gen ed classes as well. OU is very liberal when it comes to the gen ed classes for their 2nd degree students (i was told this at the informational meeting about a year and a half ago). I was pleasantly surprised at the classes that transferred for OU gen ed credits. I actually didn't have to take as many as I thought. I did have to take a language, since I never had one for my previous degree. The first thing you should do is apply to the school (directions are posted on OU's website) and then the 2nd degree adviser will mail you a Plan of Study which will list any remaining classes you have to take. Then, you just start attacking those classes!! :-) I am currently taking my prereqs right now.
  7. Lisa621 - Where are your actual classes held? Do they have classrooms at Riverview?
  8. I would like to know, what is the general opinion of accelerated nursing programs, particularly the second degree programs? My question my be bettered answered by current nurses. In your opinion, are the new nursing grads that graduated from an accelerated program just as knowledgeable as the new nurses that graduated from a two year traditional program? Do you feel that both new grads have the same skills and knowledge? Or, is there no difference in the type skills you see? I am taking the prerequisites for OU's second degree accelerated program, but I wonder what experienced nurses think of these types of programs. I thank you in advance for your thoughts
  9. Thank you for your response MInurse2b2010. I like your strategy on anatomy. Good luck with the program. I’m looking forward to getting where you are now!
  10. Hi MInurse2b2010 I saw your post and wanted to ask you a question - I too am taking my pre reqs at OCC for OU's accelerated 2nd degree program. Just wondering did you take Anatomy at OCC (i know you have to take AP I and II) or did you take BIO 121 at OU? I'd like to save as much $$ as I can, but it's one semester at OU vs two semesters at OCC. Just trying to get feed back as to the best way to take my pre reqs! Thank for your help
  11. I just met w/ an OCC counselor Monday on this very same question. The GPA is based on the General Education Requirements (it is listed on the Unofficial Worksheet Checklist) BIO 1570 or 2710 BIO 2630 BIO 2640 ENG 1510 ENG 2200 or 1520 Fine Arts/ Humanities HEA 1510 POL 1510 SOC 2510 PSY 2510 PHYS (from geneal ed list) The grades from those classes are used to calculate your GPA to get into the nursing program. Hope that helps!
  12. Thank you for the reply. I am not aware of any changes....yikes! I think I will have to e-mail Kristina to find out this information. Some of my pre-req grades are not that great either. I too was 18 when I took Bio 101 and Chem 101. Did you ever think that those grades would come back to haunt you years later? :-) I have a finance degree so I never thought the grades I got in my science classes would ever matter! Congrats on getting into the progam! I still have to take BIO 121, but I'm thinking of retaking BIO 111 since it was such a long time ago that I took that class. I don't want to feel lost in anatomy. Also, are you currently pregnant right now? I can't remember what you wrote in your last post, but that would make sense if you are going to have a one year old when you start the program. Congrats on that too. I too have thought about having another baby, but I'm so nervous about school. Sometimes I feel like I'm choosing...Nursing degree or another baby. Anyway, I'm sure you had similar feelings. But, I'm glad to see that you are doing it. Thank you and to malenurse for the heads up on the possible changes. I will try to get some information for myself ASAP. Steph
  13. I am still in the process of taking my pre-nursing courses for OU, but I will be in your shoes and it scares me too. I have a two year old and I am very nervous about being able to keep up with the demand of the 2nd degree program. I loved reading these posts because it gives me hope that I too can complete this degree even though I have a young child. I do have a question for you though, Lisa621... Once you had your interview w/ OU, how long do you have to wait until you actually can start the progam? What I want to know is, how many semesters are in between the interview and the actual start date of the progam they assign you to?
