Slight correction LVNs in california can hang normal saline with K+ in fact up to 60meqs.
  2. hello out there, I'm currently an LVN in california working in an acute care hospital, med-surg wing on nights I've been employed full-time for the past 9yrs, I started work there before I even graduated. I attended a college based nursing program 4semsters for 1500 clinical hours. I also have an AS degree all nursing pre-requisites. I passed my Nclex first time, computer shut off at 85, I'm IV therapy and phlebotomy certified. Here in California I can hang primary fluids and blood and blood products. Do the LPNs do the same thing in Arizona. We will be moving in 4wks so I'd really like to know where I stand. Thanks a bunch guys.:loveya:
  3. Hi, I,m an LVN living and working in northern California, and yes its in a hospital med-surg, 12hr nights. While its true the unions that represent RNs in California are trying to squeeze out LVNs the biggest trouble maker is CNA, Oh what do these letters stand for California Nurses Association, Who apparently don't recognise LVNs as nurses. However local hospitals around where I live have been hiring LVNs for all shifts and this includes full-part time with benefits. Taking away skills taught to LVNs is a waste of time because you will never remove that skill from the mind. Thanks for reading.
  4. Hi, Requirements here in Northern California are 4 semester LVN for most of the college based program, the same as the RN I think it was something like 1500 hrs Clinical hours. plus on top of that I already had my AS degree.
  5. Hello, In answer to your question, regardless of a dictionary's definition, If you follow a dress code ,if you are accountable to your state to maintain your licence, and have to pay for said licence, by society's definition you are a professional. Personally before I entered my 2yr college based LVN program I had already done all the prerequisites for RN this resulted in my AS degree, my thinking at the time was to go through all the levels (I had previously been a CNA). When I graduated in 1999 my plan was to do the bridge program to RN but at the time was so burnt out, with two degrees back to back. I went to work, but I did keep up my education, although 3 of my 5 children were still at home. I've done the RN bridge I added patho, to my educational credits, I even completed all the theory classes through Excelsior, before I ran out of money. Through it all I've maintained my Professionalism. As far as I'm concerned the skills that were taken away from us, was an high-handed and illegal ,act how can you deregulate taught and existing skills. I blame our state boards, who take our money and do not look out for our interests. For all nurses LVN/RN who follow and honor the creed FIRST DO NO HARM are professionals.:loveya:
  6. well I would sign the petition maybe its before I decided to go to Nursing school I already had my AS degree all nursing prerequisites, so since day dot have approached my assessments utilizing the disease process, however when former LVN/LPNs who have completed the step-up program, talk about the difference because you know use the disease process, I want to scream. How did you assess your pt as a LVN/LPN how could you not use this process to update careplans, to report to your Charge nurse about changes, to give PRN treatments. How were you able to complete your care?. Please tell me.
  7. Hello Everyone, Well on a matter of principle I have just signed the petition being sent to congress. Every LVN/LPN owe it to themselves to signed this petition, its not just a question of qualification, but rather one of Honor. When I went through school, I had to pass all clinical skills in the lab every semester for 4 semesters, and practices at these same local colleges then and up until maybe 4-5yrs ago was the RN students got to pick what skills to take tests on. This meant new RN grads applying at local hospitals having only thoretical knowledge of some basic nursing skills, and how do I know because it happened at my hospital, A few years after I graduated a new RN grad was asked to place a foley and she said "whats a foley". After that I know one local college changed its clinical expectations and Just like the LVN students, the RN students had to pass all lab clinicals. Just stop and think for a minute, do you have to pay for a licence do you have to maintain continuing education credits before you can renew your licence, we do here in California, 30units every two years. Do you consider yourself a professional and competent individual are you not tired and fed-up of sometimes being in an enviroment where your competence may be in question because you chose to be a bedside nurse as opposed to the nurse who prefers to do paperwork rather than get their hands dirty. One comment heard from a new grad (RN)"I was told in school I wouldn't be doing this,(we were cleaning a pt at the time) I would be a manager only. I wonder what the N in RN stands for. The N in LVN stands for Nurse. If you stand by and stay silent, the RN Educators will take even more skills away from us. How many of you feel angry about what we have already lost. Now is the time to unite now is the time to stand up and be counted. Send out the call, sign the petition. Tell congress "WE WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT WE HAVE VOICE. Take care Peace & Love:smokin:
