I got an email from Karen Sturgill today with orientation checklist info and lots of other helpful info regarding immunization requirements, parking for orientation, health insurance, financial aid, etc. So look for it, just in case you still need some info.

I got info about the background check and a request for $100 tuition deposit, along with the vaccination request. Nothing else, yet. Also, does anyone have a GRU email yet? The letter with the vaccination info said you can't do the online submission without one.

AirForceRN, I think those dates are the same for all of us since all of the campus orientations take place in Augusta. The three of us should figure out a time and place to meet up during orientation...my name is Melody Rice.

Catfishjon, I don't live in Athens. I live in Lawrenceville, which is about 35 minutes away. The two major hospitals in Athens are St. Mary's and Athens Regional. I've heard good things about both, and I know Athens Regional was named to a few of the "Best of" lists recently. One of the nurses I went to school with worked in the ARMC ED for a few years, but recently left to manage a breast health clinic. Northeast Georgia Health Systems is also not that far away, and has amazing employee satisfaction scores. They're supposed to open a new hospital near Winder (Just off Hwy 316 between Lawrenceville and Athens) in the next few years.

I wrote down the dates for the mandatory three-day orientation in August, but I can't seem to locate the folder I put them in. Was it August 18, 19, 20? I need to make sure I get that on my calendar at work so I can block those days out ASAP.

I got a call this afternoon, as well. They offered me a spot at Athens for the acute care program. I'm really excited, and glad it didn't end up being a four-week wait. Congratulations!

My interview was also very casual, though I was a bit shocked when it was a panel interview with six individuals. I was also told they're hoping to have final admission decisions in 2-4 weeks. Catfishjon, which specialty are you applying to? AirForceRN1, I hope your interview went well.

I have an interview March 13 for the post-BSN, AGACNP-DNP program. I requested the Athens campus as well, so I might see you there, Catfishjon.

The NEAT scholarship is offered to Emory Nursing students. Here's a link to their 2010 - 2011 catalog. They also participate in the CHANCES program (the similar program for CHOA). The NEAT program info is on page 22. You could get more information by calling the school of nursing. They also host several open houses at the school of nursing. They're free to attend, but you need to register, as seating is limited. I ruled Emory out due to the high cost, but several grads I work with stated the school will work hard to help you fund your education there. Good luck. I hope the link is helpful to you.

I am one of the lucky Emory Resident nurses, as well. I actually graduated December 2010 and, due to paperwork issues, didn't receive my license in time to meet the deadline for the earlier residency program. I worked on a contract basis for a home health agency while I waited for the program to start. In June, they were bought out by another company and they wanted me to sign a one-year contract. Since I wasn't willing to do that, they said they couldn't use me anymore. I went without a paycheck until I began the program September 12 (the day before my birthday, so it was a great gift!). It was hard, but it was definitely worth it. I did my senior practicum at Emory and was hired to work in the unit (MICU) where I did my hours. I think doing my clinical there, and networking during this time, helped me get in more than anything; but there are several resident nurses who never did any clinical there and had no affiliation with Emory at all. I know several came from out of state schools, as well. For the admission process, just bookmark the New Grad page on the Emory website and start watching for the application link to appear. If there are specific areas you're interested in, make that information known, but also make sure they know you're open to other areas as well. If you can make a visit to the area, try and attend any open houses they have (even if they are only for experienced nurses) so you can meet some of the unit managers and get your face/name in their head. You are at a bit of a disadvantage since you are not an Emory grad (I wasn't either) since they give first consideration to Emory grads who received the NEAT scholarship (they pay for a % of their tuition in exchange for employment after graduation), but one advantage is that Emory is a large entity and has several hospitals in the Atlanta area. Our residency class is the largest so far. I think there were about 80 of us in orientation (mostly going to EUHM and EUH). Good luck. I love my unit and I'm thrilled to be here.

ckrst1, it doesn't work that way. The study guide generated after you take the test is bases on what you answer incorrectly. It tailors the study guide to what you need to study, based on how you did during your test. So it would be different for different people, based on the score and which questions were correct and incorrect. Does that make sense?

I can tell you how I'm doing it. I work full time at night, go to school during the day, and try to find time to sleep whenever I can. I have an advantage over other single moms, as my daughter is a teenager and will soon be getting her driver's license, but it's still hard. You can max out on student loans (on top of whatever financial aid you get) and that will help offset some of the bills, but you have to be diligent about using them to pay bills and not treat it as "mad money". Good luck. I hope you can find a way to make it happen.

You're correct, but most of them combine the BSN and MSN cirriculum, and you essentially earn both degrees during the program. Others require that you have a non-nursing BSN degree. Neither seems like a viable option for teenaxo at this point.

There are plenty of LPN jobs in Atlanta. If you're interested in LTC, the possibilities are endless. There are also tons of staffing agencies who hire LPN's for hospital, LTC, and physician office jobs...often these are great ways to find a permanent position.

:raises hand: I, too am one of the crazies. I'm taking A&P II and lab this summer during a 7 week mini-mester. The class will be Tues and Thurs 8am-10:30am for lecture and 11am-2pm for the lab. One positive is that my A&P I instructor is teaching part II this summer, so I know what to expect from him regarding tests, etc. Good luck everyone! I'm also taking Pharmacology this summer at the same time. I already got my acceptance letter for the nursing program, so this is the only way I can get in my last pre-reqs in time to start Fall '08.

i hope your lpn program is going well! just to clarify, you cannot get a msn until you first get a bsn. the possible steps from lpn are associate degree (asn), bachelor's degree (bsn), and then you could pursue a master's degree (msn). if you obtain your asn, bsn, or eventual msn you would be licensed as a registered nurse (after passing your state board exam) and would perform those duties at any job you choose.

I am an LPN working toward my BSN. I took the TEAS a few months ago and didn't have any trouble with the test at all. I used only the study guide and my score was well above the required % for my program...I got my acceptance a few weeks ago. Keep studying the book. I found the test to be very similar to the questions in the guide. Just take your time on the test and try to answer every question. Good luck!
