GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!
Hi HB 49 will not permit Georgia students that have completed 50% clinical completion in a traditional RN program to obtain licensure. I was recently licensed in Georgia after transferring from a traditional GA nursing program to Excelsior before the 7/2008 deadline. When I asked Excelsior why future traditional RN students were left out of the language of the bill I was told that Excelsior felt it would have had a better chance of getting passed. Excelsior also stated that anyone who applies in Georgia that is attempting to transfer from a traditional RN program will have to sign a form stating that they understand they will not be able to obtain licensure in the state of Georgia.

GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!
Hello Everyone, I came across this and wanted to post for everyone's view. I found this at the Georgia Nurse's Association site http://georgianurses.org which links directly to it. God bless and Merry Christmas to everyone. For Immediate Release December 22, 2008 FFI Contact: Matt Carrothers Director of Media Relations 404-656-4269 Professionals with licensing inquiries should contact the Professional Licensing Boards at 478-207-2440 Actions Taken By the Georgia Board of Nursing at its December 19 Meeting Macon, Ga.—The Georgia Board of Nursing met by conference call on Friday, December 19, 2008. The Board discussed the impact of the statutory change regarding applicants for licensure by endorsement which became effective July 1, 2008. The Board determined that applicants for licensure for endorsement may petition the Board, on a case by case basis, to grant a rule waiver or variance pertaining to the applicant’s nursing education under the following criteria: Applicant was actively enrolled in a nursing program on July 1, 2008. Applicant completed all program requirements and will have successfully graduated from the program by July 1, 2010. Applicant holds a valid license from another state or jurisdiction, as required for licensure by endorsement. Applicant applied for endorsement in Georgia by December 31, 2010. Applicant complies with procedure for rule waiver/variance as provided by the Administrative Procedure Act. The Georgia Board of Nursing will hold its next meeting Thursday, January 15 and Friday, January 16, 2009 at the Professional Licensing Boards in Macon.

Ex nursing students
Hey tbone, Just sending you some encouragement....I had the same concern as you at first. If YOU don't make not being an LPN an issue it won't be one on your CPNE or your NCLEX. I came from a traditional brick and mortar nursing program into Excelsior's program. I was not a LPN, tech, or anything. Just prepare thoroughly the Excelsior way, keep the nerves in check, pray, and you'll do fine.

You're welcome.

GA EC nurse's lets stage a PROTEST
I just wanted to politely correct your last statement. The GaBON said that Excelsior and the GNA needed to make their presentation to the Education Committee for the GaBON, not the Board of Education.

Excelsior and the Texas BON
Stuck to the Excelsior content guide and used textbooks, practice tests.

Yes there are other states. Right now even if you have been an RN for 20 years if you graduated from Excelsior you cannot get endorsed into Georgia.

EricEnfermo gives great advice. However, that advice would not have even helped Georgia Excelsior graduates or students since there is no mention of Excelsior, online, or distance (except related to a specific medical center) in any of the minutes. In addition, there is no mention of Excelsior in House Bill 1041 that was signed by the Georgia's governor. I say hurry up and get your ducks in a row in whatever state you're in if you're in Excelsior's program. Also I was told today that there are no changes Virginia's BON original decision. You must be done by 12/31/09 to obtain endorsement.

Excelsior and the Texas BON
Unfortunately all of the proactiveness in the world cannot protect ANY Excelsior students in ANY state when dealing with either their Board of Nursing or Excelsior College. I dotted every i and crossed every t before even entering Excelsior's program by contacting the GaBON to make sure I could obtain licensure on completion of the Excelsior RN program. Well you know the rest of the story. I was notified via email by Excelsior August 6, 2008 after I had to request them to send me the same email that other Excelsior students and/or recent grads received on August 5th regarding a decision that was first put before Georgia legislators in January 2008, signed by Georgia's governor in May 08, and made effective July 1, 2008. This was not in any way an overnight decision. We (Excelsior graduates) were only first notified by licensure denial from the GaBON in July then officially by Excelsior in August.

Please attend the upcoming Georgia Board meeting in Macon. The exact date and time that the Excelsior/GaBON issue is being presented has not been provided. At this point I would definitely not depend on Excelsior to provide that info. However, the dates of the meeting are Sept. 17-19th. I personally have spoken with quite a few current students and recent grads that plan to attend IN SUPPORT OF OURSELVES as knowledgeable, competent, safe practicing nurses. See you there.

ADN transfer to Excelsior
Hi, I saw your post and I just wanted to encourage you to make sure you complete 50% of the clinicals of your traditional nursing program - not just 50% of the traditional program. There is a difference. I wanted to add that b/c I did the same thing and everything has worked out really well for me with transferring to Excelsior. However, I had a friend who withdrew from a traditional program thinking that it was 50% of the program instead of the clinicals. She was denied acceptance into Excelsior. Just looking out for you.:wink2: I will add that the transition to Excelsior's program was great. I was very successful in everything and I am now waiting to take the NCLEX soon.
