I started out in the ER and now am in ICU. I like ER better. In ER you will do a lot of walking/running around. ICU you tend to sit a lot unless your patients have tests that you have to take them to. Both units are type "A" personalities so make sure you can handle that. Good luck to you what ever you chose. You can always change units!!
  2. What motivates you to give you best nursing care and to do your job well?
  3. What is your hospitals policy about taking a picture of a patients injury even though you have their permission? Can you get fired?
  4. Never fill with NSS. Use sterile water. Your bladder is sterile. Scan to see how much fluid is already in the bladder. I normal person feels the urge to urinate at around 300cc. I fill mine to about 200cc or if the patient startes to feel uncomfortable.
  5. i have been a nurse for a year now and am going through a four week evaluation by my unit director for being assertive. i had two incidents were an experienced nurse told me the wrong information. one of the incidences was with a cardiac drip. if i would of listened to her, i would have killed my patient! well, i was pulled to my bosses office for this and as givin a warning because of my behavior. i stuck up for my self and after 25 minutes of telling this person all of the resources that i got my correct information. she still told me i was wrong. yeah, time to leave that department!:angryfire

OK, what's the difference between a breastfeeding chair and the gliders with the gliding ottomans? Is there a difference between the way one moves over another?:uhoh21:
  7. I'm a new grad in an ER. I carry a little black book and write tons of things in it. In my department, the nurses are very helpful. My biggest thing right now is getting organized. I'm having a problem with putting the knowledge into clinical practice. It's a hard transision from student to RN, but I jumped in feet first into the ED, so I expect to be overwhelmed a lot. I bought a PDA and I'm still trying to get things loaded on it so that I have good resources in one spot. Hand in there! It sounds like a lot of the new grads that started in the ED are all having the same challenges. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one!! Keep a good atittude! Don't let the overwhelming experience kill your confidence.
  8. Thanks for all your help!!
  9. Does anyone have a funny poem that I can use to put on my invitations for my graduation party?? I can't believe it's almost over!!! :balloons:
  10. Thanks for all the advise. I have been getting negative feedback when I tell nurses that I tooka job in the ED. This is very discouraging... After reading your posts, I have a lot more confidence that I am making the right decision. :balloons:
  11. OK, someone out there has to have a comment..... I just accepted a position in this unit and I wanted to know what comes with the territory. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
  12. OK, What do you like about neuro ICU, and what do you dislike about it?
  13. My hubby is one year behind me in nursing school. :)
  14. In my program, 9 out of 10 instructors are bi-polar! Up one day and down another.. If you see they are in a bad mood, or you can sense that they need to pick on someone, stay out of there way! Hide from them if you can! Hang in there.... light IS at the end of the tunnel for us students aka glorified aides!!!
  15. Does anyone know if there is a sign-on bonus at Passavant hospital? Or how there shifts are, benifits, how much do they pay for you to continue your education, etc... I wanted to look into this place, but I can't seem to get anyone to call me back. If anyone has any info, please let me know! Thanks a bunch
  16. I feel for ya! Last summer I took Chem, A&P2, and advanced algebra in 6 weeks, while working full time! Good luck and stay focused! You'll get there! Make sure you go in a mini vacation... Also, if you have a few vacation days, use them for test days, or the day before... this will help you out a lot. Take care and God bless!
  17. I heard that they changed the uniforms to be in sync w/ allegheny campus. I guess a lot of people go back and forth between them... We are allowed to get colored steth, pen light, and scissors. We are also allowed to have any kind of watch, as long as it has a sec hand.. I have to check out the shop at Century III.... THanks Jen!:)
  18. There is a store on McKnight Road by Best-Buy that is very helpful. Also Check out the one in Parkway Center Mall. :) :) I ordered the pants from that uniform place. They don't fit well. Id like to get a pair of boot cut myself! And the carnigans that they had were not worth buying! We are allowed to get the one sided stethoscopes too. I found a Littman at allheart for 78 bucks including the shipping charges...:) Make sure you get a name tag or something for it. People seem steal them a lot! I hope this helps...
  19. oops! Sorry! I just realized I posted the same thing twice! :) :) :)
  20. What if some anonymously embarassed them in front of the group! Treat them like children if they act that way! Even make a copy of there job description and get a poster made, then write the ones names on it that do not accept the resposiblity of there carreers! I'm sure all the RN's will get pulled aside, but Hey! It will be worth it! Yeah it's petty, but sometimes in order to get people to understand something, you have to stoop to there level, or embarrass them.. they figure that all the other cna's will look up to them because they are disobeying.... they will show the RN's... they seem to be doing it on purpose.... get under there skin! Make THEM get frustrated! It's all a game to them... play it! :0)
