a birth on my way home
Thanks for sharing a good story. It engenders me to have a deeper appreciation for the wonderful nurses that are out there.

what do nurses hate about doctors?
i’m not a nurse but i frequently interact with several doctors in my unit. i remember a situation where an ms iii came in and inquired about a patient’s medical test. the patient’s medical record was loosely organized and the doctor seemed to have this cast of apathy on his face. we asked him questions about the patient and the doctor didn’t seem to communicate too well with us. five minutes later the doctor was called to see his second patient in another unit. some of us found one patient’s medical file on the table and paged the doctor immediately to come pick up the file. well, the doctor didn’t come pick up the file until 5 hours later! i definitely suggest that when you start medical school this fall, do the following: 1. keep an open mind. 2. don’t think yourself as a know-it-all. be humble! 3. treat your nurses and allied health care members with friendliness and respect. remember, nurses are the backbone of health care. without them, doctors will be doing more work. 4. communicate your needs to the nurses. 5. write legibly. i know mds are busy but make the time to write your orders and comments clearly. what you document down on a patient’s medical file can be used as a legal document if something goes wrong with the patient. 6. when given a patient’s medical record, maintain confidentiality. don’t leave it on the lobby or in another nursing unit. it annoying to see doctors, nurses, etc. leave medical records flatly exposed on the counter.

So many schools, where to apply?!!?!
I do agree with the above statement. You don't need to apply to 10 schools. You're just wasting money on application fees. Applying to 4-5 schools is a good number. Remember, the admitted applicant does not necessarily have good grades, plenty of health-related experience, or lots of research experience. Not everyone who is admitted has a GPA of 3.8 or higher. There are other factors that may influence the admissions committee decision to accept/reject you.

Any Fall 2008 UCLA - MECN Program Applicants out there?
Hello everyone, There is a Yahoo Group for the class of 2010. Membership is restricted to students because there are some information such as phone numbers that I feel should not be released to the public. http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=UCLA+MECN+2010 Check out the site and send a request to be added to the group.

Any Fall 2008 UCLA - MECN Program Applicants out there?
Hello finger crossed, You're very welcome. Actually it is not too late for you to take classes this summer. In fact, if you have a few pre-requisite courses to take this summer, I highly encourage you to take them. For example, if you still need Nursing 50 or Epi 100, you should take them this summer at UCLA or the course equivalence at any of the Cal State Universities. If you don't get housing at UCLA, no problem. You might need to look around Santa Monica, West LA, or any of the co-ops for available vacancies. Because of our crazy schedule, I recommend sharing a room with another nursing student (common school schedule, study schedule, etc.).

Nursing school vs. Nursing
Hello ranaazah, Well said. I also want to add that it seems like "nurses do eat their young." It bothers me that nursing students go through a rigorous program, hoping to graduate, pass the NCLEX, and receive support from older nurses. In lieu, we have "nurses who eat their young nurses" and for some young nurses, they end up feeling discouraged and not wanting to return to the profession. The nursing shortage in this nation is severe. Nurses who've been in the profession for a very long time need to understand this and foster encouragement for young nurses. I'm sorry to say but if "nurses who eat their young nurses" primarily due to young nurses nowadays receiving advanced education, then it's time for the older nurses to put this envy behind them and focus on how they can learn/help younger nurses.

Any Fall 2008 UCLA - MECN Program Applicants out there?
Hello fingercrossed and wait-listers, What you heard about "over 20 people from the waiting list last year made it in" is true. Schools like CSU Long Beach have a later deadline so some won't be hearing from CSULB until May (or even June!). When May or June rolls around, some students will give up their seats to attend other schools. It may not seem like the waiting list is moving, but do know that your status can change any time between now and July. Hang in there and keep your hope up. :wink2:

Hello RedHead85, I just sent you an add request. Check your e-mail. I look forward to getting to know you. See, it is difficult to find me on any social network. Some of my friends have a hard time finding me. If you type my full name in the search engine, you will find many people who share the same full name that I have. I usually end up finding my buddies on these social networks.

Do men have priority when considered for Nursing School?
Hello Jason, I don't think nursing school gives more admissions points if you're a male. Every nursing applicant is evaluated on the same page. However, some schools may not want all nurses in their classes. They may take in a few males to balance the demographics of the incoming class. I recommend you to contact the nursing school that you would like to go to and inquire them if such quota is used for male applicants.

Western University of Health Sciences
Hello ham_tranwich, Congratulation on being admitted to the FNP MSN-E portion of the program at Western University. I just found out about this thread and am glad to meet some of you. While I have not gone through this program before, I personally don't like doing the master's portion on-line. Nursing is one of those professions where you need to have direct hands-on experience with the patient. When you do the master's portion of the program, there are courses such as Advanced Physical Assessment where you need to come to the classroom and have professors show you how to conduct a physical assessment at a higher level. It's one of those classes where you have to be present to absorb the information. Also, one thing that came to my mind is preceptorship. Will students be looking for their own preceptorship or will the faculty assigned them one?

Any Fall 2008 UCLA - MECN Program Applicants out there?
Thanks, RedHead85 for the housing information. :wink2:Yeah, it would be much quicker to do it online than to snail mail the housing application. The best thing is you don't have to bring your car to campus four times a week. Also, near the end of the program, I wouldn't have to deal with an enormous debt. Yes, I would love to know my classmates on these social networks. The CSULA ELM for summer 2008, UCSF and Columbia threads are very interesting to read. It is exciting to read the UCSF thread because people are meeting up before the term begins for social gatherings and other fun activities. Current students in the CSULA ELM are providing a warm welcome to its new cohort which I find to be very cheerfully encouraging. I hope we get a great deal of support and guidance from the previous cohort and from SON. If we don't have that sort of encouragement from SON, it's okay. I do hope everyone will work together to complete this rigorous program. I want feel connected with my UCLA classmates. Maybe it is too early now and not many of our classmates are aware of what AllNurses.com has to offer. Anyways, I really look forward to get to know each of you. Some people in our class may prefer to work alone, but really, in nursing school you cannot do the work by yourself. It requires team work. I was thinking of forming a Yahoo Group so that we can organize the information we have from SON and mass e-mail everyone important information. Has anyone here started a Yahoo Group? If no one has, I can go ahead and create a group for our incoming classmates.

Any Fall 2008 UCLA - MECN Program Applicants out there?
to everyone on the waiting list, i'm praying for you guys to get the good news tomorrow. i bet you that there will be several people calling in tomorrow (the deadline)to notify son on whether or not he/she wants a seat for fall 2008. it's always like that where people call in at the very last minute. i assume that the son office closes around 5:00 p.m. so call/send her an e-mail between 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. if you call her at 9 a.m., i don't think she can tell you on the spot whether or not you are in. be assertive and tell her that you need to know today. even if she tells you that i can't tell you until monday, tell her that you need to know your status today (friday). keep in mind that you need to give yourself enough time to mail your housing application to the housing office. only a small number of housing units are allocated to son graduate students. you need to know asap so you can get your housing application to the housing office by april 11. this is not the postmark deadline. the housing office must receive your application by this date.
