  1. Two days doesn't seem like very much time. I would be very upset by that comment, an hope it is not an example of more to come. I work at 26 bed icf. We get a day of paperwork and then 3 12 hour days of orientation, more if you feel you need it. Good luck jenn
  2. First see if they have a behavior plan or care plan to address the situation. I would try to redirect, example we have a res that grabs, he doesn't know better, but it is inappropriate so when he reaches out to grab we meet with a hand shake. I would not let him sit on your lap encourage a different position next to you or across from you. It usually involves a lot or repetition.
  3. Thanks for sharing!
  4. In addition, i don't see how taking this child from his parents and having him committed would be the best solution, in fact the idea very much upsets me! I am not saying there are not some children that are not severely disturbed but this doesn't seem to be so in this case. I think everyone involved needs educated on the situation. You just can't medicate a child into a stupor because he hits and kicks, if he is already in a special class, maybe a special school is the answer where there are plans to follow for certain behaviors.
  5. This doesn't sound like a cut and dry situation, I am sure there are a lot of factors we are not aware of. The child may need a one on one threw the day. Routine is very important. If the routine of my residents is disrupted it causes major behavior problems. Tell you mom to be patient and to try and respond the same way each time a behavior occurs. good luck
  6. Hello Everyone. I've been an LPN since 2000. I work at an ICF with 26 mentally and physically disabled adults. I've been there 7 years. Mom of a toddler and hopefully more to come. Even if i don't always love my job, it was the best thing I ever did.
  7. Personally I was addicted to Ambien, but at the time i was battling depression after losing a loved one. At that time anything that made me feel good was addicting.
  8. I live in Ohio, no LPNs are not being phased out. It is much easier to find a job and better pay for LPN than an MA in Ohio. Hospitals are cutting out LPN in my area but there are still alot of great jobs. There will always be talk of LPN being phased out, but talk is cheap. Basically when i went to nursing school we discussed this and there would be no way to completely phase us out, without offering some type of continuing ed. program of grandfather clause.
  9. Good luck, I hope you can find a solution. I had to cut back to part time when my husband took a job, mandatory 6 days a week on afternoons. Soon he will be on swing. I'm lucky my DON now has 3 kids. She gets it. Our schedule isn't always perfect, but she really tries. I don't know anywhere in my area that has daycare 7 days a week. I know I would work more if our facility provided it. Yes in reality as nurse's we all know we have to work holidays and weekends, but as parents we know how hard it is to find child care. I would try to see if you could work a different shift that day opposite of your hubby. And we may all know about the hours when we go into nursing, but lets face it LIFE HAPPENS.
  10. So sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
  11. I'm a lpn in Ohio. My hourly wage is good for my area, but there is no retirement, and lets just say I'm thankful for my husbands health insurance, right now if you have the insurance @ my work can you say 4,000 dollar deductible. On the plus side most days I like my job.
  12. I wear my wedding band and a watch. last time i wore a necklace it got ripped off. I do remember my nursing instructors preaching no jewelry. But i don't work in a hospital, we had some sickness going around so left it off a few weeks.
  13. I am so sorry for your loss. The family and friends are in my prayers.
  14. ALL nurses make errors. it sounds like you monitored the pt and notified the MD. You should let your supervisor know.
  15. april&em I don't know where you live. I live in rural Ohio and aides here make what your saying, lpn in your area make. pumpkin1984 you can get on line and find the average salary of lpn in your area or anywhere you are thinking of moving, that way you have a better idea.
