LPNs Supervising RNs
The bottom line is and everyone knows that it is true that LPN's and CNA's are the low men on the pole and it is no secret. It doesn't matter if you have 1000 years experience behind you as an LPN, it is based on the initials behind your name. That is why I went on and I get much more respect in the profession as an RN than an LPN.

If have met enough to form my opinion that LPN's and CNA's are trouble and I choose to stay away from them. I only speak to them on a professional basis and that is it.

In all of my years of nursing I have yet to be convinced that there is a decent, trustworthy CNA or LPN out there.

Piece of advice - if you are given an order by an LPN or ever told anything about a patient or resident by an LPN, double check it yourself or call an another RN or your DON. LPN's love to burn RN's especially when they are wishing they could be an RN themself.

When I went to LPN school, I didn't take all the courses listed because they were for the RN's not the LPN's. These classes are not offered for every LPN course - I went to the top LPN school in the country, I should know.

I disagree. RN's are taught more deeper assessment and leadership skills. I am an RN also and still wouldn't ever work under or for an LPN, end of story. LPN's don't have to take all the classes you listed, I know this because I was an LPN before I got my RN and yes there scope of practice is different. That is why we are called RN's and they are LPN's.

have you taken a review course to help you learn how to take the test? i paid $300 and learned how to read the questions and not to panic during the exam. i know kaplan offers one.

I went to nursing school with a lady who was 58 and got a job working in the trauma unit of a local hospital and is doing extremely well at it.

That is unacceptable! LPN's are not equal and will never be to RN's and I would never work under an LPN EVER!!! I worked too long and too hard to be an RN and that to me is demeaning. Not only that, but LPN's should not be in supervisory roles especially in LTC. They are just there to give meds and do treatments and help the aides when needed.

my attitude is just fine and thank you for your concern. i am and will never be responsible for the nursing shortage. i will say after reading most of these entries that if you look the younger generation of nurses feels the same way i do - that it is time that older nurses who can't cut it anymore need to step aside and let the younger ones in to start their careers. i will never apologize for stating the truth and other nurses feel the way i do.

Nurses Past Their Prime
There comes a time in an older nurses career when he/she just can't cut it anymore, but they are too prideful to get out of the business therefore making it ultimately miserable for newer nurses to grow in their careers. I wish there was an age limitation on nurses to either have to quit or be removed from the workforce when they continue to be crabby and mean to the other staff. I contribute the older nurses causing the younger newer nurses not to stay in nursing because of the way they are treated thus assisting the nursing shortage. The older nurses should help and teach the newer nurses the ropes instead of being mean and nasty. It is intimidating when you have an old nurse breathing down your neck and not willing to help you learn especially when you are a new kid on the block.

Why the Customer Service emphasis?
so true. then the scores are looked at by management and then of course you hear about them at staff meetings where they stress that you have to be nice to the patients and the families regardless if they are both standing in the middle of the hall screaming at you in front of your peers and other doctors. it is all about the almighty dollar and how to rake them in!

I can speak for the LPN's and CNA's I have dealt with and yes they have caused me much grief and personal mental anguish at the workplace. However, if more LPN's and CNA's knew their position and listen and did what the RN's needed and wanted, it would go much smoother. The RN's are the above the lpn's and cna's and will and should stay that way.

I beg to differ that TITLE does make the person and the profession. How many times as an LPN were you asked if you were going to be an RN and you know that you were asked. I am very much a team player; however, LPN's and CNA's were I have worked are always jealous of RN's because this is what they want to be and can't. This arguement could go on forever, but I will end it here and now. LPN's and CNA's have caused me grief and agony in the workplace and they will continue to do so to others in the future. lunch time insubordination
I beg to differ. Even if one is not on the clock and the person in the bathroom was OK, the CNA should have at least helped or found other help for the RN. That is why they are called "nursing assistants" to help the nurse.

Hang in there! We have all felt or do feel this way right now. It is sad to say but this is the clinical setting. Venting does help you mentally to get it off your chest.

Question about pumping at work.
I have worked with nurses who pumped and they just excuse themselves and do it in private. We other nurses understood and it was never an issue. Hopefully your co-workers will understand and not make it into a drama scene.

This is not the point. The point is that the CNA was asked to help the nurse and made excuses to do so. When a subordinate is asked to help, unless they are in an emergency situation, they should stop and help. I find that CNA's are reluctant to do alot of things for RN's especially if it interferes with lunch and smoke breaks. Unfortunately, the only one you can depend on is yourself and hopefully you get a good RN co-worker that will help you when you need it. This CNA should have been reported and written up.

Whatever you do, DON"T GIVE UP! There is a place for all of us! Nursing is a hard profession; however, if you keep perservering and have the desire to nurse, you will find your nitch! There is always prayer!

I would just like to say in regard to your situation that I am sorry and i have been in the same boat. I was recently terminated from a supervisor position because nurses who I supervised created lies and of course the DON believed them. Then again, the DON is one who can't stick to one story and plays the RN's against each other. However, in lieu of your situation, please do not be down on your self. For some reason, nurses like to make it hard for each other and I think the whole absenteeism excuse is that, an excuse. If a company wants to keep a good nurse, they will do anything to do just that keep them happy. When one door closes another opens and please just hang in there. I am sure that you have plenty of great experience to land a job that you really enjoy and that you won't mind going to everyday. I know it bites being fired, but take it as a learning experience and move on. There are places that do appreciate a great nurse!!

My question is: Why are nurses so mean to each other?
In my experience of working in the medical field, out of a group of 10 combined RN's, LPN's, and CNA's, I would say at least 8 of these people are either jealous, miserable in their own life, or hateful and want to cause trouble.

my experiences have been in the nursing profession that nurses and i mean all nurses rn's and lpn's and i may add cna's alike and are mean, vindictive, deceitful, and hateful to each other. i am proud to say that i have never looked for trouble to got anyone else in trouble in my place of employment; however, i have been on the receiving end of the hatefulness and didn't deserve any of it. i don't know if it is in the areas i have worked, but i don't look for any trouble and stay out of interpersonal conflicts. i was an lpn before an rn and i think working with the people who i worked with as lpn's may have contributed to it. i still am in the frame of mind that rn's are held higher than lpn's and always will be. i have no regrets about becoming an rn, just regrets about the areas of nursing i have chosen to work in.
