  1. I have my ADN...base pay is 29.23...I was working nights getting diff of 3 dollars more but I moved to day shift so no diff...we're a private psych hospital and very progressive...at last meeting they said our last seclusion was almost a year ago! I live in Texas and cost of living is dirt cheap here...
  2. I was elligible fpr NCLEX with one DWI pending...no other priors and they approved me with zero stipulations...but from my understanding 1 DWI is seen as a common youthful indiscretion...a 2nd one is frowned upon like you didnt learn your lesson...it's a case by case basis and can take up t 45 days for an answer fron the BON unless it goes into review...they make grant u a license but with stipulations which is extremely hard to get hired with..or order you to do TPAPN...
  3. Psych always interested me...in theory and in clinicals...I was leaning more towards ICU or ER b/c I need a high stress job and figured that would be a good first job b/c of skills and what not...but I was offered a psych position and I haven't regretted it once. And just listening to my friends who chose med/surg I cringe...I never want to do that...
  4. I will most likely never do traditional beside nursing...I chose psych for many reasons and so far I love it....there is alot of flexibility in nursing but the majority of jobs are at a medical hospital
  5. I think if you do agency that number is realistic...it may be a bit high for PRN but really it depends on the hospital...some hospitals pay wayyyyy more than others. I have one nurse making low 20's an hour full time, and another making 41/hr full time...but I know going agency pays well
  6. if you go into any specialty you are pidgeon holed....an l and d nurse would have a hard time getting a job on a medsurg floor...i chose psych as my first nursing job b/c i love psych...it's interesting to me and i don't like IV's, NG tubes, trachs lol... plus i like actually having time to talk with my pts...I love just sitting down and trying to teach coping skills or just be a listening ear...i love all the crazy stories that come from my pts lol...i love seeing a psychotic pt come in bc they got off their meds, and then we get their meds straight, intense therapy, and d/c them home as a brand new person...
  7. I got a DWI 3 months before I graduated nursing school...so I had to tell my school, they allowed me to stay enrolled...then I had to write a letter to the BON describing what happened and wait 45 days for them to review my case and make a decision on if they would still trust me to take NCLEX...in my letter i detailed what happened, took FULL responsibility over my actions and explained how sorry I was yet still grateful that I didn't do anymore serious harm like injure or kill someone...they approved me to take NCLEX and I didn't have a problem getting a job...I disclosed it to my job that I had a pending criminal charge, a misdemeanor and that was that... best bet is to be honest with the BON NOW...I was not licensed at the time but I had to disclose everything b/c they will find out and then if you didn't disclose somethin, you may be seen as dishonest
  8. I work at an acute psych facility and we have no pyxis and do paper charting...psych is my passion so my only other experience is working as a tech at a medical hospital...I have a charge nurse, I'm the med nurse and we have 1-2 techs...we have up to 16 pts... my work load is very doable...sometimes the paperwork is redundant but there are some benefits of paper over computer for sure...papers never crash lol or have technical difficulties... when I come on at 7p...I pull all my meds that are scheduled for 9p...then start administering those...all narcotics are signed out so I pull those and sign those out (when I first come on I count the narcotics with the previous shift to make sure theyre all there) your situation sounds doable...it's a higher pt load but you have more techs..depending on the acuity of your pts and what kinda floor it is depends on how many meds you will have to pass...my pts are lower functioning so I don't have a ton of meds to give and very few med seeking pts...
  9. I needed a declatory order b/c I got arrested during nursing school....it took me like 3 weeks...I was just a month out from graduation so I was worried that I was not going to be able to take NCLEX with the rest of my peers...they approved me to take NCLEX with zero stipulations on my license (it was my firstDWI) and I am now working as an RN for close to 2 months! They say up to 45 days but those are actual days, not business so it is likely you will hear something back...call the BON every couple of days b/c it will show up that you are clear before you receive a letter stating that you are clear..goodluck!
  10. houston was just voted the coolest city by forbes fyi lol..and we're also the most diverse city more so than ny! anyways..i'm a new grad rn and my base is 29/hr but i get 3 dollars extra for night so 32/hr...my lowest paying friend makes 21/hr (without diff) and my highest paying friend is 25 without diff but i heard starting pay somewhere else was 27... i do psych nursing by the way...
  11. I'm a new gran RN with my ADN and my base pay is 29/hr plus my shift diff makes it 32..I turned down a job that was 24.50/hr plus 4.00 shift diff
  12. I think a good nurse is someone who realizes they have room for improvement and is concerned that they can always do better. We are not perfect, but the mark of a good nurse is someone who cares and strives to better the care that they give.
  13. I was recently hired at a psych hospital...one of my first choices..I also just graduated a month ago...well each unit is staffed like this...1 RN who is charge nurse, 1 LVN who does all meds and treatments, and 1-2 tech's who maintain the flow of the unit... I'm a new grad (RN), but after my couple week orientation, I'm charge nurse...what do you think of this? Is this typical practice at psych facilities? Am I at great risk for losing my license? I do have great judgement skills and think I'm a good leader... I just want some other opinions on this...
  14. I graduated a month ago and I've received two job offers and just got an e-mail wanting to set up an interview for a possible third....I worked during nursing school as a tech...that is so highly valued IMO...you know what it's like to be the low man on the totem pole and you really appreciate your tech's as well... I also had a recruiter look at my resume and help me with it...
  15. same here....the last day was on the 6th correct? and it starts sometime in august? from previous threads I've gathered that they are pretty slow moving....
  16. I'm a new grad who just started a psych position...I'm just wondering what is the RN's role at your facility? At mine, each unit has 1 RN, 1 LVN, and 1-2 techs....tech's maintain the millieu, organize group activites, ensure pt's are following activites on the schedule... the LVN does all the meds and treatments, the RN supervises everybody else (is the charge nurse), charts, and converses with the docs... each unit can have a max of 16 pts... this is just the gist of it, I've only worked 2 days but that's what I've gathered...
  17. 2nd itnerview went really well...she said I could expect a phone call in a couple days...I'm going to decline if they do make an offer...I got the job at the psych hospital and it's everything I want...great pay and benefits, and I can work mon thru fri and have every weekend off!
  18. I think this depends on the facility and where you live...I know tons of people in med-surg who would love to get out but the market is just so competitive out there....
  19. I was offered a job today at a psych facility...psych nursing is exactly what I want to do so im very excited to be in such a position. I'm a new grad by the way...I have a 2nd round interview this monday at an acute care/rehab hospital where it's more traditional med-surg-y type of stuff... if they offer me a job as well, would it be silly to decline since i believe psych is what i want to do? I'm pretty sure psych exp is only really transferrable to other psych facilities lol...
  20. I have several friends who got hired...a couple for the medsurg spots, 2 for imu, 1 for icu, and the ER is doing their interviews on the 19th...if you haven't heard anything by now, it seems unlikely that you will since they have already made job offers...these are just people that i graduated with so I dunno about the other spots and other applicants
  21. Im interested in working at Cypress Creek Psych facility (RN position)..anybody have any info on it? What are the shifts like and the pay? Good place to work? I love psych!
  22. it said registered nurse
  23. My interview went very well...it was actually with HR and she was very pleased with my responses and the fact that I've been a CNA for over a year b/c alot of nurses just push stuff onto the tech's making the patients wait...she said the CNO gets in tonight so I should expect to hear from them wed/thurs and set up a second round interview with the CNO. She did not care that I was a GN. I got a very good feel from her and the place as well. If I have a second interview I will make sure to ask about patient and staff ratios... so if anyone knows about that I'd love to hear it...I'm also curious about pay lol... it's not a deciding factor but I'm definitely curious haha...
  24. yes in the houston area...i applied online
  25. I was written up and received a critical incident in my third semester..I was preparing to change the dressing on a pt's central line...hospital polocy said to remove with one pair of sterile gloves, remove, don new sterile gloves and clean and apply new dressing...well after I removed my first pair of gloves, my teacher instructed me to untie his gown to have a better view of the area, so I did just that...problem was he was on contact for MRSA of the nares and she wrote me up for not wearing gloves when untying his gown... I wouldn't sweat it. I just graduated and have an interview Monday. Nursing school is supposed to be about the learningexperience, we all make mistakes and they do not define us...
