Fat Lpn Student
I honestly don't have much to say, I just wanted to let you know that not all people are the same and I for one view a person for who they are not what they look like. If it continues with this teacher it may be wise to pull her aside and ask her why your stories are wasteful but others are not, or possibly just ask her if she has a problem you based on her actions towards you. If this gets you no where, then move up the chain in finding someone to figure out what the problem is with the teacher. Hang in there, and remember your their for one reason and one reason only, not to make friends but to better yourself. Obviously these types of people will not be quality nurses.

so when is it wrong to stand for unfairness...
While I do feel you should have taken her aside, I am sure a lot of us do not know what prompted this conversation to take publicly. You stated you did not want to name names out loud but the teacher pushed you to do so. It seems to me by her behavior she was not to happy this conversation took place and may have possibly baited you enough to act in a unprofessional manor, but two wrongs do not make a right. While you are expected to act in a professional and nondisruptive way so is your teacher and ultimately it is her responsibility to maintain control of the classroom which she failed to do by allowing this converstation to take place before the class. If you are thrown out of school based on this then the teacher should also have an equally or suitable punishment too as I am sure when she applied and was accepted for her job she was also told she needed to keep the class under control and to maintain a professional setting, which she failed to do. As for humbling yourself, I myself wouldn't do it. I would explain that I was fed up with the fact of the behaviour taking place, the favortism, the lack of respect that is caused by this favortism and that yes you are at fault for not handling it professionaly and maturaly that you do not feel that one offense warrants being removed from school esp. since the teacher let the converstation go on in class by forcing you to respond to her questions. Next time you know to go through the proper grievence with your school when you have a problem. I hope you atleast have a few witnesses who are willing to state the teacher was "egging" you on in this converstation. As for giving you ten minutes to state your case "if any" they have to allow you your say and a proper confrence on the matter. Even if not for your sake, but for your records. Unless there is a lot more to this story then whats being told.

Typical class session
Week 1 for me I sit in class all day from 8am to 3pm. We get two breaks and an hour for lunch. This is complete lecture time. We will study a module for 1 to 2 days then test out on it and move on to the next module. Week 2 for me is Lab/Clinical the time frames very because it depends if its a practice lab, test out lab, or where we are at for clinical. Then it repeats back to week 1, etc. etc.

Is the NAT really necessary?
While I had no problems with the NET either, many people have strong and weak points. I know one girl prior to myself entering the group had a terrible trouble passing the math part of the test she went on to become a very good nurse and even aced medical math. Now I am not sure how your school does it but I know my school only takes the highest scores on the NET which means the best possible students (according to the NET) are admitted into the school. Have you ever heard the old quote... "Use it or lose it"? Many people who take these entrance exams are adults who have been out of school for a very long time. I admit I brushed up on my algebra for almost a month prior to taking the test because I had not touched on algebra in over 10 years. (hence this quote) What one finds easy another finds hard, and even though it was sophomoric to you many people have not seen a sophomore class in over a decade. Personally I don't care if my nurses knows algebra as long as understands how to calculate my IV we are good to go. So I do feel there is a need for this test as there has to be some guideline into entering the school. Remember the nursing is taught on the inside and many people who are not that great at the "basic" education stuff may excel when it comes to nursing.

How do you like your LPN program?
It amazes me how some schools are doing this sort of thing. Being that I am only a very new student to my school. (2 weeks) I have had nothing but positive experiences. In fact they are constantly telling us never to stop learning. They encourage us when we are done with the LPN program to go on and gather even more education. While my school is strict and hard they are also very helpful and have a pretty good open door policy for any type of trouble. I go to an accelerated program and boy I can tell you one thing I knew what accelerated meant but I don't think I ever truly understood what the word meant until now. We learn something one day test out the very next morning. There is really no room for failure either. As for everyone having a different opinion its like that every where. I am sure people would have negative experiences about the school I attend also. But I also think many (not all) people base there opinions on their experiences and personally (MHO) I think when it comes to nursing you need to grasp it all if you can not fully put yourself into it 100% and then muster up another 50% your outcome will not be as good. NOT saying this is your situation by any means. Just a general comment on how peoples opinions very. But if you are truly unhappy with your school and you do not feel you are getting the education you paid for. The best bet for you is to maybe look for another school and see what you can salvage of the money you have already paid into the program. Question for you... If you received that type of note after your clinical, but you state you know the material. I would simply ask your teachers then what they feel you are not making the mark on. With a vague response like that its up to you to find out what they feel you need to be applying in clinical. Have you done that? Good luck to you and I hope things improve.

85% for a passing grade!!
I don't blame you then for wanting to keep it private. :) You through me off with the HIPPA .

85% for a passing grade!!
Out of curiosity, what does HIPAA have to do with school name's? A lot of people come here for advice on which schools they would like to go to and which they would rather stay away from. If it wasn't for these boards I would have gone to a school I know I wouldn't have been happy at, but due to some peoples posts here about a certain school I was able to choose a school that was more suited to my needs and wants. So just curious.. :nuke:

85% for a passing grade!!
I am not really sure who mandates it but I do feel your pain. My school has set the passing grade at 81%. Now this normally would be a B in most school's but at mine its the lowest C possible. Most of our tests are 25 or less questions so it does not leave much room for error. We are only graded on tests and occasionally if we did our homework which is only an extra 2 points. There is no make up work or extra credit work. The only thing we do have the option of is taking our worst test score and retaking that test, but then it will be graded between the two test scores, not taking the highest score.

What do you have to wear to school?
Lab and Theory we can wear normal street clothing. Clinical's are our scrubs. They are celi blue with a navy blue stripe down the legs and around the neck on the top. They have our school name and our own names embroidered on them. All white nursing shoes or tennis shoes. Ours are really not that bad. The only problem with ours is they are not cut for the larger chested women, so small bottoms and then a HUGE top gives off a bit of an unprofessional, I am borrowing someones scrub's kind of look.

lpn intrance exam?
Call the school you are interested in and ask them which entrance test they give. From there you will know a lot better what you need to study. I had studied for one type of test and found out the school had given another type. Luckily it turned out to be the NET which was a bit easier then the one I studied for.

What supplies to take first day of school?
My school sent a letter and let us know to bring our Nursing Fundamentals books with us. During orientation they told us we would need paper, pen's, pencil's and highlighters. So not knowing if I would need all this the first day I just brought a notebook, the requested book, one pen, one highlighter, and one pencil. I ended up needing the notebook, pen, and requested book.

First Day.. Nervous
Wow what a day!! Nothing like I expected at all. We spent the morning basically going over everything we went over in Orientation then come after lunch we pretty much jumped right in. Tonight I spent the last 4 hours doing my homework. I am envious how a lot of you are so far and were able to do it. We had a 30+ page chapter to read and a workbook to complete. The workbook doesn't really match the book so its a bit hard because the terminology used in the book to the workbook is not the same. But I finally did it all, I am utterly exhausted and wondering how some of you single moms are doing it. If it wasn't for Pizza Hut tonight I don't think I would have ever managed to get it all done and get to sleep on time! 1 day closer to my goal

First Day.. Nervous
Thank you both very much!!! It's funny you said not to pick a study buddy to quickly as my fiance told me to go sit in the back of the class for the first two weeks and try to get a feel for the other students who are in the class before picking a study buddy. He said this way I will know what the other students or like and will not get stuck with someone who is not fully there for the education. I am 32 and a single mom, this is it, and I plan to make the most of it and make sure that I do well. I guess this is one of the major reasons I am so nervous. On a good note I have had everything ready that I need for the first day packed and ready to go for three days now! lol

First Day.. Nervous
So tomorrow is my first day and I am nervous. During orientation and CPR classes we got to meet some of the student's who will be in our class. My best friend had told me to make sure to find a good study buddy while in school (she went through the same course 7 years back) as this will make things a lot easier. Does anyone else have any tips?

Single Parent In Nursing School?!?!?
I am in the same boat as you, but I am a single mom of two kids. I choose to raise my own kids though, I couldn’t for one second fathom not tucking them in at night and not having them under my roof for an entire year, Heck I don’t like it for a weekend when they are away! My advice is to deal with it. Get a babysitter by day when you’re in school and study when your child is down for the night to sleep. If your 4 year old is anything like mine who doesn’t sleep you will find the time you need. Life has a way of working its way out when you want something bad enough, but sending your child off to live with someone else to make life easier on you during school just to me seems kind of wrong. I know its going to be hard and one heck of a struggle but in the end if you make it through this you can accomplish anything and you’re setting a very good example for your child. When the going gets tough you cant just ditch the kids…
