  1. I took Anatomy and Physiology II online over the summer (what was I thinking?!) and it was really time consuming! Our labs were virtual cadaver labs through this CD called APR (Anatomy and Physiology Revealed) and it had a workbook (by Broyles) that went along with it. The CD went over anatomy and physiology system by system and correlated with what we were reading in the textbook. I learned a lot, but only because I really forced myself to learn the material. We had online chapter tests and had to take each test three times, and they were different questions each time. I took Anatomy and Phy I in a real classroom setting and learned a lot in lecture, so I only had to put in a couple of hours of extra reading and studying per week. Since I took A&P II online, I had to teach myself everything and it took much more of my time. I guess that is to be expected though since I didn't have to meet in class or drive anywhere! I think it depends on your learning style. If you like to teach yourself things and can force yourself to set aside certain times on certain days to do the work, then I think you would do great in an online anatomy class. If you tend to learn the most from your professors and hate reading the textbook, then do not take anatomy online. I made an A, so it is possible! Good luck in whatever you decide and if you have anymore questions, just ask :)
  2. Sammyp056, I sent my scores to the nursing school I am applying to, but I didn't even tell them about the glitch. The deadline was Feb 1, and I don't find out anything until around May 21. Ugh...I hate this waiting!! Good luck to you and congrats on your awesome score! :)
  3. It's funny that you should ask that because I took the test on Jan 24 and the same thing happened to me. I received a 100% in math and an overall score of 91 and it also said "needed areas of remediation: essential math skills." This was the first thing that I saw when I opened the letter, and I thought I had bombed the math portion. Very weird and maybe it was some sort of cruel joke! I studied the same book too!
  4. Orlando Regional Medical Center has a Level One Trauma Center and Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Sick Children is obviously a good choice for L&D. Both are downtown, and you definitely do not want to live downtown. You also do not want to live anywhere near all the tourist attractions (Kissimmee, Celebration, etc.) because I-4 is a traffic nightmare anywhere near Disney. I live in Southeast Orlando. Everything is new and really nice in the Waterford lakes area, and you can purchase a 3 bedroom 2 bath house for $150,000 in Avalon Park which is near where I live. They are tons of young families in my neighborhood and it seems like a different world than downtown. Everything you could possibly need is at the Waterford Lakes Town Center. West Orlando is nice as well (Ocoee and Apopka-Northwest) and of course Windemere (Southwest) but who can afford to live in the same area as Tiger Woods!! Oh, and pay rates for new grads I have heard are $21-24. Tampa pays new grads more. Good Luck to you!!!
  5. Someone tried to PM me about where I received my private loans, and I cannot send PMs until I have 15 posts. I hope this person sees this message b/c I really do want to try and help!! To this person: My private loans are through Chase and my parents had to co-sign for me because I have never had a credit card and have no income. You can borrow up to $40,000 per year for any college related expense--tuition, room and board, transportation, food, etc. I received $7500 from Federal Stafford Loans for the year, $1000 in scholarship money, so I only borrowed $8000 in private loans this year. It is really easy to get private loans but the interest rates are higher (8% or higher, whereas federal loans are 6% to 6.8%), so try to only borrow what you really need. At the end of college your federal and private loans will be consolidated into one big loan, and you can choose to pay off your loan over a period of 5-20 years or even longer. I think the minimum monthly payment is $50, but you want to pay off as much as possible or you will only be paying interest and not the actual prinicipal. There are student loan calculators that will tell you what your monthly payments will be. The following websites were helpful to me. Chase and Citi are both good in terms of private loans. http://www.chasestudentloans.com/private-student-loan/private-student-loans.html https://www.studentloan.com/ I hope this helps. It's all so confusing...luckily my mom and brother are both in accounting and can help me out with money stuff I do not understand!!
  6. I have likewise been told not to work during nursing school if at all possible. I am starting a BSN program in two weeks, and they told us to work a maximum of 10 hours a week if we absolutely had too (like if we had dependents). Like someone else suggested, you should fill out a FASFA and then maybe consider private loans as well. Federal loan amounts will vary depending on parental income, whether you are claimed as a dependent or independent on a tax return, class standing in school, etc. Interest rates on federal loans are really low (mine are at 6.5%). Unfortunately, my private loan interest rates will be higher (around 7.82%) but still much cheaper than credit card interest rates!! Good luck to you!!
  7. Hi Jen! I know how you feel about wavering back and forth because that's how I am with nursing school. One day I want to do it, then the next day I find a hundred reasons not too (long hours with no break, too many patients and not enough nurses, narcissistic doctors, difficult patients, cranky family members, etc). Still I find that on the days I hate nursing, my fingers have a mind of their own and type "all nurses" into the google web search. My friends make fun of me because I still care about nursing, even when I don't want to continue in the program. It's like I cannot give up on nursing despite all the negatives I hear from nurses and on this board. I've already been accepted to nursing school and have two months to decide what to do. I don't have kids to worry about like you do, so I can't imagine how difficult your decision is. You have all your pre-reqs out of the way? If so, they are good at most schools for at least five years. Take time and think about it because I do know that nursing school is a full-time obligation as are children, but I have classmates who do both and succeed at both :) Well, good luck with this decision!
  8. Hey! I'm new to these boards as well. I'm not waiting anymore thank goodness...I received my acceptance letter in march from UCF. I have a few friends that go to Nova for pharmacy, dental (orthodontics), and nursing and all of them have nothing but positive things to say about their respective programs. The nursing program there had a 100% pass rate on the nclex this past year, which is highest in the state (even over UF)! So, I would definitely go there--although I know Nova is a bit pricey and my friend said the BSN nursing program is three years. Anyhow, I will keep my fingers crossed that you will get an acceptance letter soon :)
  9. Welcome to the forum! It's a great place to learn about nursing and has helped me tremendously!! 1.) I applied to USF (starting May 2008) and UCF (starting Aug 2008) for their upper-division BSN programs and was accepted to both 2.) College GPA: 3.88 3.) Pre-Rec GPA: 3.94 4.) No, I finished 3 years as a communications major and then switched to nursing. I know that I didn't apply to an accelerated BSN program, but I figure that maybe my info. will still apply to you somewhat. Good luck to you :)
  10. I was thinking of living downtown as well because I figured that if I have clinicals early in the morning I will want to live as close to the hospitals as possible...I need all the time I can get in the morning!! I like the sound of going against traffic too =)
  11. Thanks!! My overall GPA was a 3.88. Did you apply there too?
  12. I just got accepted into UCF's upper division BSN program starting August 2008!!! :) I was wondering where UCF nursing students live? I don't know if I should live around UCF campus or not since the hospitals are not close to campus. Thanks sooo much and congrats to any other nursing students who got accepted!! :)
