  1. Oh my gosh. I am so sorry you had to learn that way. HIPPA violation is taken very seriously. Take it as a learned lesson. Can you repeat the class over? If you want to transfer I suggest you start a new thread and include only the question how to transfer or start over to another nursing program. With me, I had originally applied in minnesota three years ago where I had lived. I did alot of my pre-reqs there. Never got a response from them as far as their nursing program. In the meantime I also applied in illinois. I got accepted there first. I moved to Illinois with my aunt to start the nursing program. That was a mistake. I suggest to start a new thread maybe others will help you that way. Good Luck God Bless

Good Evening. I need information on how to do resumes. I just moved, and would like to look into becoming a patient care technician at a local hospital. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.
  4. Nursing school is extremely challenging. Its challenging getting in and challenging through out. You just can't do the "get by" attitude. What will your patients think? You may need to do a self evaluation as to why you want to enter the profession. Is this really what you want to do? One of my pet peeves with a few of my classmates were the "get by" attitude and I am in it for the money. I worked extra hard, stayed up late hours. I can't remember when I had descent sleep since I started the program. I am taking a break, not by my choice. I will be back into the program by fall. Please ask yourself if this is really what you want to do. In my opinion, nursing is always opening up a book and wanting to know it. There is no room for "getting by." Nursing is a life time of learning!!!! The book is never closed! Good Luck and God Bless!
  5. If you are not sure about what is required of you during your first clinical, maybe you can ask your instructor for a check list. Or maybe your instructor has given you an evaluation checklist already and you can use that as your checklist. Know how to take vitals, auscultate for lungs sounds, give patient bath, proper documentation, using NANDA diagnosis when charting. Books to bring for clinical... nanda diagnosis, drug book, and the RN portable. Best books ever! Good Luck and God Bless!
  6. My sister and Aunt alongside with their classmates are suiing their school. They ascertained an attorney. They were never told about taking the HESI exam until about a month before graduation. Like most of you who wrote, they also graduated and got pinned. Than they took the HESI exam and failed. Another thing, most students were given preferrential treatment over other students. Some students in their class where given up to six chances to re take the exam while others were only given three chances. What is that all about??? I agree with what is being posted here. HESI should only be used as an assessment tool. It the students are failing than that would also show that the instructors are too. Its all about getting money and vanity... not helping the students. If the school advertises their NCLEX pass rate is 99%, that is necessarily not true. They only count the students who passed HESI and took the boards. In my sister and aunt's case, 80% (approx) who completed the course still has not passed HESI. The one who did pass HESI, quite a few of them took the NCLEX RN exam twice. Go figure. I understand everyone's frustration. My aunt is an MLPN, and works at a chicago university hospital. She is very respected there. She will be moving out to Minnnesota, she was offered alot more money at a trauma hospital and the cost of living is cheaper. My concern, people who say they will try to fight whether they have pass HESI or not because they strongly feel this is wrong. Have given up the fight. Most got busy working and making money. A few of my aunts classmates who said they would stand by here... did not. I am learning alot about this field. Its not so compassion, and it lacks team effort and loyalty. Where has the honor gone? I have been through alot myself with my nursing program. I just keep praying everyday, that something will change. Principle where did it go? Good Luck to Everyone! My prayers are with you! Maybe, you guys can tell us when you will be taking your HESI and we can all pray together for you. Keep fighting.
  7. If you go to the site discovernursing you can click on your state and click on the list of programs without a waitlist. Good Luck
  8. I remember my first bed bath. Looking back, it was kinda of funny. I was nervous, my patient was an older male. I made sure I had everything in hand. Lots of washcloth, very warm water, soap, and lotion. I proceeded with the bed bath. Making sure I didn't miss any part of his body. I combed his hair, brush his teeth. Than, I lotioned him all over. My instructor comes in, and she whispers to me. "You are giving him a bed bath, you are not here to try to give him a happy ending" I didn't get it at first, until my instructor pointed towards him. Needless to say, I was embarassed. My instructor was not happy. As a matter of fact, post conference she tells us that we are not there to give clients massages. And it should not take over thirty minutes to give a bed bath. Oops. She was my favorite instructor. My first year in the nursing program was wonderful. I hope you will have a wonderful experience. Good Luck True Story!
  9. Congrats. Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before your exam. No caffeine esp. coffee. Eat a good breakfast, like oatmeal. That seemed to help me. After the test, remember one thing... its over and give yourself a pat on the back. Good Luck
  10. My instructor gave me this sheet that states what it is. I hope this helps. The Nursing Math Titration is for you the nurse to calculate. Some drugs given IV are potent and may affect the patient quickly. Drugs are given by titrating the dosage. To ensure that you the nurse give the proper dosage of admininstration you must know how to calculate, an IV infusion pump is used. These machines are calibrated to deliver a specific amount in ml/hr. You the nurse is responsible for solving MCG/KG/MIN or HR, MCG/MIN or HOUR and INFUSION RATE. You will have an exam on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 promptly at 815am. Anyone showing up later than that will not be able to take the exam. And will receive a grade of Zero. This is the only thing she gave us. One of my classmates asked her if she can stay after class to show us. She replied with that's not something that she does. We went to the nursing tutor. After the second day with the tutor. The tutor told us that our instructor requested that she does not teach us titration. That we needed to dig for ourselves. I have been doing research here and on the internet. I really don't get it. I really appreciate any assistance. If you read my previous thread, I cannot afford to fail any exam. I am suppose to graduate in less than 14 weeks. Please HELP!
  11. Hello, everyone. I am looking for some assistance on how to do titration. Any great website? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I have a test on it next week. Math and I do not get along very well. Thanks:specs:
  12. Unfortunately, I cannot relate to that. But, I can understand it. Its always scary to go into something new. A new path is always scary. I would be worried if you weren't nervous in your new path. That is would be the concern. What you are going through is part of growing. You know what they say.... you can't have courage without fear.. they go together. Hold your chin up, finish, and go help some people with the talent GOD has given you. Tell yourself, what you are feeling is okay and their are others like yourself. Go forward and make us all proud. GOD BLESS. Good Luck.
  13. to: daytonite can you read my post "do you think this is fair" i really admire all of your posts. i stongly feel that all of your advices have been truthful. that is what i really need right now. i am confused about the events that is occurring at my school. i am really a good student and so are my classmates. we are all compliant until certain incidents occurred. if you can kindly read my comments and tell me what you think i should and shouldn't do. i don't want to make any wrong moves. i really need some professional advice. please! i need your years of experience on this one. i invite anyone who have the years of experience especially nursing instructors.
  14. Wow! I really thought it was just my classmates and I who are going through some very rough roads. I really enjoyed my first year, it was awesome. Its a different story now. My instructor is awful. Malicious. Threatening. I can even comfortably say racist. Yes, racist. She has done everything possible to fail ALL of my classmates and I. What can you do with instructors like these? I have a thread here, also. Its about what I am recently going through with my school. I am becoming curious about what is going on around nursing program . It is quite evident that instructors seem to have taken their power to educate for granted. Unfortunately, the only thing my instructor has taught me is power and politics. I thought we were going in the field of compassion, not itimidation. I hope we can ALL overcome the situations we are in. There should be some student nurse support group that we can turn to help students like ourselves. We have spent alot money and sacrifice to be treated in these ways. We too, deserve some respect.
  15. My first year was very expensive. Did not know than but do now is, if you can buy them on line do so. I bought from ebay or half.com. Some books my instructors have not yet used. I am playing on graduating in less than 14 weeks. What I have also learned is that by going on this site and researching what other students like to use. I think you will find a favorite supplemental book, like I have. Good Luck and God Bless.
  16. Wow! What school is this? My school has similar problems. I have an awful malicious instructor, right now. I've have great instructors prior to this one. Alot of my classmates are thinking about dropping out because of their grades. Honestly, its not their fault. In my case, it really is the instructors fault. I think a few of them are seeking for an attorney. What I am learning is that you must stick together for what is right. Listen to yourself and keep tabs of everything that is going on. I am greatly thankful for this site. They have taught me alot. I really would like to know what school this is. Is it in chicago? Mine is. Curious....
  17. As you stated: and, let's face it, pass rate is about the most important number for funding, accreditation, and marketing....it's no secret. So, even if you try to fight city hall, remember, it may actually decrease the value of the school to your college..."oh, why fund the nursing program? They had that horrible lawsuit last semester".....and you can be sure they're probably already revising future handbooks.... But...... In my sisters and aunts defense regarding this issue. They were never told about taking any HESI exam until a month before graduation. It was never in their policy books either. My sister took it four times, her friend took it 7 or 8 times. Other classmates took 6 times. While others like my aunt was permitted only to take it 3 times. Needless to say, my aunt did not pass to this day. Because of that she will not receive her diploma or the opportunity to sit for boards. She would have to attend another program and do it all over again. She did however, complete the nursing program with a GPA of 3.37. Her argument is why did other students were given more opportunities to take the exam and not her or others. They all worked hard for the same degree. The school breeched their contract, therefore, they did seek an attorney. I don't programs who chose to utilize HESI should utilize in a way so that students have a familiarity base with the exam. Hesi exams should be given at each midterm not just as an exit. You shouldn't be able to pass any nursing course unless you pass HESI midterm. I am glad we don't have HESI at our school. Its stressful enough, more than you can imagine. I wish everyone the best of luck. I keep studying, but there is so much to know. How do you retain it????
  18. Just to let know you. The first year of nursing one of my classmates submitted a On line CPR certificate. The chairman of the nursing department did not accept it. It has to be from the American Heart Association card and stamped with the instructors name. But it doesn't hurt to ask your instructor, or someone in the program about it. Ask the secretary in the office, they usally know everything. Good Luck. Need anything else let me know.
  19. I am sorry to hear that. I have approx. 15 more weeks before graduation. I am very excited to start working. The questions you should ask yourself are: Are there personal things going on, alongside with work? If so, is it reflecting with work? What do you like to do? Do you like to travel (travel nurse), solve mystery (forensics), love to read (research nurse), paper work (case management) there are so many other avenues for you to chose from. If its your co workers can you work on another floor, or specialized clinic? Maybe... cosmetic or doctors clinic. Could it also be, that you went to work right away after nursing school. My sister told me that I should take some time after I get my license to go to work. Like now, I have really no time for friends. Maybe you need to take time to breathe. You were probably sprinting all through nursing school. Take the Dr. Phil self assessment tool to re assess yourself. I will send a prayer your way. When I get down on the dumps, I watch Joel Olsteen. God Bless. Good Luck! You will be just fine. If you need anything let me or us know.
  20. Hello. I took care of a patient with a newly diagnosed dm. Teaching plan is basically what you would want to know if you were that patient. First, explain in layperson terms about diabetes, than go on and teach the patient taking insulin or oral. Time they should take it. Teach your pt. about the accucheck machine. Care of the patient, bathing, dry skin, barefoot, etc. When to call the doctor. Foods to avoid. Include pictures or pamphlets with your teaching plans. I guess thats really it, its like one of those pamphlets you get when you go to the doctors office. Except in your own words. I hope that helps. Good Luck! We are doing cardio right now. I am alittle inundated, but I thought I needed a break. I use this site as my break time.
  21. Yes, I think that is what I will do. I will answer 20 or so question a week. I really want to pass nclex the first time. We don't need to take an exit exam, but it is mandatory we take the kaplan review. I just feel like I am missing out on something. I am just a geek when it comes to reading and wanting to know it. I am one of those classmates that like to sit in front of the classroom so I don't miss out on anything. As soon as I get home, I re-write my lecture notes to further re inforce the info. Geeky, huh? What test taking techniques can you guys give me???? Thanks!
  22. I wanted to get familiarze with it. The teacher I have now it not giving me any rationales with her exams. I need test taking help. That is why I thought reading an nclex book and maybe doing the cd and answer questions, would help.
  23. rush and loyola have great nursing programs. its not an adn but a bsn. at loyola, however, if you have a ba in something else, they definitely want you. you will receive a few incentives also. go to their websites for more info. rush and loyola are expensive. thats why the instructors there are the bomb. rush another great school, teaching hospital. organized. busy. city colleges of chicago, i would recommend to stay away far away from them. there are alot of students who are suing them. the instructors and chancellors do not care about you becoming a skillful, and knowledgeable nurse. why, do you? they provide my aunt and her classmates with no nursing tutors, resource center closed, mock skills labs closed and no director of nursing. but yet the students still paid 450. for lab fees. that is based on my aunt's experiences there. i guess if you have several, several students suiing you, its best to find other schools. most of the city colleges school are not nln accrediated. its affordable tuition. maybe that why... you get what you pay for. i would rather pay extra just so i can have an instructor will wants to educate me and knows how to teach. prairie state college in the suburabs, i have heard everything good about this school. tuitions are reasonable a new school opened up in chicago...robert morris, have not heard anything about them yet. i also heard that kaplan will be having nursing program in the near future. do research. listen to current of past students. they will tell you the truth about the school and instructors. its okay to have a strict instructor as long as they know what they are teaching about. as long as is constructive and not destructive. wish you luck!
  24. My sister's friend and her classmate sought after an attorney for their case. Your student hanbook is considered a contract. If they did not comply with your contract than they breeched it. I think my sister and her classmates along with my aunt filed a complaint. I do belive there were over 20 of them. The school never stated on the contract about the HESI. Acutally, until a month before graduation. I watched both of them graduate and than they did not pass HESI. Now, the school won't give them their diploma or take NCLEX. My school does not HESI or ATI. Once we completed all nursing courses, we are done. Just keep studying. Document everything. Follow your handbook before filing any complaints. Use you lawyer as your advisement. Just keep studying, focus on that. Best of luck.
