  1. My experience with Ohio University Online Program - Because I didn't mind waiting several months, I was comfortable with waiting for OU to get my transcripts and education credential evaluation (Canadian College). I was notified that I was enrolled, but never contacted by an advisor or instructed about course set-up. The website/email account I was given did not list an advisor or give any instructions either. I was already anxious about time differences and the possibility of losing or delaying information in the mail because I am currently living overseas. I had expressed this to admissions personel when I applied. When I contacted OU, the lady I spoke with claimed she was my advisor. She said that the expectation was that I would enroll in courses independantly. I did not know what courses to begin with. Had all my courses transferred? Did I need to repeat any classes? Where do I begin? I asked her if any of this information had been sent out? She said yes. When I told her I hadn't received it, her response was that she would have figured that out in a few weeks and would have contacted me. Good to know!!! Needless to say, I have lost confidence in the process and am currently not spending large amounts of money on something I can't guarantee. It is sad because I do have the time to study as I am unemployed.

  3. I will be moving to the Fairfax area next month and was hoping someone could answer a few questions for me. Are they plenty of jobs there or are nurses being cut back too? Where are the best hospitals or clinics to apply? I have been out of nursing for awhile and need to take a refresher course. Has anyone taken the GM refresher course? Is so, is it good? Other recommendations? My husband insists that I should find a job first and see if the employer will assist with costs of the refresher program. That sounds good, but, in our current economic condition, I was afraid there would be less jobs and certainly wouldn't expect an employer to help with a refresher course. What do you think? Also, if the refresher course is pretty intense, would I want to be working also (considering my kids are also ajusting to a new area and school)? Thank you for any input!!
  4. I did pass!!! I should have announced earlier, but I wanted take a break from thinking about it I guess. So, in my case, the Kaplan predictors were accurate. I never took the ATI predictors.
  5. Well...I finally wrote the NCLEX. I got in the 70's with 2 Kaplan exams. I was told that if I got into the 60's, I would probably do fine on the NCLEX. Well, it was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I have no idea how I did. Not many of the questions seemed "easy". PLus, people say less questions is a good sign (75 that is). I had about 150ish. Also, I'm assuming it will take longer to get results over x'mas. What do you think?
  6. Next question...is IPPB a setting on a ventilator? Or, is it a separate machine altogether but simular to a ventilator? Thanks, Cindy
  7. Is PEEP a procedure that is completed at scheduled times with some machine? Or, is it an order for patients on ventilators? Also, I am reading about chest tubes. The book says, "The magnitude of the oscillation will also depend on how stiff the patient's lungs are and how much of the intrapulmonary pressure is transmitted to the plueral cavity. PEEP may dampen the oscillations." Huh. What oscillations are they referring to? Should I be observing something in the drainage system that is referred to as oscillations? I thought oscillations were something that high frequency ventilators produced to aid in exchange of gas in the alveoli? I'd appreciate any help, Cindy
  8. Is blood serum yellow then? (Sorry...I don't know why I'm not getting this!)
  9. What is the difference between plasma and serum?
  10. I've been searching the board website...found out that the test can be retaken in 45 days. I cannot find out whether there is a limit on the times that it can be taken and whether refresher courses are required if the test is failed after a certain number of times. Does anyone out there know?
  11. Did you have to take any additional courses after the board evaluated your schooling Shantas? How long was it after graduating when you took the exam? I'm really concerned about the length of time since college and since leaving work!!!!! I feel like I'm starting all over. Too bad there isn't some mini-nursing class to redo my education (more extensive than a refresher course but shorter and cheaper then actually redoing it!) Then again, some people say it isn't about learning everything, but focusing on some important areas and learning critical thinking skills so that I may apply that knowledge to various situations. What do you think?!!
  12. I think I have a pretty unique situation here... I am a Canadian-educated nurse who came to the states at a time (1995) when Texas did not require us to take the NCLEX, but instead just looked at our Canadian Board exam (CNATS). I had my first child in 1999 and chose to stay at home since Aug. of that year. Since that time, we have moved around a little and are currently in California. I have kept my TX license current through CEU's. I was hoping CA would grant me my license based on recipricity and then I could take a refresher course and return to work. However, when they see that I was educated in Canada, they require me to take the NCLEX!!!! So... after graduating in 1994 and not working for 8 years, I now have to take the NCLEX exam (which, ofcourse, I would have struggled with straight out of college!!)!!!! Where do I start? How can I possibly do this? I have a 6yo & an 8yo. I work 30 hours a week at their elementary school as a Health Technician. (It's a good job, but not nursing and the pay is bad.) Any advice would ne appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!
