I can only speak for my experience with the application process for UAB and Samford. To be competitive at either school you should have a B or above in each of your science courses. The GPA for entrance at Samford is probably about a 3.5+ cumulative GPA. If you make 1000 on the GRE, you will have no trouble. I know that both schools occasionally take outstanding applicants that have 900+ on the GRE. A 1000 on the GRE is best, but it's not impossible to be accepted with less. I took an advanced Pathophysiology class, repeated an anatomy class with a cadaver lab, and physiology prior to applying while working full time. My GPA was about a 3.5. I had many honors, extracurricular activities, and community service activities in my college experience. While working for serveral years at a large Level 1 center, I served on a hospital committee to help organize a large educational conference, and I was the leader for my unit's March of Dimes fund raising team. I think those activities helped to make my application stronger. Start by going online and checking out the application checklists for each school and go ahead and get started. Good luck!

The antidote for Reopro is infusing platelets. Reopro causes a qualitative defect in existing platelets. Reopro is a GP IIb-IIIa receptor inhibitor. However, the half life of the drug in the circulation is only 10 min. Therefore, transfusing fresh platelets will reverse the effects of the drug. You probably already know that, but this is some of the current information out there about Reopro.

I heard that phone calls were made Tuesday. Letters have probably already been sent. I am sure they will have alternates, so those who were not called, don't freak out. There is still a good chance for alternates.

After the interview last year, I felt good about it. But, many people did not feel as confident after the interview and were accepted. Did the clinical questions make you feel inadequate? Because, if that is making you feel not so good, just know that is understandable. I think that he tries to stump you to see how you will react. I am sure you did great, but may just be letting nerves get to you. I haven not heard when or if phone calls will be made or when letters will be sent. But Good Luck to you!

I am currently a student at Samford and interviewed last year. One interviewer asked me quite a few clinical questions last year. His questions were based on what kind of nursing you performed prior to the interview. For example, I was a cardiac nurse and he asked me cardiac related questions. So, don't worry too much about it, but do not freak out if they do ask a couple of questions. If you do not know the answer, just say you do not know. The worst thing you can do is attempt to pretend you know what you are talking about.

They take into account several GPAs. First and foremost they evaluate your math and science GPA. When I met with them in the past I was told that they do not like Cs in any science or math courses. Told me that a 3.0 was required for all math and science courses. Next they look at your last 60 hours and your cumulative GPA. When I applied, they averaged my grades all of the above ways and reported it with my interview invitation. All GPA calculations are taken into account. The first time I applied I did not receive an interview because of my Cs in Anatomy and Physiology which I repeated and made As in. After the repeat courses I received an interview. Even with the Cs in A & P my GPA was above a 3.0 before repeating courses.

I believe what 'DrugReptoNurse' was trying to say was that the lowest GPA that UAB granted interviews to this past year was a 3.4 That is what "cut off GPA" means. :)

Samford is not a doctorate program. Samford offers an optional DNP which can be completed online after you finish the masters in nurse anesthesia. So, if you desire a doctorate it can be completed at Samford and if you do not then you do not have to until it is required.

Just to clarify, Samford University is not a doctorate program. It is still a masters program. The doctorate is not required at this time. You would be applying to enter the masters program. The DNP is offered but it can be done online after you are practicing as a CRNA if you wish to have it. Samford is certainly an excellent option.

Final exam preparation: 7:00 am-- Wake up and get in the shower 8:00 am-- To the library with breakfast on the go Noon-- 30-45 minute lunch break 12:30-12:45 pm-- Back in the library 7:00 pm-- Dinner break 8:00 pm-- Library 2:00 am-- Leave library 3:00 am-- Go to sleep 7:00 am-- Start over again! You will wonder if you will make it through. But after finals are over and you did well, you will see the pay off. Good Luck!

I just finished my first semester at Samford University yesterday. I am trying to recover and catch up on my sleep! It was the hardest thing I have done in my life thus far, but it was definitely worth it. Samford is a great program and the program director is an incredible teacher! The atmosphere is great and the faculty are so genuinely kind. I cannot imagine being anywhere else. Good luck to you guys, I hope you get the opportunity to interview! :)

I attend Samford University. I applied at UAB and Samford, but chose Samford. I did not receive an interview at UAB the first time I applied and that was because of 2 Cs in undergraduate science courses. They were Anatomy and Physiology. I took those classes over again, made As, then got the interviews. I received interviews from all 5 schools I applied to after repeating the courses. From personal discussions with UABs program director, they say typically they do not consider applicants with Cs in prerequisite science or math courses. So, yes, retake them or you are likely not to be competitive and will waste valuable time putting off repeating the classes for a year while you wait and see if you get accepted. Just my recommendations.

I thought that ETS decided to postpone the changes that were scheduled for Fall 2007.

I have heard that several nurse anesthesia programs around the southeast are raising the cut off GPA for interviews (despite stating that a 3.0 is required) due to inflated GPAs related to online RN to BSN programs that the programs think are too easy. What harm would it do to go ahead and get your BSN to start with if you know that a masters degree is your goal? None.
