  1. Rob, I truly know where you are at as I too have been through the prescribed nacrcotic mess and nursing school. My school tried to remove me, get me to take a year off, and then fail me. They could do none of the above as my GPA was too high, I was too stubborn and my doctors wrote letters stating that I needed the medication and the meds did not impair my ability to function. I did agree to sign a contract with the school that on clinical days I would not take narcotics due to the legal implications it may cause for the school, the facilities and the nurses I was precepting with. It was very difficult as I also had 14 surgeries while in school and missed 1 clinical day and 3 class days. The school tried to take 10 points off my final clinical grade my junior second semester and I filed a grievance on the grounds that "pain is subjective and the nursing instructor had taken my pain and made it objective". I won 8 points back and still kept an A. Fight for what is right. I did but I also was willing to to make concessions. I graduated with my BSN and have been working as an ER nurse for 2 1/2 years now. I am on major pain meds still but refuse to take them on the days I work, my patient's lives are too important for me to make a mistake with. Best of luck to you!
  2. I have an interview with PrimeCare Medical and am wondering how they are to work for. Has anyone worked for them? I am considering the switch from ER to correctional nursing and would appreciate any info you can give me. Thanks.
  3. Anal glaucoma - can't see my a** coming to work today
  4. I have a few faves to add... 1. Guy and girl both had genital piercings and arrived via ems attached. Pretty funny to see 2 people on gurney. Nothing a wire cutter didn't help. 2. Had a pt. show up with a birthday candle inserted in his member. Thought he would be creative for his wife's birthday. "that one takes the cake". 3. Young lady came in complaining of an ear ache x 2 wks. Stated "I had dental work 2 wks ago and I think the dentist poked my ear drum when he was numbing my gums."
  5. I will try to make this brief but am wondering if anyone has ever heard of this. My coworker started having vertigo 4 weeks ago then progressed into left arm ataxia, garbled speech, headaches, listing gait to the left, and unclear thought processes, double vision and a few more sx. She saw a neuro and had an MRI. Small lesions were found on the right side of her brain base at level C-2. She was told initially it could be blood clot, MS, abcess or tumor. After 1 day of nafcil q 6*, rocephin 2 gms q 24, and metronidazole 500 mg q 8* she became clear headed and her speech became clear. She was transferred from our facility to a much larger facility for further evaluation. The neuro and internist think it is a brain infection she picked up at work and are culturing her csf. Has anyone ever heard of this?
  6. Victoria's secret microfiber bikini's in tan or white. No ride, no crotch seam and very comfortable!
  7. The 25 yof c/o "I had a zit in my ear on Monday and I popped it and now my neck is swollen. Do you think the zit juice drained into my neck?" "Is your throat sore?" "yes" Same day another female in her twenties: I had some dental work done and when the dentist numbed my gum with the needle I think he hit my eardrum, b/c I have had an ear ache ever since. My favorite frequent flyer that I see at least 3 times a week called EMS b/c he had been hit by a car 60 miles from the hospital in his home town. Upon arrival to the ED he tells me that he walked into a parked car and needed a ride home.
  8. I heard a really good work excuse today... "I can't come in to work b/c I have anal glaucoma." "What is that?" "anal glaucoma...I can't see my butt coming to work" Anyone else have any good ones? :chuckle
  9. I had a meeting with DON today with charge nurse present. Told exactly what I witnessed. They stated the other RN's story was almost identical to what I witnessed. I had to file an interdepartmental incident report that was reviewed by the Director of the ER. Saw the director out in public tonight and was informed that immediate action has begun on this incident. He told me we would discuss it further on Monday and a formal investigation would ensue and the doc would be severly reprimanded and not with a slap on the wrist. The ER director is a fair man with a large conscience who doesn't put up with poo from anyone and has very high standards of patient care. Will keep you informed. Thanks for all the support and advice.
  10. The patient was in a 90 degree position with her head bent down over the emesis basis, so he did not pull her into position but picked her up off the bed and slammed her into the back of the bed. We tried several times with her head held in place before the doc came in...once the tube passed thru the nares she would shake her head and body to fight it from going any further, therefore there was nasal trauma in the way of bleeding. She could not be treated with narcan d/t her taking seroquel, and other psych meds. No narcotics or ETOH in her system when tested. She did not strike the staff nor threaten us in anyway of harm to us. The doc was irked that we had not accomplished what he ordered done. I am not upset with what you are saying but his behavior was totally out of line. I too have fought with combative pts. to prevent them from injury to themselves as well as staff (11 people to hold a 125 lb man down from hurting us, while in 4 points restraints...another story another time)
  11. Help! Tonight I was assisting a nurse in dropping an NG tube. Patient was combative to the fact that it hurt. "Yes dear, they do hurt but we must do this since you took 70 or so miscellaneous pills." Attempted several times to drop the tube, she kept closing her throat. Dr. was informed as was the whole ER by her screaming, He walked in the room, began yelling..."we are going to do this one of 2 ways, My way or Your way. You can fight all you want (the pt. had her head in her hands over emesis basin, crying). Since we can't do it your way will we do it my way"...he proceeded to grab her by the hair and the chin, picked her up off the bed and slammed her back into the back of the bed and she is screaming bloody murder. The other RN and I backed away from the bed and said "I am outta here, we are not going to do this to her". We informed the charge nurse of the incident. Now what? Do we go to the DON and the head of the ER? THis doc is not a regular staff doc, he works PRN shifts. Can I be held liable for his actions on the patient? The pt. never said anything and never did get the NG tube but several charcoal slurries. I was and still am very upset by this incident. I am sure I will be called in and questioned about this and will not lie for the dr. I am here to help the pt. (no matter if they deserve a diploma in stupidity) not hurt them or be an accomplice in assault and battery. Any one else ever been witness to this and what happened to you or what did you do? :angryfire
  12. Had a 900# lady admitted during the night and I had the honor of cleaning her up the next day. While bathing her I had to lift skin folds to get the foulest smelling stink off her. I lifted her breast and there was a dead kitten in the fat fold. I nearly aspirated on my vomit. It must have been there for a while because it was infested with maggots.
