  1. I worke on 6E Cardiac stepdown and 4E CHF. My manager was great about working around my class and clinical schedules. You need to speak to the nurse recruiter, Deborah Wilson. You can apply online. just visit the website, http://carealliance.com/. She will set up interviews for you with every floor you are interested in, you meet with each of them and rank your preferences, that way they can make a good match for the NM and you. Even if you don't end up working on that floor as an RN, it is great experience. Parking is not a problem, Roper provids free parking for employees.Roper St. Francis
  2. I am also in Charelston, just graduated from MUSC. I'm working at Roper, started right before my last semester as a nurse extern. I thought the NE experience was great. You only have to work 4 hours on a weekend per month to keep your job and they are really flexible working around school schedules. I will be working as an RN on the floor where I externed. Good luck to you!!
  3. Welcome!!! Where do you plan to go to school?
  4. Could you post your list of programs and websites? Thanks!
  5. I am very interested in research and only recently learned about this position. I will graduate next month and work on a cardiac floor as a GN. (I noticed a postion posted that only requires one year experience as an RN, that looks very interesting as a study co-ord.) I'm wondering...for those of you who became a study co-ordinator without much floor experience-how much patient contact do you get? Do you still feel like a nurse? Etc... Thanks!
  6. Where can I find information about the 9 month program? Thanks!
  7. There is a South Carolina section in the disussions. You may find some help there. I am in Charleston, so I'm not much help. Have you tried Palmetto Health? http://www.palmettohealth.com Good Luck!
  8. Perhaps the working guy in the middle would be better off with more affordable insurance? Perhaps if the government had an interest in keeping healthcare costs down (preventive care) with government run insurance, you would not have to choose to not go for your follow-up appt.
  9. Quote from Dazzle 256 "Most of the time our ER looks like a Drs office...runny noses....tummy aches they've had for 3 mos. We do have clinics that do take care of the people without insurance but guess its not convenient to go to." People with insurance go to the doctor when they have these problems, not to the ER. How can you say this doesn't effect nursing?! Those working in the ER are getting bogged down with these patients, when they should be dealing with emergencies only. It also costs the hosptial money, they don't just get treated for free, the hospital eats it. As for free clinics, some of these people don't know about them, others do. For those that do know and use the ER instead, do you know what it is like at a free clinic? They may wait for hours before being seen. They are made to feel like thier time isn't as valuable as someone who has insurance. I'm not talking about people who just don't want to work. I'm talking about people who are employed and are working like crazy just to pay their bills. They get sick and put off a doctors visit because they can't afford to take the time off from work to sit for hours waiting to be seen in the free clinic. As a result, when they do seek treatment, they are sicker and harder to treat. (Read: more expensive/bigger drain on the system.) How can anyone say this doesn't effect nursing. If you can honestly say that you aren't looking at the larger picture.
  10. A large South Carolina University coach had the entire basketball team get the flu shot. (Read healthy 18-23 year old males with no RF).He stated that he wanted his team to stay healthy so they would have the best chance to win. This despite seniors in our states capital waiting in day long lines for the chance of a flu shot. (if it runs out before they get their turn, so sorry.)
  11. Jeanie, My advise (without knowing all your details) would be to get whichever degree you can get the quickest. If that happens to be BSN, great! If that happens to be ADN, great! Do you plan to go back to school for advance degree? Do you want to work in a place or position that requires a BSN? If not, just go for whichever program is the most convenient. Even if you do plan to go back to school, some progams will accept any Bachelors degree + ADN. Also, MUSC has an RN to BSN program, with most or all of the courses offered online, so you can always get the ADN and get the BSN while you work. The nice thing about MUSC is that it is an State University, so fees are lower than other online degrees and Finaid is available. Best of Luck! :balloons:
  12. To scramble eggs in micro: Spray* bowl w/nonstick (low-fat) spray, put eggs in bowl, scramble w/fork. Micro (depending on microwave) 30 sec or so, scramble w/ fork, put back in for 30 sec. Increase time w/more eggs. *very hard to clean if you don't spray-no prob @ all if you do.
  13. Everyone has given good suggestions. My problem has always been timing. When you get up as close to last minute as possible, stomach doesn't know it's awake yet. I scramble eggs in the microwave, put them btw 2 pieces of toasted whole grain (usually rye) bread, add some chz, microwave another 10 sec to melt and bring it in the car. Wrap it up like they do in a fast food rest, so you can eat from one end w/out everything falling out the other. Also, it stays warm for ~ 20 min because it's wrapped well and microwaved after assembly. If you're still not hungry in the car, just warm it up later! Takes ~ same amt of time as instant oatmeal.
  14. The biggest hospital in our area doesn't have the flu vaccine. They ordered from the company with the problem. A lot of the area MD offices did the same. My 6 year old and I both have asthma and haven't found a doctors ofc w/the vaccine. While healthcare providers can't seem to get the vaccine, Piggly Wiggly and Publix (grocery stores) have it and administering it to anyone that can pay. Perhaps the vaccine should be sold only to healthcare unless there is excess. After all, do you want the hospitals short staffed because all the employees got the flu?
  15. Hilarious! I have heard people complain about how nurses are protrayed in this show, but I think MDs would have the same complaint; they are not real. I think that's the point! It's a comedy-great show! :rotfl:
  16. RedVaz replied to tmiller027's topic in General Nursing
CONGRATS! That is the all time best letter to read in the world!!!
  17. The policy is the same with our honor code. Basically, if you know someone is cheating and don't report it, then you are also guilty by association. Obviously knowing and not doing something about it is bothering you or you wouldn't have posted. Weigh the pors and cons. I don't want to work with someone I can't turn my back on and I don't want my loved ones cared for by someone who cheated their way through school.
  18. Brandon, If you are already on the waiting list at Florence I would not recommend switching to TTC. The waiting list is 2-3 years after you have completed your prereqs and formally applied to the nursing program. I would finish your degree in Florence, then move here-you might even get an an employer to pay for relocation.
  19. High school does not determine the rest of your life. I know it seems like the most important thing right now, but it's not. I DROPPED OUT of highschool and got my GED 2 years later. I then waited another 8 years to go to college. Guess what-I got right into a 4 year school-I didn't even have to start out in a technical college. Even if I did have to go to a community college it wouldn't have mattered, because there are so many different ways you can take to become a nurse. I finished up all my pre-requisites for my BSN with a 4.0-straight A's! I am now attending one of the best schools in the state and I am doing very well. If I can do it, anyone can-If they really want to. If this is something you really want to do, don't let anyone hold you back. YOU CAN DO IT!!!
  20. JimD, I am in my first semester (in Charleston) and I'm becoming interested in Peds. I'm hoping that next semester I can get a job as an extern. Any advice? What is a nurse manager looking for? I'm willing to work 3rd shift, I've worked with children before (but not in a medical capacity) and at the end of this semester I will have completed Fundamentals. What kinds of things make an applicant stand out?
  21. In Charleston we have an ADN program at Trident Technical College http://www.ttc.edu. There are many hospitals here, so getting a job at a hospital while going to school should be pretty easy. I just started the BSN progam downtown at MUSC and I don't dare work-too scared I'll fall behind! Good luck!
  22. I am shopping for a PDA. Our CON strongly recommended buying one and suggested the Tungsten C. The C seems to perform well, but I figure that if I am going to spend that much, I might as well be able to listen to MP3 in stereo, which the Tungsten C won't allow. (I really don't need WiFi either) I have researched and really only found the T3 comparable as far as operating system, speed and memory without blowing my budget out of the water. What I want to know is; do you like it? Is it worth the money? Would you recommend it? Do you actually use it for school/work? I know I'm paying extra for the memory and speed right now, but I'm hoping I won't outgrow it. Also, what exactly do you need to do play MP3's? Do you need anything besides the expansion card? PLEASE HELP!!!
  23. Getting away from 501 makes it all worth while. Get this-there are alternate routes in Charleston!!!! Can you believe it?!! Also, unlike Myrtle Beach, everything isn't always about what the tourists are going to think or how the tourists will be affected. Nice to have the community focus at least a little on the actual residents. Charleston is refreshing after so many years of MB.
  24. Hi SCNuttyMeg! Welcome to the SC board! RedVaz :) :roll
  25. Hi Catz & twinRN04! Catz- I'm starting the accelerated BSN program at MUSC in January. I haven't any actual nursing classes. I haven't even taking CPR yet-waiting until it's closer to school-then it won't expire while I'm studying for a final exam! MUSC has an RN to BSN program and an online RN-BSN. I know Charleston Southern has a BSN program, but I don't know if they offer an Rn to BSN. However, if you get a job at MUSC i know you will get a discount on at least the application fee for the program-perhaps they will help you out paying for classes too. You can check on job openings at MUSC through their site: http://www. musc.edu, just click on human resources. Good luck! I'm so jealous of you guys! Already graduated or graduating in spring 04! I haven't even started classes yet, just finishing prereqs and i won't even graduate until may 2005. That seems so far away!!!!!! Catz, How did you end up in England?! I've never even been out of the country-not that I wouldn't love to. Good luck on moving back here. The coast is great-but I'm not a big fan of SC gov't. Being on the coast is great enough that I'll put up with it though. Like mawbellRn2Bn04 said, you would be amazed at MB if you haven't been there sinceyou were a kid. I lived there from 1995 to 2003 and it is very differnt from when i first got there. Anyway-welcome to SC, hopefully you will be here someday soon in person!
