For Inactive Nurses desiring to return to the field
I Know The Paradox Well. Online Resume's Get Responses But If You Haven't Been Active For A Couple Years You Are Treated As If Your Memory Has Been Erased. I Have Had 35 Years Experience And After A Retirement Of Only 18 Months , The " Recent And Active " Lines In All Adverts Deem Us Unfit. My Only Suggestion Is To Look For Adverts For Gn's, Will Train. Some May Even Consider Nursing Homes In All Their Varieties, There Are 3 To 4 Times As Many As There Are Hospitals In Some Areas. Teaching Also Comes To Mind. If You Have A Bachelors Degree ,lvn Or Rn School. Also Teach Cna Classes With No Degree But Adequate Experience. Online Is Problematic, Go To The Hospital, Talk Directly With Human Resourses. Call Up Old Nursemates, See What And Where They Are Working And Who They Know That Can Help. I'm No Expert And Have Gotten Choosey In My Old Age So I Don't Take Some Of My Own Good Advice But You Will Have To Decide For Yourself What You Will Settle For. Good Luck

Remember to ask questions even the one you may think are too simple or dumb ones. If your facilitator is well chosen you will do well. If not ask for another, speak up. Try to relax and don't be a smart ass, you can learn from everyone if you remain open to new knowledge.

Anyone go from ICU to med-surg?
Icu Isn't For Everyone, And As A New Nurse I Can See Where Your Anxiety Comes From. What Was Your Reasoning In The First Place, Fewer Patients Per Nurse Ratio? Nursing In General Has A Learning Curve. Icu's Learning Curve Is Usually Based On Already Having Substantial Floor Experience.. You Placed Your Self In A Demanding Situation By Not Having The Floor Experience First. Yes, You Will Have To Learn A Different Set Of Time Management Skills For The Floor But One Can't Be Afraid Of Going To Work Because Your Skills Are Not Yet Up To Par For The Task At Hand In The Unit. Your Experience In The Unit Will Be Your Blueprint For What You Need To Learn On The Floor Without The Perceived Life Or Death Struggle Of The Unit Hanging Over You. So Go Back And Pick Up The Experience You Need And Trannsfer Back Later When You Have A Stronger Nursing Base.
