Did any of you read, hear about, see on t.v., the report last week that ranked Texas 3rd lowest in the country ? I could hardly believe it. I think they said Mississippi and Arkansas, or was it Mississippi and Oklahoma tied for 1st and 2nd lowest positions, and Texas was third.................. Mon Dieu !

TPAPN:a Four Letter Word?
Sorry to take so long to get back on this thread. I have been very very busy trying to keep cool in this coastal heat and humidity. Well, guess this thread just goes to show there aren't any McAllen nurses on this board. Don't any of you know a McAllen nurse to ask ? Well, I guess Texas is big ! The RED APPLE DAY Sale is held one Saturday each month at Macy's Department store. Don't any of you all have a Macy's in your town ? The RED APPLE DAY Sale is a Major Event in the city that has a Macy's..... incredible bargains the whole day....... If only those nurses who were working could GO SHOPPING !

Any point to working in a bad hospital while in school?
I lived in a small town once....same as yours. The locals said they ""wouldn't take their dog there !"" Now, 30 years later, it is considered one of the best in the state and receives all kinds of awards. Yes, you can learn a lot. "" Bad "" hospitals and "bad " nursing homes, etc. get that reputation from people who lower their standards of care and caring. Commit yourself to caring about your patients, by going "the extra mile" for them, by communicating with them..... listening, etc. Try to see that the docs orders are carried thru and communicate with the docs, be available to them....this doesn't make you a "" hand maiden."" You will learn and benefit.

I quit my job.
SICU Queen : Well written. I hear your pain and disappointment. It is sad. I can identify with your feelings when you write of giving 1000 % and the return is zilch. I spent 11 years in SICU and 3 years in adult burns. The only return is in knowing, at the end of each shift, I left my patients in a better condition than I found them. There is a immense personal pride and gratification in that. That is the return. Personal pride and dignity, the knowledge that I did my best. This kind of knowledge is the kind that will serve you and your patients in your new endeavor. It also keeps one off the anti-depressants. It feels good to look in the mirror and know that many many people recovered and moved on - because of my dedication and my caring interventions. The case management patients will need you just as much. It is a harsh cruel world out there when you are disabled, ill, and trying to transition out of the hospital. Good Luck.

New Med Surg Nurse Drowning
Always ask ! Always ask either a friendly, helpful, and approachable nurse, or your charge nurse. It is so much easier for all the staff (and your patients,) if you ask first . It is ten times more difficult to attend to a mistake that is made. Ignore the rude nurse. She was a newbie once upon a time too. It takes a while to " put it all together".... you will manage it. Your teachers at school had faith in you or they would not have allowed you to proceed. So, have confidence in yourself. After your shift, review your day. Try to analyze your strengths and weaknesses. Maybe jot them down. It will become clear to you where you need to review, or ask questions, or volunteer for new experiences . Hang in there !

ever been accused of abuse?
I worked with a nurse about seven years ago who was accused of abusing a patient. The nurse was fired. EVERYONE on the unit knew she was innocent. She was the best nurse. But, she was an older nurse. And, the hospital was in the initial stages of a big layoff. Their economics were suffering. They wanted to get rid of as many older nurses as they could. (They can hire 2 new grads for what the older nurses cost them - per hour.) The nurse was totally devastated. Naturally. Everyone was wondering how the manager came up with that excuse to fire her. A month later, I was fired on "alleged drug abuse." Ha Ha...................me............................................. purer than the pope........................................as I have said for over 20 years. don't drink, don't smoke, don't do drugs,........................... don't _ _ _ _ ................................. But, they saved lotsa bucks gettin rid of me...................... If they wanta get rid of you, they will. Nurses, especially new ones, don't understand that you can be fired for ANY reason, all it takes is a manager wanting to improve her budget, or a co-worker who is miffed at you. You are outa there, without recourse, but a peer review, with your manager heading up the peer review committee. Good luck to you. Wish I could help. Just know you aren't the only one....................... The hospital I used to work at is having problems again. The newspaper says they will lay off 1000 employees. It is to their financial benefit to fire nurses instead of laying them off. How many will be fired before the layoff..... especially if they are nearing the time of being vested ? How many will be senior nurses charged with patient abuse and drug abuse ?

I have heard too many horror stories about lap chole's with complications !"" True ?

Anyone Working At A Tenet Hospital?
Just wanted to update. I just completed a 16 week contract at a Tenet Hospital, and it was one of the best hospitals I have ever worked in. The management was super to the staff.... they were organized, respectful and appreciative of their staff. Also , staffing was 4-1. If it hadn't been so far from home , I would have stayed on.... I was asked to come on board. So, just wanted to add this note. Some hospitals are inferior to others, and I believe that is within all hospital corporations. The Tenet experience for me was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay positive !

Area/speciality with most "knowledge"
From experience, I would say a cardiovascular intensive care unit. I spent 9 years in one and learned more than one thing , EVERY DAY I WORKED !

2 new valves and a triple by-pass and hasn't woke up... !!
One of my distant neighbors had this surgery a week or so ago.... how common is this ?? The docs after the 11 hour surgery told the family, "" the only problem we had was............................... we had some trouble getting his heart started again after we took him off the bypass."" "" Everything else went very well."" ............................................. And, tomorrow, they plan to take the pt for a CT of the head, "" to see if there is anything there that would give us more information on why he isn't waking up."" How common is it that the docs have problems with getting the heart beating again after one has been on bypass?? This is scary...... and everytime you go in for a heart cath they want you to sign the form to have a bypass if needed.... This pt is fluttering the eyelids only.............. nothing else..... family thinks he is still under the influence of the anesthesia................... will keep you posted....................let me know your thoughts on this..... Do they "" wake up"" 10 days later ? ? ? or a month later ??/??

Is your hospital DIRTY ??? Does housekeeping clean the empty room and bath in
There was a talk-radio show on a couple of days ago. One of the docs said there are > 400,000 deaths in the U.S. annually due to nosocomial infections. I plan to research that on the computer when I get off here... research that statistic. Anyway, one of the other docs said he thought that was a high number, and his opinion was: "it must be the smaller, rural hospitals that are experiencing the nosocomial infections in high numbers, as the hospitals here in Houston all have the latest methods (METHODS?) ha ha) for maintaining clean hospitals." I wanted to call in.........................but couldn't.... didn't............if I want to keep my job.
