  1. Who do you work for? Do you have to provide your own funds to your new assignment? Do you have to pay your own deposits for apartments/hotel rooms and the first and last months rent yourself? I am currently (as I write) driving toward CA for my very first travel assignment. So far all the money has come out of my pocket. With promise of reimbursement. I am with Travel Max.......I have had to find my own housing also. Is this customary? I am going to work in a prison Corcoran State prison in CA. I live in Illinois. The trip out is going to cost around 1000$. And they want to reimbursement 1000.00 round trip for travel. Something about this just does not smell good to me. I want to make traveling my full time job but I am getting scared. I have no one to ask questions of and feel like I am floundering around. If anyone can help please do. My assignment starts Wednesday, I haven't even talked to anyone at the prison yet. Scary isn't it. Please Help. Graybar Hilton.
  2. Ok....here is the deal. Yes, you need to lose 'nancy nurse'. Inmates are manipulative and can get you in terrible trouble if you try to be their friend. After 8 years in the joint my motto is " timely, appropriate, and professional health care always". I maintain a respectful attitude, and treat them like human beings, otherwise I do my 8 and hit the gate. I love corrections, and am just now going back to it after a 2 year break. I have pined for it, and missed it very very much. Your assessment skills will be challenged each and every day in a 1000 different ways.......revel in the challenges. The autonomy will keep you on your toes. Watch out for the officers (guards) too. they can be worse than the inmates. Hope all goes well for you. Regards, Gray Bar Hilton
  3. Thanks Suzanne, who do you work for? I am looking for corrections only and need some advise about companies. Any suggestions? Any helpful hints about what to look for, ask about or information I make sure to find out about? Thanks in advance, Graybar
  4. I worked for Wexford from 1999 to 2003, how would you compare them to other vendors you have worked for? I am considering a traveling position in corrections only, has anyone done this and if so how was it. I have heard bad things about PHS in IL, they and CMS were kicked out for underbidding........sound familiar? Just curious about other folks experiences. Thanks, Graybar
  5. Who do you work for, that you were able to take a virtual tour of your private housing? I am just starting out and have a company who is looking for a contract for me in California. I will only work corrections and it has to be warm........so far it has been one month now, and it is getting close to my availablitity date and no contract, should I be concerned??
  6. Can anyone tell me what my husband and I would need to bring to an assignment, other than our clothes and the dog? Are most of the placements in apartment complexes? If so what do you do for furniture? Do we need linens, and in places like L.A. what do you do about parking? This is my first hitch at traveling, although I have been a nurse 29 years. I will only be working in Corrections and my only condition is that it be warm. Any advise or helpful hints would be very appreciated. Graybar
  7. I am a certified nurses assistant instructor both on the high school vocational level and the community college level. I have been teaching two years, after having been in corrections for 7 years. I am grateful to find a Nursing Educator forum on this web page. I will be glad to bounce policies, procedures and overall rules and regs off of anyone willing to talk. I am currently enrolled in a totally online curricula as well for my BSN. I will be done in Dec. Then on to the MSN, so that I can teach nursing students, with the goal of an online program facilitator in the fairly forseeable future. Greetings to this forum.
  8. The LPN issue is one I am researching now. I have found many states that allow LPN's to get IV certification and perform that task. Most do it with the utmost professionalism. Check out the nurse practice act for your state. Or ask her conversationally where she obtained her certification. Be sure of the facts before you act. The RN that did not see that her patient was turned is responsible, she was negligent pure and simple. If she does not want the role of supervisor then she should pass on it. The Med tech deserves to be disciplined, as does the RN. Perhaps a better solution would be to put them in bed, and leave them for several hours in one place.....I have found that as an educator any thing that you can do to make the student feel "like they are there" is the best teaching tool. There are so many little tricks you can do with the dementia patient to help them during an agitated episode. The best one, can sometimes be giving them some small little goodie to eat. Fingerfood, tasty and tempting. It is a symbol of trust and fills one of the most basic needs. Watch carefully for choking though. I have found that if you put a snickers bite in your mouth, then offer one in the spirit of hospitality, it works. I am with the others though, figure out the indicators and identifiers, watch for time, event and instigating factor. Then act accordingly. The little old lady in the post, who was afraid of the towel men.....was probably put off by a male orderly taking someone to the shower. Bless her heart. The way the nurse described his action was great. I hope that you continue on, prosper and move others to join the great profession of nursing.
  9. Regretably jails and prisons are nothing alike Be it security or whatever. I thought I would never get thru all the papers. The worst part was the drug screen.......a female actually stood in the stall with me and watched me pee. I was so humilitated. But I understand why they do it. I know there are lots of ways around a drug screen although I don't know what they are. I work for the prison system, but have done jail nursing. The prison was the one that was so intrusive. I am glad I did it. I love my job. I wouldn't give it up for anything. If you want the job then fill out the papers. I am curious as to what laws our president has signed into effect that affect the prisons and their workers. Have I missed something?
