have you ever "written up" yourself in an incident report?
Yes. Just wrote myself up on Friday as a matter of fact. Wrote myself up once about 6 yrs ago and got fired for it tho. If I had that one to do over I may not have, to be honest. I had been written up for missing a mandatory meeting, (facility was in trouble with state inspections and having mandatory meetings daily for about 10 days, requiring night shift to come in during sleep hours), and had been written up for inconsiderate care of a patient. (charted that a woman had been placed on bedpan by this RN and voided very small amt and by the time this RN reached the door was asking for bedpan again and this RN refused) Her careplan included attention-seeking behavior and being a rather new nurse I failed to also chart that she was on a toileting schedule and was reminded of this. Nurses had just voted in a union tho, and eventually most were let go for one reason or another. Anyway I gave 6 units of Regular insulin instead of NPH and then sought out the oncoming supervisor at 6:30 am, and we called the Doc, who just said to make sure she ate breakfast and check BS later (I also gave OJ) and the next day when arrived at work, I was fired as this was such a "serious, and potentially harmful med error". First time I was ever fired from a job. And I took responsibility and was accountable for my error. I didn't have to, as no one was there, but I did. So, on Friday as I'm doing updates @ my LTC, I see that I have not one but 2 transcription errors on THIS months MAR's. Left off promod and Vitamin C. So wrote me up again. Will I get fired? Don't know, don't care. Had to do it. I have to beg every month for help to do these updates and do not have the time to 2nd check (7-3 is supposed to). I have between 53-57 residents, and I'm worn out. Am seriously going to look for another job this month, although I fear any in LTC will be the same if not worse.

sleeping staff
Happens all the time where I work. No one seems to care but me. But recently wrote 3 CNA's up for sleeping and they all got 2 days suspension. Next event to be fired. The behavior has been repeated and now I alone (the other 3 unit charge nurses tolerate this and I occasionally find them with head down at station asleep) will have to be the one to have a 62 year old women fired. Although I have told her that it would be her fault and not mine. Most CNA's in the building don't want to work with me because of this and other requirements I enforce, ie. lateness, leaving the unit in the AM 7-10 min. before shift is over, without even telling me, and on and on. Sleeping at work is my biggest peeve. And they expect it's some kind of right. I will tolerate sleeping on breaks and maybe an extra 5 or 10 min. over, but that's it. I'm trying to decide if I'm even going to stay here or look for another job, so I am letting some of it go, but if it is repeated again someone is going to get fired. I am so tired of this.

Still encountering racism on the job
I come from a fairly predjudiced background. I can still remember the huge community swimming pool our family used to frequent and the day it was announced that it would be desegregated. My Dad stated we wouldn't be allowed to go anymore. (it must be illegal for your pool to segregate) I am not predjudiced toward any race, but need to say, I had to work at it to overcome things I had been brought up to believe. I am sorry for what you endure. I work at a LTC facility and often hear derrogatory remarks toward blacks and nurses of other races from the residents. It hurts me deeply. I must also say that I hear many of the black nurses making comments about the Philopino (sp) nurses. Why can't we all be just human beings? There are so many crisis in this world today. Why do people still dwell on race issues. I no it will not go away, but I wish it would. While some people will make those remarks to you and they hurt. please remember that there are people who respect you for what you are, another human being.

On sabbatical?
Just posted this on https://allnurses.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27383, but wanted to also reply to this thread. Like the bumper stickers. Could this forum use the revenues? for selling the bumper stickers or caps? How did we as nurses, probably the largest group of professionals ever allow nursing to come to this? Do coal miners work this hard? Not to be able to take a bathroom break or lunch or even a drink at times and feel selfish for the thought? I know nurses who take work home to do. unpaid work. Aren't there laws about this? Sorry, I get all fired up. :angryfire

Wart Question
My son had a wart under his nose and picked it off. Never came back. My daughter-in-law uses "bug juice" on the hemangioma on my grandaughters knee, which seems to be helping reduce it.

Sewing your own scrubs
I tore apart my favorite scrubs and make my own. Get alot of compliments. I usually make about 4 when I get started. I like a set in sleeve and 2 deep pockets with side slits and a breast pocket. I used to work in a sewing factory years ago and that comes in handy. Just got my computer about 3 wks ago though and wonder if I'll ever have time to do any of my favorite hobbies again, especially since finding this site.
