  1. I forgot to say that I took mine at my local library, it is free and I could go anytime during normal business hours. It was helpful for me to not have to make a specific appointment for the exams.
  2. The exams are proctored, don't know why because they are open book but I guess they want to make sure it is you that has taken the test. There are two tests a midterm and final. Again if you do the assignments and the practice tests you have all you need to pass the class with an A.
  3. Barb, Don't let this hold you back, you can do it. I agree with mom2michael the U of Utah Stats class gives you all you need to pass. It is well written and you can redo assignments to get the grade you want. Most, if not all, of the "math" portion is done by the program you just need to know how to plug in the numbers. It really isn't as scary as it seems. The hardest part is taking the first step then rest will follow. Good luck to you.
  4. Thanks everyone for giving great advice. I was worried that I would put them off by hounding but it sounds like thats what it takes. I would like to talk with the hiring manager but it is a locked unit and I will respect that. I will just keep calling or drop in on the recruiter and maybe try the floor again after the Holidays. Thanks again for your help. I never had this difficulty before and I have been a nurse for over 6 years so just took me by surprise. Have a great Thanksgiving!
  5. Hello everyone. I am having a heck of a time getting the nursing recruiter to call or email me. I applied for a PRN position on a LDRP unit about a month ago and have not heard anything. The site says my application is being considered but I would like to have an opportunity to talk with her, well preferably the hiring manager but I cannot get through. I have 4 1/2 years experience working on a postpartum unit (couplet care). The last 1 1/2 years I have worked at a free standing birth center. On my resume I stated seeking postpartum position and would look forward to training to L&D as the opportunity arose (knowing that I would have to increase to at least part time). There are 4 positions open right now so I thought they could at least use my postpartum experience for now. I know that I am not the only person having trouble getting through to this recruiter but I am not sure where else to go. I tried calling the hiring manager but didn't hear back from her either (afraid she wants to wait for the recruiter to send over the info). Anyway, anyone have any suggestions?
  6. Am I thinking wrong? A graduate degree is a MSN which is what most if not all CNM programs offer now. I know in the past that you could finish your CNM but would have to finish a few extra classes to actually have a MSN. Frontier used to be this way but now you get both CNM and MSN when you finish the program. Then doctorate degree is DNP. So if my thinking is right you will need to get your masters but not continue on for your doctorate. For those people who are CNM's but did not finish the masters portion will have to do that by 2010. Does this make sense? If I am thinking wrong someone please correct me. Have a great day.
  7. I am a childbirth educator and I have been setting aside that money to fund my education. I will continue to hold class while attending Frontier and hope to not have to take loans out. We shall see.
  8. Shannon and Jen Congratulations!!! So excited to meet all of you. Have a great night.
  9. Good luck everyone! :)
  10. Goozgog- I am not sure yet what hotel I will be staying in. I have never been there so need to do some research. Where are you staying? I would love to meet and look around the city before heading off to Hyden. For all of you waiting to hear on word of admission, I will be thinking of you. I wish you all much luck! Have a great day.
  11. I will be arriving on the 30th. Coming from Denver and it seems flights are always delayed so I didn't want to take my chances going in on the 1st especially this time of year. I will be staying in a hotel Sunday night and hoping to see a little of the city on Monday then catch the shuttle to Hyden. I am so excited to meet all of you.
  12. I am dancing on the ceiling! Just got my acceptance today for class 64. Looking forward to meeting you CNM2B.
  13. Goozgog, Hello, I hope to be there with you at Bound in December. I am in sort of the same position as you and if you don't mind I will share my thoughts. I have been a postpartum nurse for over 4 years, this last year I have been working at a free standing birth center. I was also thinking that it would be beneficial for me to go to L&D and I have applied to several places. This thought is running face into a brick wall and so I have decided to follow my intuition to stay where I am at the birth center (the type of birthing environment I want to support) and protect my belief in childbirth. As far as working full time and going to school full time with children. I have heard from other students going to Frontier that going full time is intense. You can choose part time now and then change to full time if you find that you have the time to do it, but I have heard that if you choose full time now you cannot back off to part time later. I have two children so I will be choosing part time. I wish you the best in your decision.
  14. Another great thing about Frontier is that you can do your clinicals anywhere you want. You do not have to stay in one place for all of your clinicals. I think it is a good idea to preceptor with a couple of different people so you can see different ways of doing things. I know several students who have by choice gone up to Alaska or down to Arizona just to vary up the education they received. So if you will have to move while your in clinicals do what you can where you are and then network in your new community and do what you can there. There are so many options now, good luck to you.
  15. Congratulations! I finally decided to do it and hope to have my application sent by the end of the week. I am really excited! Maybe we will see each other. Wish you the best.
  16. I am sorry that your nursing introduction to L&D has been so traumatic. I did pp for 4 years and did enjoy it, our max was 4 couplets. 5 couplets are a lot and I think you will find the same frustration that you are in now, no time with patients and dangerous situation. I plan on going on to become a CNM and I am currently looking for an L&D position. I also work in a birth center and understand that L&D in a hospital will be completely different than at the birth center but I do want the knowledge and skills from the hospital. I realize that the birth center is 4 hours away but could you go back for a week or weekend and attend a birth or two there to remind you of that magic of birth that is often lost in the type of environment you are working in? I wish you the best.
  17. From a child of a teen mom. Every girl in this situation has to find within themselves the right thing to do. It is a very difficult decision and choosing either adoption or raising the child should be respected. My mother chose to raise me and she was/is a wonderful mother. She was very strict with me as a teenager and now as an adult I admire her so much, especially after having children of my own. She had nurses that felt like they needed to teach her a lesson when she was giving birth to me, left her in a tiny cubicle, didn't explain anything to her, wouldn't listen to her and she was so frightened. It was such a scary experience for her and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I know that choosing to raise a child as a teenager is not the right decision for some people but for others it may be. My mom tells me often that I saved her from going down the wrong path in life. As hard as it may be you have to keep your personal feeling out and offer the support and compassion that is needed.
  18. kaceface, Hello, look into the programs and find out what their focus is on. I have a few friends that have gone to the brick and mortar school associated with a hospital and they are getting a very medical based training, not much support for out of hospital births. I also have friends who are attending or who have graduated from Frontier and they feel they have received a great education. One of the good things about Frontier, if you want to attend out of hospital births is you get to do a project of starting a birth center. There are lots of great schools out there, look around and find one that will help you in your mission.
  19. I agree that if you are not comfortable with doing this that you should not be forced to do it, but it does sound like they are understanding of those who choose not to have it done. Personally I do not have a problem with it and welcome the learning experience. I think it is a great learning opportunity for me and my classmate. I can give feedback to her and have an open dialog of what is happening and visa versa. I don't think anyone should make this the determining point as to what school you attend since it can be refused. Choose a school who's mission and philosophy's mesh best with yours, knowing that there may be some things that you feel differently on. Good luck in choosing your path.
  20. Belinda, Really the Utah one isn't too bad. It is all open book and very easy to follow. It is written in a very easy to understand way. It does cover a lot of material but they have done a great job of putting it together. I heard that Frontier was no longer accepting the Canyon College course so make sure it will qualify for the school you want to attend before you take it. Test wise for the Utah course it is open book and I take it at the Library.
  21. I am taking mine online with the U.Utah. This was a recommended class from Frontier. Here is the link, I am taking the PSY 3000 Statistical Methods in Psychology. http://continue.utah.edu/distance/online.php
  22. I took my midterm and I think it was very fair. I have not received my grade back but expect to have a good grade. I am embarrassed to say I started the class in August. There has been a lot going on and I didn't plan as I should have. I am now hoping to finish by the end of June. I will have to do several sections a week to accomplish this but I really must do it. If you planned on doing two sections a week it would take you about 4 months, including midterm and final. Good luck!
  23. Congratulations! That is so exciting! I am sorry about your daughter I hope she is well soon. I have not completely decided when I want to start. I am thinking of applying for Bound that starts in September, December, or March'ish. I do not see a Frontier Bound that starts in November just a Clinical Bound. Did you mean December? Anyway I wish you the best and maybe our paths will cross. Again, Congratulations!
  24. I am taking the U.Utah one now. I have been pleasantly surprised. It is written very well and easy to understand. It is a self paced program and that has been my only hang up, I keep procrastinating. I will be taking my midterm this week so I will let you know how it goes. They do have practice test and so I think it should be fine (open book too). I think it is a good program and have emailed the professor a few times and always had a quick response back. Good luck with your choice. What Bound class are you applying for? I will be applying to Frontier soon (I hope). Just trying to decide what the best time for me and my family would be.
  25. I talked to Frontier about this awhile back and they said that they would accept a person without L&D experience but sometimes those people had a harder time finding preceptors. You should talk with the programs you are interested in and let them know your experience and they may waive that requirement. Also network with midwives in your area to find a preceptor that doesn't mind the lack of L&D training. I have not applied yet but hope to soon, but the midwife I hope to have preceptor me actually prefers people to not have the L&D training. Good luck with your decision.
