  1. Hi, I work at Providence here in Anchorage. I was born and raised in anchorage. I have never worked at Regional but I had both my kids there! It's a great hospital (smaller than Prov) and its magna status. They are on computerized charting there. Its a beautiful facility too and recently remodeled. I don't know about the bonuses. Providence has bonuses also and is a wonderful hospital to work at if you are interested. They are also in the process of building a new hospital in the Valley (40-50 minute drive south). And we also have the Alaska Native Hospital which I've heard has the best benefits! As for neighborhoods, stay away from Mt. View or Fairview. They are the lower income neighborhoods, although there are some long time alaskans that live in those neighboorhoods. Airport Heights is the neighborhood next to Regional or anywhere near the university would work! You will love Anchorage! Hope this helps!
  2. I would like everyones opinion on this. Do you think they will ever find a cure for cancer or other serious diseases. I think they will and are always working on it, but one of my patients brought up a really good point that they make so much money off the drugs and treatments that maybe they really aren't working as hard as we know it. any ideas?
  3. You sound like an awesome nurse! very gentle and sympathetic. It is so sad the stuff we see. I work in an oncology unit also and see stuff that rips my heart out. She was lucky to have you for a nurse, thanks for sharing
  4. I can't believe it. Just 2 minutes ago I started a thread on this same subject. Then I was scrolling through and I saw this one. I am also thinking about getting one done but I am so chicken. My friend just had one done last year and she swears by it. She looks so good. I posted my thread under the break category. I don't know how to post it in this reply. sorry
  5. This is a funny thread! I live in Alaska and we don't have skunks. I had never even smelled one before until I went to NY when I was a teenager. BTW, we also have no snakes, cockroches or poisonous spiders (except a few brown recluce only in the woods)
  6. same here, we change with each unit.
  7. I have a friend who had a severe migraine and the ED gave her imitrex and she went into cardiac arrest and ended up in ICU for a week. Imitrex should not be given if pt has HTN. Good thread, very informative!
  8. you did the right thing. I have written myself up over a med error. It could have easily like your situation been swept under the rug and no one would have found out. But, I might have lost sleep and also could come back and bite me! Plus it made me feel good about being honest!
  9. That's interesting. If I send a copy to my insurance, what will they do?
  10. I went to the ER the other day with CP! The doc didn't even do an assessment on me. Did not listen to my heart/lungs or even look at my feet or feel my stomach or anything! In fact, he didn't even touch me! They did do an EKG and labs, found nothing. Anyways, a few weeks later I pulled up my H&P on the computer and I could not believe what I was reading. The doc charted that he assessed me for all the above. It went on and on and I got madder and madder. It took me a long time to decide to write him up b/c I'm not one to stir up trouble. But after talking to my DON, she kept encouraging me to do it. So I did, and now I am finding out that another person wrote him up for the same thing! I feel better now. I don't know what will happen b/c I just turned the letter in yesterday but I feel good about myself that I finally had the guts to do it! What do you all think?
  11. I've heard of Ambien having the opposite effect on people, just like Haldol and sometimes even Benadryl. I'm sorry to hear about your mom and your Breast CA. Remember you can always get support here from us!
  12. What do I want to hear in report? I want to hear that the patient is going home! HA!
  13. oh man. I'm with you! Hopefully only intelligent people will see the commercial and understand it's true meaning. Yeah right!!!!
  14. First of all, don't let one patient or patient family ruin it for you. This is obviously your calling and I think you should pursue it. I too, am interested in Hospice. That is what got me into nursing to begin with. I work on a medical floor also and I have not come across this kind of situation before. Of all the patients that I have cared for that were dying, it was a pleasant peaceful experience. Leave it to one person to mess things up for you. But that could happen in anything. Dont let it bring you down. Keep thinking positive and another thing, the daughter is probably like that wherever she goes, and in whatever she does. I don't buy into that saying that they are under stress and pressure cuz of a family member dying. B/C just because you may be under pressure of stress or even grief is no excuse to treat people mean. I hope this helps. I'm sure lots of other friends here will give you positive feedback too. That's the beauty of posting threads! Keep smiling
