  1. The program here does not require it either but the college required me to take it because I didnt pass the math part of the Tasp test. Here in Texas they passed laws that you have to meet TSI requirements so I have to take it or pass the math section of the entrance exam for college. So I guess I am kinda stuck. Uggghhh
  2. I was taking a remedial algebra class in college. I guess that is the same as your talking about. It was very difficult for me. Are you suggesting I find some type of math class outside of college? I didnt really understand your email. LOL I am not aware of any type of math classes except for the college ones. You said you avoided taking remedial classes in college so I am assuming you took some sort of class for math before college. Where did you take them at and how would I go about finding them? I have passed all parts of the college entrance exam except the math part. Nursing will require another type of entrance exam though.
  3. Yes I was taking pre reqs for nursing but it was hard with a 2 yr old at home. I was having to take a dev algebra class and it was very hard for me. I hate math and couldnt really get it. Algebra isnt require for nursing where I live but I had to take it because I didnt pass the tasp test yrs ago. I wish there was a way out of algebra. Uggghhh They are telling me I will still have to take it for LVN as well if I cant pass that test. Uggghhh So that is why I was thinking about Medical Assistant. The school hrs are in the evening as well. I have heard that MA's is one of the fastest growing careers but you know they will tell you anything to get you in there.
  4. I am now thinking about doing medical assisting. Can anyone give me any info about it? What do they make? My sister has a friend that is suppose to be making $25 an hour but I am not so sure about that. Anyhow the options for schooling would work out much better for me and give me a great in to the medical field. Do you have to take some sort of national or state exam for medical assisting? Is a diploma and certificate in Medical asssisting the same thing? My local school charges $12,700 to go for Medical assisting which I think is crazy. I found a online program that only charges $645 and says you can have it in 8 wks. I am just not sure which place to go to. The one online is accredited and my local one is not. I would much rather pay the cheaper price but worry about it all being online. Even the clinicals are online. Not sure how I am suppose to know how to draw blood and give shots from a virtual enviroment. Maybe its not that hard though. Any info you can give me on pay and where to go to school for this would be great. I prefer online but again worry about the clinicals being online. Also, can you be trained for this by a Dr's office or must you go to school to be trained? Thanks, Brandi
  5. Thanks. How many days a week is RN? I guess they say LVN is harder because its 5 days a week. From the programs I have seen though, RN is 4 days a week so there isnt a lot of difference. Do you guys find that the pre reqs for RN are hard? One more question. IS the math on the accuplacer difficult to pass or is it just basic stuff? Is there algebra on it? Ok I think I am done asking questions. LOL
  6. That is a pretty good difference. How long did you have to work as an RN to make that? They dont start out making that do they? This helps. Thanks
  7. I know pay is different in areas but what dollar amount difference is the pay for a Lvn and RN? Just a few dollars or 10 dollars or what? My mom is a LVN and can make $20 an hour but I have heard RN's are only making 21 or 22 an hour where I live. So does that mean RN's are only making $2 or $3 more than a LVN? Just wondering about this. Not sure if the extra year of school is really worth it. THanks
  8. Hi, My school makes the LVN program sound so much harder than the RN program. They say its very intense and the director even told me that the RN was easier and more manageable. I was thinking of doing LVN first since it doesnt require pre reqs. I was enrolled for two classes but decided to drop my classes. I have a 2 yr old and a 5 yr old so it was really hard. It was mainly the algebra that was kicking my butt. I have no idea about how to do that stuff and don't get it very easy. It was taking many hrs a day for just that class and I had my 2 yr old standing at my door crying for me the whole time I was studying. It was rough so I have decided to wait till she is in kindergarten to do anything. I have not taken the accuplacer test yet and hope I can learn the algebra enough on my own to pass that test. Then I would not have to take any dev algebra classes at all. Anyhow, is LVN really harder? Its crazy that it would be but I have heard it from a lot of people. I thought this board would be a perfect place to ask this since most have already been to LVN. I am so unsure of what to do first. I hate wasting time but there is not way I can study with a 2 yr old. My 5 yr old is fine and plays on her own or with her dad but the 2yr old is such a mamas girl. LOL Brandi
  9. Hi, I am 33 and just started working on my pre reqs. I have a 2 yr old and a 5 yr old so its tough. I am having to take a dev algebra class that is kicking my butt so I am worried about passing it. I even considered dropping my classes and just going for the LVN. I am hoping to just make it though the math. I so hate math and dont even need a math class for RN, its just those darn tsi requirements. Uggghhh Anyhow, I wonder sometimes if I am doing the right thing. It takes a lot of time away from my family and sometimes feel quilty about it. I have been a stay at home mom for 5yrs. Anyhow, I know its going to be tough but I try to think about the future and smile when I think about becoming a RN. I would love to work in L&D or postpartum unit. Glad to know there are others like me out there doing the same thing. Brandi
  10. Hi, I am enrolled in elementary algebra. Its kicking my butt. I am very weak in any kind of algebra. I can do basic math but not algebra. I am so confused. I went to tutoring and it did help but I can tell I am going to need many more sessions of tutoring. I can do the easy problems but when the problems start getting hard and long I cant figure them out. ANyhow, I need this class because I didnt pass the tasp test yrs ago. The math section. I have not taken the accuplacer. I dont know if I can pass this class and I am really worried. I am even considering just going for LVN instead of RN since I wouldnt have to take any algebra since the LVN is exempt from tsi requirments. The LVN does require you take the accuplacer for a pre entrance exam though. I think they just make you take a basic math for vocational nurses if you dont pass the math on that test. That would be so much easier than algebra. I have no idea what to do and am really worried I cant make it through this algebra class. I have heard by rumor that if you dont pass that the teachers will pass you anyways but I dont want to take that chance if they dont. Has anyone taken Elementary algebra and thought you were not going to pass and did? I am so scared. If I drop it my other class will be dropped to so I cant really drop it unless I am willing to drop everything and just go for the LVN program. Any advice? THanks, Brandi
  11. Just wondering if taking A & P in the summer is harder than taking it during the reg semester? I have taken A & P in Massage school but I am wondering if it will be different. I want to take it this summer while its somewhat fresh in my mind. Let me know what you think of taking it in the summer. Brandi
  12. The books at the college bookstore are sooo expensive. Where are you guys getting your books at? I went to cheapbooks.com and found some pretty reasonable ones but I am worried about how long it will take to ship them. I need them before the first class day on Aug 27th. Do you guys know where I could get them cheap at that the shipping is quick? Also, do you guys think that a math course, psychology and Human Growth would be to many classes to take? What is the work load like for these classes? I also have a 2 and 5 yr old so I hope 3 classes are not to many. Brandi
  13. The very best is Arbonne lotion and hand soaps. Very good. I became a consultant because there products are so good. Good stuff. PM me if you need futher info on it. Brandi
  14. Wow this makes me feel so much better. I have a 2 and 5 yr old. I have been really worried about going back to school. I start in just a few weeks. I am taking 3 classes. My 5 yr old starts kindergarten in a few weeks as well and my 2 yr old will be going to a preschool program 3 days week. This is when I will take my classes. I will have to study when my husband gets home from work or after the kids are in bed. I am sure I will be studying on the weekends if need be too. I am just really scared about the actual nursing classes when I start the nursing part. I am just on pre reqs right now. It will take me a year and half because I am going kinda slow with the kids. Hopefully by the time the nursing part starts my youngest will almost be in kindergarten. If not she can go to a program at the school that is for 4yr olds and they have the same hrs as the kindergarten does. I just dont know how I would pay for it. Its tough paying for childcare while going to school. I have to get student loans just to go to school and did not qualify for any grants. So I will be in debt up to my ears after school. Hopefully I will make well enough to pay for it though. I will need lots of advice on study time and making this work. Its very tough to do with young children. I just wonder if its going to be to much or if I can handle this or if I am smart enough. I sure hope so. So glad there are others doing this as well. Brandi
  15. Hi, I am just now starting pre reqs but should be able to apply for nursing school in about a year and half. I to have 2 kids. ages 2 and 5. I am really nervous about going back to school and having a family. I worry I wont have time for them and that school will consume my every moment. I dont think the pre reqs will be that bad but the actual nursing part may be. My youngest will either almost be in kindergarten or just getting ready to start kindergarten by the time I start the nursing part. So that will be good. I dont know how people do it with young kids not in school yet. I will be taking my pre reqs kinda slow. No more than 2 to 3 classes at a time. I already have 2 of the classes. How was taking A&P with young kids? Its got to be hard. I also want pp or L&D. I would also like NICU. I think though I would like to start in PP. It sounds like exactly what I am looking for. I may end up changing my mind as well. Who knows. I am just really nervous about school having kids. Can I do it? Will it be to much for me and my family to handle? Am I smart enough? Those kinds of things. I really really wish there were a program where I lived that you can go part time like your doing. What program is that? That would be great but I have not heard of any of the programs around me offering that. Good luck with school and let me know how it goes. Feel free to pm me. Brandi
  16. What is there job exactly? Thought it may be a good way to get an insider view of the hospital setting and what nurses do. What are they paid? Is there a lot of lifting? Brandi
  17. I am starting pre reqs in August. This is good advice. I would like to get a head start on nursing school as well. I wouldnt even know where to begin to make drug cards and such though. Where would you find this info at if your not currently in nursing school? Are there flash cards in the bookstore you can buy already made up? Thanks
  18. Oh I know they are not nurses and I wasnt trying to say they were. I just know they work in Dr's offices and draw blood, take blood pressure and things like that. I was just trying to get a better idea of exactly what there job is. I was thinking it may be a less stressful way to get into the medical field since I have 2 young children. RN is going to be a long hard road. Thanks, Brandi
  19. Just wondering about maybe doing this first but not sure. Just something I am tossing around. What do they do and how much do they make? Is it like a LVN or totally different. Is the schooling easier? It is mostly Dr's Offices right? THanks, Brandi
  20. The test I will be taking is called TEAS. Its weird they all have different names. LOL Hopefully it wont be to bad. I am suprized they test you on A&P for just the entrance exam. Brandi
  21. Just curious as to what it is like. It will be awhile before I am ready to take it. Is it somewhat like the TASP test? Is it just english, reading and math or what? Has anyone had to take it more than once? Brandi
  22. Just wondering about that. I am a bit concerned. I have been arrested a couple of times. It wasnt anything major. My first husband was a jerk and got me into trouble. I was very young. I also had a wreck one time and the lady sued me and I could not afford to pay for damages. My license was suspended for a bit but I did pay that off. The nurse programs all state if you have ever been arrested for anything you will need to get a Declaratory order. It was never anything crimal or anything. So do you think I would have to get one? I have heard the process could take up to 2yrs. I hope I do not need this. Its kinda embarressing asking the school so thought you guys may be able to help me. Has anyone had to do this before?
  23. I am starting in the Fall for my pre Reqs. It will be about a year and half or 2 before I actually apply for the nursing part. IS there a wait or do they just go by pts to get in? Would love to talk to someone else wanting to go to nursing school in my area. Thanks
  24. I am in Lubbock so San Angelo isnt far from me. The pay is better in Lubbock. I have been told they start RN's at $23 an hour but have no idea for LVN. I have not started school yet. I start in the Fall.
  25. Hi, I have a 5yr old and a 2yr old. I am getting ready to start school in the Fall. I am going to take my pre reqs for the RN program. By the time I start my nursing part my 2 yr old should be about ready to start kindergarten. I am just like you. I worry it will be to much to take on. I am thinking of doing the LVN since its shorter and then getting the RN but I am still not sure. My mom is a LVN. She is trying to encourage me but I have heard a lot of horror stories about nursing school. The LVN is 5 days a week and they really cram it in so that is why I thought RN would work out better but its a lot longer with the pre reqs. I think we can do it but it will be tough. Everyone says its worth it though. PM me if you want to talk. Brandi
