  1. You will learn something new everyday in the OR. Consider yourself at a greater advantage learning the more complex procedures rather than the more common cases. Organization and timing is essential in the OR and working together as a team is the foundation of a successful environment. You are sadly mistaken thinking the "loud bird" gets fed. You must earn a level of respect from your peers and this is accomplished through trust and experience. While your friends realize you might be getting screwed, have they offered to throw a helping hand? Keep up your good work and stay professional. I can assure you someone is watching and taking notes. Your hard work will reap rewards. Be sure you take notes as well for your evaluation :)
  2. It does get better however, you do still experience some stress. Nursing school provides the foundation for your entrance into the reality of the healthcare system. In addition, it prepares you for the almighty state board exam.. Do you best and learn to laugh along the way for those are going to be some great memories you will recall one day. The real world can be much tougher and less forgiving and it no longer becomes a grade, but rather a life. They may seem like "nurse ratchet" instructors, with meaningless deadlines, but one day you will look back and understand the discipline. It is all part of their plan....
  3. Believe in yourself and go for the BSN.. you will retain the information. Tuition will only rise in the future leaving you more to pay later. You never know what great opportunities your future may hold....
  4. I have been a nurse for 12 years. During those 12 years all in surgery my roles included everything from staff RN to charge RN. Once I decided to take the leap of faith in management, I chose to change organizations. I was fortunate in the new organization in that I had a director that was willing to teach me about budget, leadership, ect... I currently hold a BSN and if I were to pursue my education it would be a MBA. I agree with the Six Sigma Leadership program. Obtaining the blackbelt and or green or yellow is most helpful. I believe going directly from staff to a director role could be overwhelming! While education is important, don't forget about the politics of a situation. Good Luck to You!
  5. 12 years ago my pc shut off after 75 questions. I thought for sure I was going to go into cardiac arrest or some unknown psychiatric disorder that I forgot to study.... Back then it was a waiting game, I believe 30 days of pure agony!! I passed... Need not worry you are safe!! Congrats to you!
  6. Agree No CPR= no work... it is your responsibility to ensure you keep this current. Our facility provides the training and time and we try to get everyone in groups at specific times rather than randomly. ACLS is not required in our specific department however, it is required in other departments. Hopefully, a good educator would have come to you prior to expiration and would have worked with you on the issue.
  7. Indianapolis Indiana new grads in surgery...$ 19.00-$22.00 with potential sign on and this does not include call stipen and shift diff.
  8. Kayaknurse, Thank you for the useful information, very much appreciated!! As you might imagine it is difficult not even having a clue as where to begin the search in hopes of not ending up in a place you are not happy. My first choice was in fact Tampa General as I have family closer to that area and have done extensive research on the facility. However, my friend is moving with me and is accepting a job at a plant in a small town called Arcadia. I was trying to find a hospital 50 miles or less within this plant. I know the almighty dollar is always an issue here in the midwest as well grr... I am not familar with HCA? Are these hospitals union? We do not have union facilities here yet. We have great facilities that pay very well here and treat the employees very fair. However, Indianapolis weather is much to be desired... Indy
  9. How unfortunate for you to have such a bad first experience into the life of nursing. Please do not let one person set your views into the future of all nurses yet to come. Rather, now you have learned those feelings and what NOT to do when your turn comes around as a preceptor. I believe most RN's are pressured into this added role and compensation is little. Believe in helping one another rather than beating each other down... it can be rewarding!
  10. This wage seems a bit low to me as well. The new grads here in Indy range from $19.00- $22.00/hr and of course taking the shift diff into consideration as well as call. The cost of living is taken into consideration within the city and all area hospitals compete with one another. Congrats to you, light at the end....
  11. Hi! I am currently a surgery manager in Indy looking to relocate to Sarasota. My passion has always (12 years) been in surgery as I would prefer to stay in this speciality. I have no idea about the healthcare system in this area or the better of choices for employment. Any information provided would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch...
