So far my experience with UTMB and their SON has been positive. Most of our instructors are helpful and lecture on the material effectively. But it's important to put in your personal effort by coming prepared to class and studying after class. When I'm not studying, our on campus gym is an excellent way to stay in shape and relieve some stress. We have intramural sports (basketball, softball, volleyball, etc.) and other campus parties/events that allow you to interact with students from all four schools. For Mardi Gras, UTMB's Graduate school of biomedical sciences sponsored a crawfish boil for all students. Also, we have a 24 hour student center. This area is great for those "all nighters" and there are game rooms to play PS III, X-Box, or Game Cube. The student center has a library of hundres of games. As you can see, we have a balance of hard work/studying and fun.

the only health care experience i had that got me into utmb's nursing program was approximately one year of volunteer experience at a local hospital. during the interview, emphasize the highlights of your volunteer experiences such as memorable patient interaction experiences, getting to work with different health care team members, etc. basically you have to let them know why nursing is the right career choice for you. hope this info helps a little. good luck!

Applications are stored electronically on computer systems that are backed up. UTMB is hoping to have power restored in the next week or two so we can begin meeting the needs of our community, patients, and students. Please bear with us during these difficult times. UTMB has dorms and fraternity houses available for all students. The dorms run about $385 a month and the fraternity houses are about $400 a month. Both options provide all bills paid, free cable, and wireless internet. The dorms are fully furnished as well. Hope this helps.

For the RN-BSN program in Fall 2007 approx. 40 students were given admission and in Spring 2007 the number was approx. 20 students. I believe you have a 50/50 chance of getting into this program at UTMB. Hope this helps.

I would definitely say UTMB, not just because I'm a student there but because of the friendliness and strong ties UTMB has with the local community. Since joining this university, I am a member of two student organizations that combine medical, allied health, and nursing students together for achieving a positive outcome. We get to work together in community health fairs, take field trips to South Texas, and even play each other in intramural sports! One of the organizations I'm in participates and organizes several community outreach programs geared towards serving Galveston's uninsured and underserved populations. Also UTMB has been recently been on the move toward implementing something called "synergy." In a nutshell, this is interdisciplinary education which combines the resources and expertise from all four schools at UTMB. For example, this semester in select nursing classes we have had some lecturers done by faculty members from our medical school and vice versa. This has made our education amazing and UTMB an excellent choice for me and several other students.

Thanks for posting that Jezziemis! Hope your Spring Break is going well! As Jezziemis pointed out, I was one of the few students that received a call after one day of orientation. Initially, I had not been accepted, but I was persistent by calling the admission's department and letting them know about my strong desire to attend this school. I know how the waiting made me feel less than a year ago and can relate to how some of you may feel - But HANG in there!. So folks, relax, let the admissions people do what they need to do and hope for the best! It's all you can do at this point.

Yes, they are interviewing Fall applicants at this time. I know last December they were interviewing the Bacc2 students.

Yes, they sure are! I have been seeing the new recruits coming to the third floor in the SON building. As Jezziemis has mentioned before, be sure to be professionally dressed for your interview and just be yourself!

I agree with Dramaangel. I was accepted a day after orientation. Originally, I had not recieved an acceptance/rejection letter so I called the admission's office. The staff may not be 100% organized, but they are friendly and open to phone calls. After calling them, 2 weeks later I got accepted. I think being persistent and personally coming to the school helps put a face next to your application. I strongly suggest new applicants to attend our information sessions that occur on a monthly basis. It's an honor to be part of the professional atmosphere of UTMB. I woudn't want to be anywhere else!

Anyone hear something from UTMB regarding admissions? Anyone's online status change from "pending?" I sure hope they let us know soon!

Anyone here anything yet? It is June 30th and my status still says pending. I tried calling the preadmissions adviser, Dana Robertson, but she is no longer with the SON. Another person I spoke to on Friday told me that we should expect to hear something by July 15th. They keep extending the time for the final decisions.

Congratulations Jezziemis! On a side note, does anyone know if UTMB considers pluses and minuses when determining your GPA? I am hoping they do not b/c it will lower my GPA. I've done all my prereqs at UH and they use the +/- system while several other Texas universities do not. I hope UTMB's SON has a standardized procedure when calculating GPA's from different colleges and universities. It's only fair that way. I know for a fact that their medical school does not use the +/- system.

I think taking your science classes at UH and doing well in them will certainly give you an edge. I personally talked to the associate dean of nursing at UTMB and he told me that their admission's committee favors courses completed at UH's science dept. UH's science dept. is hard, but it has a stellar reputation in the eyes of admission's committees. Just my opinion...

Congratulations nicdem! When did you apply to UTMB? I applied early April.

I thought they changed to "rolling" admission's after they extended the deadline. Packerbacker, what are some of the "ways of UTMB?"

Anyone here anything yet? I called today and X said most people will find out by the end of June.

I called too and found out that the committee is meeting next Monday and then again during end of May. Also, I learned for the fall 2007 class the 120 spots are composed of 90 full time (2 yr program) and 30 part time students (3 yr program). When your application is reviewed the committee decides whether to admit you into the full or part-time program. Good luck to everyone!

Thanks, BrittRN2b. I just called UTMB SON and spoke to X the preadmission's advisor. X was out of the office. She told me that they do conduct unofficial transcript evaluations on request only. Furthermore, she explained to me that while they do evaluate GPA, they look deeper into the numbers such as: Where were the prereqs taken? - at a community college or 4-year university. Amount of hours you took each semester Work exp

I recently applied to UTMB's SON. Can anyone tell me if they will mail a transcript evaluation showing what classes were used in determining the Nursing Prereq. and Science GPA's? Thanks!
