How allnurses, was just wondering how many patients were you up to by the end of your second week of orientation. I work on a cdu unit and we do a lot of admissions and discharges and it takes up a lot of time. I am only up to two patients and I still don't fully understand the process. What is everyone else doing, help!

  3. Thanks everyone.
  4. Yeah, Im a new grad, I have been out of school since May 2012.
  5. This is a no brainer, take the new job! In the end, you have to do whats best for you, not your friends.
  6. where is dorsey located?
  7. Hi allnurses, I was wondering how long was your orientation. I will be working on a 23 hour observation unit and I believe my orientation will be about 4 to 6 weeks. I'm hired for on midnights and I will only spend two weeks on days, then I start nights. Do you guys think that's enough time. I'm a bit concerned as others seem to have anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks or more. I live in Michigan but please do not post there, as there is hardly any activity/response there. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot everyone, I appreciate yall comments. Yeah, I suppose I'll c what works for me, looks like there really isn't anything standard as far as brain sheets go. I will be going on the floor next Tuesday, so, of course I'm trying not to freak out. I will only be on days for two weekends, then I go on nights, not sure for how long, but do you guys think 2 weeks is long enough on days?
  9. Wow, I probably would have been fired too; I have low blood sugar and you are PREGNANT, it would have been on!! He's so ignorant, if he's stealing lunches, there's no telling what else he's stealing! His manager needs to definately be told about this.

Thanks guys, your comments are very helpful, as I was wondering how a brain sheet would be helpful on this type of unit. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated as well. Anyone know what the a day is like on the unit. I will be on midnights, thanks again!

Happy New Year allnurses! I will be starting my new job in a 23 hour observation unit and was wondering if anyone had a good brain sheet or any type of organizational tips I could use to help me with the whole process. I'm very excited and nervous of course. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should I just use a regularly med surg brain sheet? Thanks in advance.
  13. Im not even practicing yet, and I thought thats how you were suppose to give them.
  14. Clinical was extremely hard for me, but make sure you see all you can and do all you can, will help you in the end. Im a new nurse about to venture in my first nursing job and I feel so unprepared; but all my friends tell me that nursing is pretty much hands on and that is where you learn everything, on the floor. Really practice your skills and try to do them in the clinical setting though so you can be comfortable at it. I loved class time and wished thats all we had to do, but if thats the case we wouldn't be nursing, now would we, lol.
  15. couldn't have said it better myself!
  16. Thanks owlRN01, this is exactly what I was looking for!
  17. Im an older person but a brand new nurse and Im sorry but maybe its just me, but I don't see why anyone should have to put up with this crap. You are grown just like they are, you a professional just like they are; if they are burnt out or tired of nursing, then they need to move on and stop making eveyone else life around them miserable! Im not sure if maybe they feel threatened or whatever the case maybe they need to remain professional at work, this isn't some social gathering. I use to work for a large company before I went back to school for nursing and that was the most miserable/bitter group of women I had ever come in contact with; but I went in did my job, killed them with kindness and went home. Now I realize that nursing is a team effort, not sure why they are ignoring your questions or yelling but if you can't get answers from them, can you perhaps ask your nm, this is ridiculous and petty. My nm has a sign on her door that says "save the drama for your mama". The job is hard enough without coworkers making it that much harder. What type of person is your nm, maybe she can weigh in on this. Not that you should rat your coworkers out, but you are there for the good of your patient and if the pettiness is interferring with that, then it should be brought up to the nm; also if you can find other coworkers to talk to like someone else mentioned, I would ignore them. Good luck and keep us posted. Of course, once you get experienced, you can always find another unit to work on.
  18. Thanks guys, I appreciate that, I will be starting on a cdu unit, so I was just wondering. Im sure I will have tons of questions. I have been out of school since May and of course I feel like I know nothing, you know the normal "new" feeling, lol. I just hope I don't get on anyones nerves with all the questions.
  19. Hi allnurses, hope everyone is enjoying the holidays, but I have a dumb question; while in orientation for your first nursing job, everyone always say to ask lots of questions. Okay, but what types of questions are you supose to ask? Any and all examples will be greatly appreciated. I will be starting my job on the 7th of Jan and was just wondering the types of questions I should be asking, thanks a lot.
  20. All of the above have good suggestions; I would definately take this to the powers that be, as this person sounds like she is slandering your good name/repitition and it could hurt you in the long run. Misery loves company, so if you try to move to another department or even hospital for that matter, this could follow you. Hearsay can be extremely dangerous, rather true or not. If nothing is done, I like the idea of an attorney, protect yourself or at least talk to an attorney if it comes to that. Continue to do your job, sounds like your doing it well, ignore that person; SHES IGNORANT, don't give her the satisfaction of her knowing that she's getting to you, all the while, documenting everything that shes doing; in the end, people will see her for who/what she really is. Keep up the good work, pray if you have to, to get you through the day, but don't give her anymore ammunition! Take care honey and keep us posted. Oh do you have family in town, maybe you can be with them. Also, you really should be careful what you tell people from this day forward, its ashame that its hard to trust people nowadays but until you absolutely know for a fact you can trust someone, refrain from telling your personal business, especially at work. People thrive on knowing other people business! I always say, I go to work to do a job not to make friends, but if I do meet a friend, its a blessing.
  21. I second that; this is exactly what I used and passed with 85 questions on my second try. You can do it.

Hi allnurses, happy holidays to you all. I will be starting my new job the second week of January in a clinical decision unit, (23 hour observation), which is basically an extension of the emergency department; but patients in our unit can actually stay up til 4 days (I know sounds strange). Does anyone have any tidbits about what I can do to prepare or what to expect. Anyone work in a cdu; any and all info will be greatly appreciated. I'm so nervous! I'm actually terrified, want to really do a good job.
  24. This is actually a pretty nice brain sheet! Thanks.
