Love being a Nurse, Hate the politics that go along with it. As you said though, your going to have pro's & con's anywhere you go. The person who hates his/her job needs to change thier own situation if at all possible. Do not be discouraged. Best wishes to you concerning your schooling, and do not let a few that are unhappy color your world.

Thank you. Yes, I do have a new position. I'm going back to med/surg at a reputable hospital. Will have to get used to 12 hr shifts again, but at this point I feel I can do just about anything!! All I can really say is I made a major error in judgement when I accepted the positon I am in at the moment. Lesson well learned. Taking a week off for r&r, then I hit the floor running (i'm used to that!!)

Just wanted to share my joy & relief!! Finally moving on to a better situation. I have been currently been working in a LTC facility where I am the only nurse on nights (I posted about this awhile back) and responsible for no less than at the moment 103 residents. It is skilled facility where I am responsible for Meds, labs, and everything else, needless to say my stress level has been off the chart. I just have no idea how they get away with this!! In 2 weeks I am outta there, no more head banging, staying late to try to convince management to change the unsafe situation. No more trying to recruit others to stand with me and try to change the status quo. I will miss the residents and my co-workers on nights, they are awesome CNA's. I would never have been able to do my job without them. It makes me sick to my stomach to know this situation continues, but for my own health and well being I have to leave. So here's thanks to those who listened and offered advice on the last post where I vented.

Days - Attitude with a capital A, mostly the med techs & Cna's, Nurses just very harried trying to get everyone and everything organized. Evenings - Pretty laid back, let's alot of things slide but friendly. Nights - Works together as a team, has each others backs and picks up the slack.

Tazzi, I don't know you, But I wanted to let you know I'm pulling for you. From what I have read through your posts, I do believe your going to be a great addition to thier team!

You did the right thing. Never compromise a patient's safety for popularity.

I agree completely with the above poster. Every class has "That woman". My class also had "The Nodder", she nodded her head in agreement to everything, so much so I found myself nodding in time with her. Made me crazy!

I currently work in a skilled facility and I am the only nurse in the building at noc with 5 cna's. I have 111 residents at the moment.. no, it's not a typo..111. No med tech, I have about 15 scheduled meds to give, not counting the 3 gt's and iv's at the moment, and my skin assessments, and the medicare hall.....etc, etc... and this is pretty much the norm in the area, as I have checked into various other employment opprotunities. I'm about ready to call it quits as far as nursing is concerned. thank goodness the aquity at the moment is not to high!!

I have worked a few different area's of nursing and each is challenging and rewarding in it's own way, and as bill4745 stated, it's all nursing. My best advice to you is do your homework on the facility before accepting the position. Maybe you could even shadow a shift just to get the feel of the place and the people. LTC can be extremely rewarding. It is most certainly challenging in various ways. Wishing you the best!

I feel your pain and frustration! Currently in a rather dangerous situation myself. I can tell you from experience it is not going to get better until legislation steps in and mandates stricter guidelines... and I don't see that happening. Wishing you the best of luck.

Another night, hopefully it goes well. Maybe I'll just go back into med/surg... unfortunately the same company owns that too. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers i'm gonna need it.

yep.. shocked me too, this is a skilled facility, affiliated with the hospital, so we get anything and everything in there. I'm in the process of trying to find some ratios that pertain to my state and hand that to them.. kind of at a loss. The stress is really starting to kick in. I appreciate the feedback everyone, thanks!

Thank you all for replying, to answer some of the questions, I am an LPN, no RN on site on the premises on nights. The acuity level varies vastly. The payscale is lower than what I am used to. The halls ( 60 some odd one on wing, 60 on the other) are not connected. I can't go into detail of course, but I will say it is a growing corporation and the staffing situation is the norm for them. I have spoken to several other nurses from different facilities affiliated with this company, and the story is pretty much the same. As luck would have it, I am in a situation at the present time where I am not able to go elsewhere due to transportation issues. I log quite a bit of overtime just trying to document and cover myself as much as possible, frustrating and scary for me and those I have pledged to take care of. Thanks for letting me vent!

Hi everyone, new to the site. I am currently in LTC, have worked this area before and enjoy it, However I'm a little concerned about nurse to resident ratio at my facility and was hoping for some feedback on what other nurses may be experiencing. I am night charge and I am the only nurse in the building responsible for 100- 104 residents. I give all prn's and some scheduled meds, as well as having to do everything else a nurse does. I have spoke with the powers that be about the situation and they do not seem concerned at all. I myself am very concerned, but it seems I have no recourse. Any advice would be helpful.Thanks!
