  1. first i think you need to realize that most staff nurses on this site have no clue who mckinsey is or bcg for that matter. your mentor is right. i think if you can get on with that caliber of a consulting firm then go for it. realize u are not just competing against lawyers and mba's. alot of times these firms go after freshly minted md's with impressive credentials. the idea that taking an np degree and moving into management is possible but it will be a long hard fight to get there and take u 15-20 years. thats what people know and see and it resonates to them that its the way its done. if u join one of those two groups u discuss u will more than likely find doors opening down the road in major insurance companies, c-suite hospital positions, quality and safety, and on and on. what you re contemplating doing opens far more doors than being an np or middle manager with an np ever will. just think if you went to mckinsey for two years with an np background you will probably touch more things at a c-suite level than u ever would have access to as an np. your mentor is right. your strategy and thinking is spot on. the one thing u may not see is that the road u go down eventually should u choose this path will prob be a road u haven't even considered at this point. my advice would be to prepare your best for those interviews. those jobs open up entire new worlds for your career. besides mckinsey associate starting salaries are closer to np experienced salaries. long run you make much more and have a plethora of opportunities and experience going the consulting route. the drawback is you wont be doing bedside care, but i think you made your peace with that already. good luck on your interviews you will need it!
  2. when u have vasopressin running and another drip like say dobut or dopa or whatever. do intensivists or critical care docs like to wean off the other drips first and then vaso. Or do they prefer to get them off something like levophed first? Whats the rationale. Im sure there are many different situations but in general if u could try to explain this to a new grad I would be most thankful.
  3. otterbein is a new program. the nursing school is very highly regarded. the crna is new. the class i believe is small. grant is a good hospital where most of the trauma patients go. grant is in downtown columbus. otterbein is in an upper middle class suburb. one thing about otterbein that stuck out for me was they dont require GRE.
  4. I would like to know if the hours I spent in orientation (12 weeks) on a critical care unit count towards the required 1750. Im almost at a year on the unit so I have enough hours if they count. If they dont count then I need to wait a few months. Anyone able to shed some light on this?
  5. 68k a year based on 36 hrs? 40hrs? 44hrs? Can you shed some light on the pay. Is overtime available? What is the overtime rate? Do you get paid in dollars or Saudi money?
  6. While they are not union and may not pay the highest, I would have to say the folks at Mt. Carmel seem the happiest to me. Mt Carmel East is a very supportive environment. The folks at MC New Albany surgical center have an awesome facility and its kinda dreamy to work there from the folks I talk to. Just my 2cents.
  7. 3 questions.... 1. Which agency? 2. What is pay rate? 3. How did u manage to get a family contract like the above poster stated I have only heard of single status contracts. Overall, I have heard alot of good feedback regarding working in Saudi. Only downside is less Americans are there now as were 15 years ago due to fears of terrorism. However, those I have spoken to that have been there have loved the experience. I say go for it.
  8. I'm going to be applying to be an IP in Ohio and would like to know a few things. 1. Are there referrals available on the directory for Franklin county or is finding patients going to be a real challenge? 2. Who determines the amount of visits per week? Is that something I do or is it already done for me?
  9. As an RN if I do a SOC and then the visits are performed by LPN's am I responsible for what happens with the patient on all the LPN visits? If I am hired to do SOC for multiple patients but dont receive the subsequent visits is this something I should be concerned with....is it a red flag? I feel somewhat confused where my responsibility ends if I only see thepatient to open the case and I am not the case manager. I am very concerned I will go do SOC on multiple patients and have my license at risk for tings that may happen that Im not even aware of happening. Please advise.
  10. University of Toledo has a program for nurses that trains them to be an organ/tissue donation coordinator. I want to say its a masters level nursing course but Im not certain on that. I have been told it's the only program like this in the country.
  11. What do public health army nurses do? Are they sent to disasters in foreign locales alot? What do they do conus versus oconus for example. Can anyone shed some light on that or personal experience thanks.

The dog is something you would need to speak with the recruiter about. Surely they have a job somewhere they can accomodate the two of u and a dog they are a big agency. Standard contracts are 48 or 60 hours. I think your plan is awesome and will allow the two of u to save alot of my for the future. The companies the above poster mentioned are notorious for low pay. Fastaff is notorious for paying top dollar. I say go for it.
  14. From what I understand the VA travel corps is new and it is still in its beginning phase. It will gradually grow larger in scope. I am really interestred in hearing some replies as well. Maybe u should post the question in the Military/VA forum also. Since u will be working there soon keep us updated as well to what u find out. Thanks.
  15. oh to have 13 weeks off. seems like a dream.
  16. That is a very scary reality. I had a family member who worked corrections and she felt very unsafe at all times for the entire 5 years working there. Due to lax staff letting things slide. And more so from the staff that had connections to the inmates. Staff members even fall in love with some of the inmates. Some guards are corrupted to one extent or the other. It was alot of little things but as she said the inmates only have to succeed once.
  17. I also just learned that the reason neither of us can send private messages is that they just changed to board policy 2 days ago. You now need 15 posts before u can private message people. What is the required hours per week for the 4300 a month? Is it 3 shifts a week? 4 shifts a week? or some kind of 3 one week and 4 the next type of deal? Sorry I know its alot of ???????? Thanks.
  18. So overtime is basically about 26 dollars an hour? Is it overtime after 36, after 40, or after 48? Thank you. Trying to get a very realistic picture of what I can make a month doing 6 shifts of 12 hours each week.
  19. In case someone is wondering we are discussing Saudi Arabia. Serendipty222 -- Which agency do u go through? Helen Z.? SAInternational? Medfinders? Or someone else? Also, I realize u go as single status but can that be changed once u are there for a few years to include family if u have intentions to stay for years to come? Do you know if it is difficult to get hired on with Aramco?
  20. strange i suddenly cant figure out pm as well. Is there any chance u could just post your reply here or in a new thread on travel nursing. thanks. really looking forward to hearing some details.
  21. Any advice on what type of recorder to get? Normal size cassette tapes or mini cassette tapes? Anything else to consider? Just want to get an idea of what I should be looking to purchase before I spend the money. Thanks
  22. I would be interested to start a conversation regarding the future of Travel Nursing pay. Would like to know peoples opinion about the future of wages. Do you see travel pay increasing in the future as baby boomers age? Increasing more than normal? Will the demand remain stagnant or rise? Will there be a dramatic increase in demand? Will the supply stay stagnant/decrease/rise? I see that wages tend to remain around the $35 - $40 mark as of now. Not considering housing and other things. How long do you think until it will reach 45-50? Would love to hear opinions from experienced travel nurses. Thanks
  23. Not yet. I will be though. Im in nursing school at the moment. But I did an exhaustive amount of research prior to deciding to go the nursing route. The ability to be completely mobile was one of the biggest draws to the profession for me. That and the never ending learning curve. So, I'm a couple years away from realizing that dream. And when I do, I think Im more inclined to head for Saudi Arabia than sailing. I get seasick. Just out of curiosity how much are marina fees in florida or wherever u are familiar with? I would be interested to know how much of the housing stipend u can save by staying in a marina. It would also be really cool if u could do a california contract and then head down through the panama canal and over to florida for a contract. Now that would be cool.
  24. I cant remember where I read this but I do remember reading about this for sure. About two years ago I read an article in a magazine or a post on a message board or something about a couple who were both rn's and lived in mexico 6 months a year. then they would sail up to california coast and stay at the marine and work 2 consecutive 13 week contracts and then set sail back and relax in mexico for 6 months. I believe they were early 50's in age. They were US citizens who were semi-retired and based out of some expat community in Mexico they seemed to really enjoy. They were also very much into boats, sailing, and all that other stuff landlovers will just never understand. Wish I had a link for you but I dont at all. It was just something that I remember reading about. But the point is, it can be done. It has been done. And from what I remember they seemed to be having alot of fun. I would think marina fees would be less than normal rent. Then again, this is california I'm speaking of so who knows. Its a country itself I swear. And also consider there are many people who do this in RV's. I sure as hell would rather do it based from a sailboat than from an RV. You could live in Florida 6 months a year and then go live the easy cheap life somewhere in the carib. Aruba, St. Croix, Grenada, or even Cuba. Sounds like if nothing else u could write a book about your experiences. And indeed you would have some cool stories to tell. Good luck. Take me with you hahaha.
