I am Joe, and I work as an ER Tech at St. John. I live in Tulsa with my wife, who's an RN at St. John. I'm currently going to school at Rogers State, getting my pre-reqs out of the way for the Paramedic program, which starts in Fall. My ultimate goal is to be out in the field as a Paramedic, but I really like the ER I'm at, so I plan to be there awhile, even if I have to go ECB down the road.

I worked at St. Francis for 3 years, from 96-99 as a PCT, and made a little under $9 an hour. However, it's not an employee-friendly place to work (not just my opinion). I'm currently an ER Tech at St. John and making $11.48/hr plus $1.06 differential for night shift. Not sure what the techs on the regular floors make, but I'm thinking $10/hr-ish. I'd look into St. John as well, before you make a decision

Here's the breakdown in my ER: ER Docs--Navy Blue RN/LPN--Wine or White ER Tech--Hunter Green Registrars--Red w/ Black pants Unit Secretaries-- Light Blue w/Black pants We also have the occasional agency CNA to help with the staffing, and they wear Royal Blue. We also have our scrubs embroidered with our first names and position, and ID badges are supposed to be displayed where the pt. can see them. In ER and Psych. there are no last names on the badges.

My hospital uses color-coding by position as well: RN: Wine or White NA: Royal Blue or Khaki Pediatrics: Purple ER Techs: Hunter Green Orderlies: Navy Respiratory: A sort of pea-soup green Scrubs are supposed to be embroidered with first name and position.

Though this an old post, I thought I'd reply anyway. I am starting next week as an ER Tech in a Level 2 trauma center. The base rate is $11.04, with a $1.06 differential after 2:30pm, and an additional $.50 on weekends. So, since I will be working nights, and every other weekend, I figure an average of about $12.25. Not getting rich by any means, but respectable for the position.

The hospital that my wife works at(and I will be starting at next week), went to a dress code. RNs wear wine, aides wear royal blue, ER Techs (me) wear green. We have to buy our own, and they have to be embroidered with first name and position. Though I do think it looks good, and it's easier for employees to tell who's what, from what my wife's told me, I don't think it's made a big difference in the Pts. being able to tell who's who. Just my .02
