I woke up during surgery, Have you?
I work in surgery and it is not bad anesthesia if the patient briefly awakens. I have only seen that happen once and it was because the patient was very sick so the anesthesiologist was very careful with the amount of drugs given, all he did was give more to solve the problem. The patient did not completely awaken and sit up on the table, he just started slightly moving. Some patients remember seeing the surgical lights after they wake up and they believe that they woke up during surgery............

El Centro students Spring '06
Oh and another thing.....Please know your own study skills and what works for you......Dont listen to what everyone else tells you. I always studied better alone and some people work better with groups. Always have a support group.....no matter what. Don't hesitate to ask your instructors for individual help, they understand better when they see that you are trying.......... smarty_RN

CONTINUED IN WHAT IS THE MAJOR REASON Why are they all leaving?
I think you may need to work on your organization skills. I am saying this not to offend you. Some people can prioritize better than others, maybe you can ask the hospital education if they have a class for organization and prioritizing. I used to work in med-surg/ telemetry so I had very sick med-surg patients and on top of that with heart issues. I always made sure that my patients were taken care of but I always took my break too. So I am not just telling you this because it sounds good, but from experience. I work in surgery now because I just happen to enjoy it better. Have you tried any other types of nursing? Med-surg is not the only thing out there......... Don't give up........Smarty_RN

Is it true that a BSN will be mandatory soon?
I am an RN with my Associates Degree, and I have been seriously thinking about going for my Bachelors RN. I can honestly say it has nothing to do with me being able to give my patients better care if I get my BSN, it would be to benefit me in the future for managing positions. No one who has posted on here has mentioned the most important people that would be affected here ( The Patients ) !!!!!!!! You know, the people who are the reason we nurses have jobs ! I think a bachelors degree would be awesome, but just not mandatory. Maybe if they offered more pay for it you would have more students going straight for the BSN instead of the ADRN. And I don't mean 50 cents to 1.00 dollar more either. Lets try maybe $10-15 dollars more an hour for having a BSN .....I would be 1st in line. .....But seriously.....priority is to the patients and they are more concerned about having someone who can safely take care of them ( passing boards is suppose to qualify a nurse for that ). For those who have BSN's or ADRN's congrats for all the hard work you have done to get where you are! Oh and one more thing......there was definately nothing fast-track about the ADRN program I graduated from, my program required a minimum grade of 78 for passing, and some BSN schools I know of has a 70-72 for passing.........God Bless SMARTY_RN

Hypochondriac Nurses
Oh my!!!!!!! I thought that I was the only crazzed nurse out there with these feelings lol..... Since I graduated I have started having anxiety attacks. Eveytime my shoulder aches I think it's an MI. My anxiety attacks have become fewer and fewer over the past yr. It is comforting to know that others have the same feelings. I work in surgery and my patients come in with all these horrible conditions and have to get surgery to cure it or just make it better than what it currently is, and I am always worried that I will need that surgery.......:uhoh21: Once I thought I was truly going to die with one of my anxiety attacks.....It's funny now that I look back at it......

Quitting 4 months into nursing?
Hello I just joined this community and I am happy to be here. I would love to give you a bit of encouragement. I myself just graduated in May 2005 and I started off doing a 6 mth internship in surgery and then I tried 6 mths of med-surg and telemetry. Finally I am back in the surgery and I am very happy. I started feeling the same way you did when I first graduated. Just try out a few areas and see what you feel more comfortable with. Thats the great thing about nursing, there are so many different jobs you can do. Everyone is not interested in the traditional med-surg type of nursing.........Don't give up please,,,,,,! You have some powerful knowledge....Good Luck and keep us updated........ SMARTY_RN
