thanks for the replies! i can see what the bsn will offer me and still plan on working towards that. i understand to manage nurses you have to experience being a nurse yourself. after this semester i will have six science courses i need to complete before i can apply to a nursing program. taking a max. of two science courses a semester it will take me at least 3 semesters to complete. if i decide to get an assoc. in business i need to complete six courses as well but can fit them into two semesters and at the same time knock out 2 science courses. so in a nut shell.... i want to know from others in nursing management if an assoc. in business would be beneficially and worth losing two semesters for, or if the experience you gain working as nurse is just as good and i should focus on my nursing prereqs to get this done asap? hope i've clarified:wink2:

i can't speak for everyone but i'm relieved to be entering a new year. i understand times are hard and are predicted to get harder, but as i reflect on this past year my desire to become a nurse couldn't be stronger. previously my goal was to become a crna. i like the autonomy of the profession and the salary is a great bonus, but after the past year i would like to pursue the field of public health. with the motto of this past year being change i have found a renewed sense of hope that we can make things better. there is much needed change in our government health programs and now is the time to explore new possibilities. while registering for spring 2009 courses i did an evaluation of my previous course work and realized many of my courses could be used in the associate of business degree plan. i feel like a business background would be helpful in the public health sector but don't know if it's worth adding an additional two months of coursework would an associate's degree in business help my chances of gaining a position in nursing management anymore than a bsn and a few years of experience?

That is exactly what I am looking for - paid training. I have found a few places that except no experience but I'm having a hard time coming up with a way to link my experience with health care. Working in the customer service and legal fields requires very good people skills. Clients trust me with alot of information, and I see them at their worst. I think my people skills will add me in establishing relationships with my patients.

Besides caring for my children and family members when they're sick I have no health care experience. That being said I am looking at positions for patient care/caregiver. I am not certified nor do I have the time to spare. I would need something that would not require certification or be willing to train me. On the other hand I have compassion for others. I want to make a difference in someones life. In my previous employment I have dealt with a diverse group of people; especially as a legal assistant. Many of our clients suffer from mental illness, some have chronic illnesses, and often they are not at the best place in their life. I am great a defusing stressful situations. I just can't find a way to link that to physically caring for people.

FYI - All of my prior experience is administrative. I have dealt with a diverse group of people. For the past 3 years I have worked as a legal assistant. In this position I have dealt with clients with mental illnesses, dibilitating illnesses, and some that simply lack common sense. No matter who I am dealing I have the ability to build repour(?) quickly. Although the attorney does the job, I am the one in constant contact with the client.

I am trying to make a career change from administrative work to health care and could use some suggestions on a eye catching objective. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to agree with MotivatedOne - 2 years pre-req's and 2 years BSN nursing program. My goal is also NP or CRNA so for me going the BSN route would be faster. I have been taking pre-req's for a year and a half (3/4 time) and still have quite a ways to go, but our CC usually has a waiting list and would take to the same amount of time either way. I will probably have to continue working part-time once accepted but will cross that road when I get there. GOOD LUCK!!

I have been plugging away at pre-requisites for a year and a half now and due to soaring gas prices have decided to make the move to Austin by August 1st. I am married with two wonderful daughters ages 3 and 8. I would love to get some info on good elementary schools/ daycare facilities in the area. We are looking primarily in the north side of town but any info would be great. Also if anyone knows of any health care jobs I would appreciate the leads. I am not certified nor do I have healthcare experience but would love to get into the field sooner than later. For the past 8 years I have worked as an administrative asst. One other thing - how does everyone coincide their schedule with their children's (dropping off and picking up from school)?

I am currently completing prerequisites at ACC while working as a legal assistant part-time. I have been thinking about becoming a CNA to gain some experience before applying to nursing programs but I have some concerns: 1. How much do CNA's make in Austin (LTC, hospitals, etc.)? 2. Are schedules student friendly? I would appreciate any advice. Thank you

I have heard of the same program referred by The Little Greek. I live in Kerrville and you can pick up information on it at the local texas workforce commission.

I find it easier to take handwritten notes during class and re-type them later. This also helps me remember the material.

I lived in San Antonio as a teenager and now live in Kerrville, which is about an hour away. I have to agree with labcat01 - the north side of town is one of the nicest parts of town with some of the best schools. If you don't mind a small commute I would also suggest Boerne (about 20-25 min drive), it is a small town community but growing fast. Also, look into Helotes. They have good schools and the drive into town is 10-15 min. tops! The surroundings are amazingly beautiful in the Hill Country.

Thanks for the input. I plan to continue studying and hope that next semester I can get a class that allows for a little more time during tests. I do great on homework but I do that at my own pace and that usually take me a while. The school also offers a course that includes computer software that follows that lecture. Has anyone had any experience with something like this? Also, I receive financial aid. Has anyone had problems in this area after dropping a course? I plan on talking with the fin. aid dept. next week (closed for spring break).

I know exactly how you feel. I have been in the same paralegal job for 3 years now and I've been continplating becoming a CNA to better my chances of getting into nursing school. I have children and fear that if I do it things might not work out and I will be left up the creek without a paddle. Hope things workout for you:)

I am thinking about dropping my college algebra course and taking it again next semester. I understand the information but I have been having trouble completing the test in the hour given. We have had two tests so far and I have gotten 50's on both (I have all 100's on my homework) because I have only made it through about 1/2 of the test by the time class is over. I have asked if I could take the test in a testing center but the instructor refuses because it would be unfair to the rest of the class. So...... I feel if I drop the course now I can save my gpa and try again next semester.What are your thoughts? Has anyone been through this situation? PLEASE HELP!!

I just started volunteering with our local hospice. I will be visiting hospice patients in their homes and in nursing homes. I hope this gives me the healthcare experience that I need. Unfortunely our hospital offers the same volunteering opportunities given above:(

I also had to take elementary algebra and found that I understood it much better this time around. Everything suggested above is great. I would say dress in layers; some teachers keep the classroom really cold. Good Luck!!!!

I am currently working part-time and have managed to get by on that and gov. grants. I know once I start a nursing program that will change since I don't plan on working and my husband doesn't necessarily qualify for the best paying jobs. I am pretty determined to get my BSN. I really want to get this out of the way and not have to return to school to move up the latter. Except for possibly a career as a CRNA if I still feel the same after a few years experience. As far as relocating, I would love to attend school on the east coast if anyone knows of other states that provide grants that would cover the cost of tuition.
