  1. I had a pt come in to the ER the other day c/o back pain. She couldn't fill her pain medication for another 2 weeks. She informed me that she was allergic to shots. I didn't laugh, I asked what kinds of shots she was allergic to. "Something in all the shots gives me a rash. That's why Dr. B gives me pills." Loved that one.
  2. I helped out in the regular nursery (when Peds is slow) which is connected to the NICU. A 4 year old was not allowed in the NICU to see his baby brother, so he was waiting outside with his grandfather. He was interested in everything that was going on, so I explained what the different wires did and that he was being fed by the tube in his hand, etc. He loved it and so did grandpa. I don't think anyone had bothered to try to explain anything to him. It was so cool :)
  3. I work at a rural hospital and immediately got a Peds position on graduating school. That's been cool and I've been cross trained to Nursery, but we're moving. The hospital I'm going to has 24 beds and I'd obviously be working med-surg. I feel really really really rusty on med-surg. Any good books to catch up/brush up on my skills/general knowledge? Thanks!
  4. ha! We put in whatever we think will work. Sometimes 22G works better because the cannula is less flexible. You're the nurse, you're the one to guage it. If 22 doesn't work, you could always try 24G. remember a dehydrated kid is always going to be harder to start than any other kid
  5. Our admitting department keys in the admitting diagnosis. Often they are misspelled, but when I went to put this pts orders into the computer, I just about fell off my chair. "Hairy orbital cellulitis" Anyone else with wierd ones?
